once the drivers have been setup complete the installation.

Now that Callidus has been installed, insert the DK3 key into the USB port and Windows will recognize a new hardware device and ask “do you want to install the driver for the devise?” Answer ‘yes’ and Windows should now find and install the DK3 driver.

If you did install the key before installing Callidus software, simply remove it, then reinsert it to force windows to confirm the new DK3 devise is working.

Installing the DK12 Key The DK12 parallel port key is not plug and play so just install the driver and Callidus will find the key when you start the program

select the DK12 driver during installation

Deskey drivers Although, the appropriate drivers for the key are included in the Callidus setup-program, they can be also obtained from www.des.co.uk

Callidus quick start guide Setting up the digitizer board • 7

Setting up the digitizer board

The digitizer board If you are not using Callidus with a digitizer board please skip this section

The digitizer is the method by which paper scale drawings are entered into Callidus

Unpack the board and plug it into the computer’s serial port.

No serial port?

If your computer has no serial port then you will need to install a “USB to serial port converter”. Several manufacturers produce these devices each with their own installation instructions. Once installed your machine should have an active serial port which can be used by Callidus

Callidus cannot use COM ports higher than 4 so make sure that the USB device configures the port as either 1,2,3,4

Configuring your digitizer to run with Callidus Information about configuring the digitizer board is contained within the on-line help.

Page 9: Callidus quickstart · Callidus quick start guide Callidus quickstart • 1 Callidus quickstart Introduction Thank you for choosing the Callidus planning system. We are sure that

look in the contents section for ‘Digitizer boards’, find your board and you should see the configuration installation for your device

Setting the COM port It is important to ensure that Callidus is looking for the board using the COM port that the board is plugged in to. To assist with this select the command File:Digitizer finder.

Callidus now listens on all available COM ports, click a button on the puck and the appropriate port should be selected.

Callidus quick start guide Configuring Callidus for your company • 9

Configuring Callidus for your company

Company and local settings Callidus is a general program for use by all flooring companies and so you have various options that help personalize the program for your company and your country.

From Callidus select the File:Settings dialog box

Heading for Printed output Enter your company details into this field and they will appear on all printed reports

Output units Choose if you require Callidus values in metric or imperial units.

If you select Square Yards you can force individual materials to use Square Feet. So in plans when tile and sheet product are mixed the results can be yards for the sheet and feet for the tile products.

Page 11: Callidus quickstart · Callidus quick start guide Callidus quickstart • 1 Callidus quickstart Introduction Thank you for choosing the Callidus planning system. We are sure that

area measurements linear measurement Metric square metres Metres

Square Yards square yards feet and inches

Square feet square feet feet and inches

Entering imperial and metric measurements Measurements entered as simple numbers e.g. ‘6’ or ‘3.1’ are assumed to be in meters.

Use the form 6’6” to enter an imperial measurement.

Snap to nearest inch When displaying imperial units you may not want too much accuracy. Turn this on from File:Settings and all linear measurements are rounded up to the nearest inch.

This only effects the display of numbers and not their underlying accuracy

3 decimal places From File: settings set the level of accuracy on the printed output

Waste as % of Although the total amount of waste is fixed, the actual % displayed depends on whether it is measured as a proportion of the net area or total gross area.

While in the UK the waste is normally expressed as a percentage of the net floor area, in the USA it’s a percentage of the gross quantity. So, even though the amount of carpet remains the same in both countries - in the USA the waste factor will be lower than in the UK!

Getting started with Callidus

Floor Coverings At this point Callidus should be installed, the digitizer working and the program configured for use by your company in your local units. So it’s time to start using Callidus for floor-covering calculations.

Callidus is a fully featured system for contract floor coverings. Using the system you can quickly determine values for net, gross and waste area along with a wide range of other data required for accurate planning.

All installations need planning to some degree. Whether it’s a 3-bedroom house or a complete hotel, Callidus will become a valuable tool enabling you to try different layouts without having to spend any time on the manual calculations.

High quality reports convey the planning information to both clients and fitters helping to gain more business and avoid expensive on-site errors.

An approach to efficient and safe planning Before you begin using Callidus for real installations consider some principals of planning floor coverings

To ensure an error free process from planning, through ordering and on to the final installation there are a few basic but essential points to be clear about. These are true whether you are using Callidus or working manually.

Don’t plan in isolation from your installers it is essential that you are both using the same methods for allocating the rolls/tiles into the floor space.

Good communication will help eliminate potentially costly problems later on.

Make sure the drawings are accurate Check site measurements against the source drawing to ensure they are accurate as even small differences can have a large effect on the a gross quantity, especially with larger pattern repeats. For example, consider planning in a 1’ repeat in a room that, on the drawing, is just under 12’ long – in this case very little material is need for matching. But if in reality it is just over 12’ long then an extra 1’ will be needed for each cut to achieve a match. If there is a large number of these cuts the difference in carpet can be quite significant and you may run out on site.

Make sure the material is installed the same way as planned/estimated. Planning a material in two different directions normally results in two different gross areas. If the material is not installed in the same direction as planned you will risk running out on site – check all pile directions and seam positions on the installation and Callidus plans. You may find very efficient ways of using material but the installers must follow the plans to achieve this level.

Page 13: Callidus quickstart · Callidus quick start guide Callidus quickstart • 1 Callidus quickstart Introduction Thank you for choosing the Callidus planning system. We are sure that

Make sure every area is included Sometimes, adding another very small room may require a disproportionately large piece of carpet. Also, when it comes to installation make sure the number of rooms has not changed in the interim period.

Make sure you include tolerances and pattern repeats Allow enough installation tolerance for trimming on site. If there is a pattern repeat, make sure you understand the different ways of pattern-matching. More important, make sure your installers work in the same way.

Can you use waste from tiles? If any waste from tiles is thrown away on site, don’t assume it can be used during the planning stages.

Check the quantities Check the amount ordered and delivered to site is at least the gross quantity calculated

Using Callidus Callidus is extremely easy to use once you understand the basic principals and the best way to learn these principals is to work through some simple exercises after which the principals can be applied to more complex installations.

IMPORTANT

Callidus knows nothing about what your customer wants, it doesn’t care which pile direction you run the carpet, tell it do something (or forget to tell it not to do something) and it will follow your instructions. The program is deliberately designed this way to give you great planning/estimating freedom but the key is to make sure you understand the materials you are using and approach the job just as you would if you were working manually. Be clear about layout and installation requirements and don’t assume that Callidus knows what you are trying to achieve.

Understanding the basics Callidus is structured around a floor-plan, materials and rooms as indicated below.

Training videos It is often much easier to learn by example so we have produced a set of on-line videos to help show how to the program is used.

From the Callidus toolbar press the ‘w’ icon to visit the video library webpage and watch the films.

These films are also referenced within the on-line help system

Additional training Although the on-line help and printed documentation are designed for self-training, your local agent can arrange personal training either on-site or via the web

For information about contacting your nearest Callidus agent please visit our website www.getCallidus.com

And finally… Callidus is a very powerful system capable of handling many complex tasks within the floor covering industry.

If you have any questions that cannot be answered from the documentation or training films please do feel free to send an email to your agent who will be happy to assist during your learning phase.

If you have any ideas for new features or ways in which the program could be improved please do let us know.

Ultimately, we hope you enjoy using Callidus and find it a helpful assistant with your floor planning requirements.

Good luck and have fun! Oakleaf Software
