The Message of the Cross “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are

perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18. What I nd comforting is 1 Corinthians 1:18

the message of the cross to (me) “to us who are being saved it is

the power of God.” I don’t know about you, but I need help from

God. I can’t do anything in my own strength. 1 Corinthians

1:30- 31 goes on to say, “But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who

became for us wisdom from God -and righteousness and sancti-

cation and redemption- that, as it is written, He who glories, let

him glory in the LORD.” You see, God sent His son Jesus Christ

for us. When we are saved by faith through Jesus Christ, He lives

in us. Christ then imparts His wisdom and righteousness

through us. We then can only boast in the LORD! How awe-

some is that! Practically speaking it looks like this… There is

nothing we can do apart from Jesus Christ. We can’t be a great

wife, mother, friend, teacher, leader, or speaker. If we have any

one of those gifts, it is because the power of God is working

through us. We may think we are doing any one of those posi-

tions on our own, but we will soon learn…It is the MESSAGE OF

THE CROSS…Nothing more…Jesus paid it ALL!

Who I Am in Christ…

When I was a teenager I thought I

wanted to be the “Popular Girl”,

the one everyone looked to. The

one who had the “cute” hairstyle, wore the

“cute” jeans, seemed to have the “cutest”

smile!

When I was a young woman, married begin-

ning my new life, with a husband and babies. Iwanted what the other moms had; The “cute”

house, the “cute” car and the “cute” name-

brand kitchen appliances.

Then God got ahold of me. Sat me down and

explained something more. “What if they did-

n’t know ME like you do?” He asked me.

“What if Jesus doesn’t live in their heart?”

I thought about that… I am God’sChild...that’s who I am in Christ.. I decided to

learn to be CONTENT… and rejoice!

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right

to become children of God, to those who believe in His

name:” John 1:12

Women’s Ministry Book of the Month By Kelly Gardner

A Confident Heart by Renee Swope

Ever feel like your not good enough, or valuable enough? Are you always doubting your-

self and living life with insecurities instead of living life fully, trusting God completely?

Instead of spending time focusing on “self” as the world would have you to do, spend

time focusing on God and discover security living daily in Jesus Christ.

Why this book?

I don't know about you, but I know an honest evaluation of the time I spend on “me” is significantly

great! These thoughts, conversations and focused events are not “fun” to admit and rather a bit embar-

rassing, and when it is all said and done the focus on “self” does nothing to bring joy to my life or oth-

ers. I typically end up with a “feel-sorry-for-myself” or “pity-party” attitude. The book “ Confident

Heart” by Renee Swope points you to God’s Word right from the beginning. Her writing is so relatable!

This is a woman who has walked the road of life and struggled with doubt and fear. Renee shares how

only through trusting in God and His Word will we find the solution to conquer all real fears, doubts and

insecurities in our lives.

Join us on Wednesday mornings for Joyful Books Book Club. We meet at 9:30 in the 3rd and 4th

Confidence inJesus Christ

Our Rock

By Deanna Johnson

Jeremiah 17:7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,

and whose hope is the LORD.” Where does your condence stem from? Is your condence

upon yourself, your knowledge, your talents, your relations or

upon the Lord Jesus Christ?  Isaiah 26:3-4 “You will keep him in perfect peace,

whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

Trust in the L forever, for in YAH, the L, is everlast-

ing strength.”

How many times have you said to yourself, “Self, I am not

good enough, I can’t do it, it is too hard – I won’t even try be-cause I know I will fail.” Or, “Self, what does it matter if I con-

tribute? No one will even notice, I can’t make it any better, why bother?” And how about, “Self, no matter how many

times I learn to be condent I keep on stumbling and messing

it all up. When will this ever end? Things will never change; Iwill never get it right.” I am all too familiar with these ques-

tions. Insecurities are something I deal with regularly. But, I

know that my condence must not be upon myself for I willcome short every time, my condence must be upon my Lord,

Jesus. As I pray and seek wisdom regarding condence, the image

that comes to my mind is that of a tree whose roots go deepinto the soil. But above the soil the tree actually sits upon a

large boulder. I love this picture for it tells me so much about

myself and my need to rely upon God.

We all know what it feels like to be insecure, to doubt our-selves. We also know what it feels like to be scared of what

someone might think about us, and many of us fear how some-

one may take what we have said in the wrong way. We mightbe fearful of forgetting all that we have studied when we must

stand before the class and give an exposition.

We have all fallen short of our own expectations or the expec-tations of others throughout our whole lives, before we were

Christians and even after we have come to know the Lord Je-

sus. Trusting in our knowledge, talents and relationships out-side of Jesus is like trusting in the branches to hold up the tree.

However, the roots are what sustain the life of the tree. Life

has many hardships and can be like destructive storms, but

even a storm cannot pull up the deep roots that have been se-

cured around a boulder.

During the spring and summer months of life we bask in the

beautiful sunshine and drink the water that refreshes us. Ourroots grow deep and spread out. We touch other’s roots and

possibly intertwine to help build a support for when wintercomes. When the winter does come we are strong, though

branches may break o here and there, our roots keep us se-

cure and upright. Where the broken branches have fallenaway, new branches may emerge stronger and even more

beautiful. You can all imagine a tree in Reno during the winter time; just

barren branches, almost lifeless in appearance. Yet when

spring time comes this tree is full of leaves, vibrant and full of

life. Why? Because it’s roots were spread out and went deep

down. The healthiness of the roots is revealed during the

harshness of winter time, the tree has been sustained.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 “Blessed is the man who trusts in theLORD, and whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a

tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by

the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will

be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor

will cease from yielding fruit.”

My sweet sisters, Jeremiah tells us to learn from the tree

whose roots are spread over the rock as they go deep downinto the soil. You will be blessed. Like the tree, you are se-

cure, stable and unmovable. As you replace your condence in

yourself with faith in Jesus our Rock there will be no wind orstorm (trial in life) that can move you. Though you may sway,

you will not be uprooted. When the heat (Satan’s attacks andor sin) comes to wither, the roots (your foundation) will remain

nourished and continue to seek out refreshing water (reading

the Word, prayer, worship, obedience and fellowship in thebody). Not only are you secure and safe, because your con-

dence is upon the Lord, you will also produce fruit (be a bless-

ing for others).

Expressions of Love “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” Romans 12:10

(NLT)

Conquering Our Giants

By Mary Jane Robinette

We all have at least one giant in our life eager to controlus. Fear is the most dominant giant. This enormous mon-ster penetrates our core until we are chained inside ourown self. We feel there is no way of escape. It continuesto cultivate until new dreaded emotions appear.

Far back in my life as I can remember, near seventy

years, I came to know my first giant. No child should haveto be awakened in the middle of the night hearing theirfather’s verbal drunken abuse against their mother. Everyweekend this giant named fear sat on the edge of my bed waiting in the quiet darkness to overcome me. Thescreaming sounds of hurtful voices and sometimes thenoises of physical abuse would soon awaken me. It wasthen I would scream in terror of what was happeningdownstairs. My cries, “Please stop! Please stop! Mommy,I’m scared,” shadowed my bedroom. Fear consumed myshaking body. Soon the sounds would fade and I would find my mother sitting next to me on the edge of my bed trying to console me, her soothing voice telling me thateverything was okay. She would sit with me until my sobswere overtaken with sleep and all would be silent and forgotten until the next evening. I knew that nasty giantwould return, he always did. Sadly for me as I grew upand left home, my giant followed me. Over the years mygiant grew into many giants, doubt, worry, no confidence, shyness and more. I fought a daily battle with my tor-menting monsters. A shroud of unrelenting emotions be-came my enemies and I faced these intruders alone.

It was at a Women’s Retreat that I faced my giants and gave my enemies to Jesus. I sat there at the Afterglow that

Saturday evening believing that I was all prepared to askthe Lord to take control of my giants. When I attempted to stand up and walk to a member of the prayer team, Icould not budge. I was frozen in fear. I had not told any-one what I had planned on doing that evening. It wasthen I silently cried out to my God, “LORD God if youwant me to do this then you must give me a sign, I cannotstand up alone.” It was within seconds our God spokethrough Sandie with a message just for me. She softlyspoke into the microphone, “the Lord just placed it on my

heart that someone here

tonight is living their life infear and they must comeforward for prayer.” I vivid-ly remember that moment.I can still feel the tremblingin my hands as they re-leased the hold I had on thesides of my seat. I had just heard my Abba Father callingout to me to come to Him.  Acts 18:9-10 “Do not be afraid, butspeak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will at-tack you to hurt you, for I have many people in this city.” I slowlystood. I received prayer. I had conquered my giants.

When my burden of living my life in fear was handed overto Jesus, my life changed. A confident faith in my Lord  Jesus set me free. “Proverbs 26:27 “In the fear of the Lord there isstrong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life to turn one away from the snaresof death..” We must surrender ourselves each day to Jesusand place our trust in Him to give us victory over our gi-ants. Whatever your giants may be that are devouringyou, let your faith in Jesus empower you with the courageto triumph over them . “2Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us aspirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” God’sperfect love casts out all fear. Our troubled emotions do

not need to have power over us. Giants are the enemy. Aslong as we serve our Lord, no one can harm us. By doingGod’s will every day we are wrapped in His arms of pro-tection.

I would rather kneel at the foot of the throne of Jesus know-ing that He is shielding me, then fighting off giants. Fear, inse-curity, depression, introversion, doubt, giants of all sorts should not keep you from the knowledge that our trust and confidenceare in the LORD! Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be Strong and of good courage, donot fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” No giant is biggeror greater than God. Trust is confidence in God to help youconquer your giants.

First: Present yourself to God (Romans 12:1) for confirmation that He has planted you in this fellowship. If so, then discover your

gifts and God’s calling your life.

Second: Study to show yourself approved unto God (2 Timothy 2:15). As you grow in your relationship with God, let Him prepare

 you for effective service.

Third: Be doers of the Word (James 1:22). Commit yourself to the work of Jesus Christ in this fellowship. Get involved as a yielded

vessel to God’s guiding anywhere He directs.
