PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Called By Name: An Invitation to Identify and Encourage

Discernment of Priestly Vocations

During the past three weeks all the parishes of the Diocese of Trenton have been partici-pating in “Called By Name” - - a pro-active program of voca-tions awareness and action that

began three weekends ago and concludes this weekend.

This program offers an opportunity for all of us to pray for vocations; to recognize gifts and potential for leader-ship and service in members of our parish; and finally, to call forth and encourage those members to share their gifts in and through the priesthood.

Perhaps you know a man (high school age or older) here in our parish who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to be a good priest. Now is the time to identify that man, pray for his potential vocation, and encourage him to come forward and explore the priesthood discern-ment process.

WRAP-UP WEEKEND: Today, please place your Called By Name response card in the collection basket or return it to the parish office. Please continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood. Remember in prayer those men of our parish who have been nominated, that they may appreciate their giftedness and respond to Christ’s call. Thank you. And may God bless you.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 17, 2019 Page 3

Pastor’s Note: Veterans Day was celebrated this past Monday – a day of prayer, remembrance, and gratitude honor-ing military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The celebration has its origin in the signing of the armistice that brought an end to World War I on November 11, 1918. At our Masses on Veterans Day, Fr. Dunlap at the 8:00 a.m and Fr. Nillo at the 7:00 p.m. led us in prayer for our country’s veterans (one might say those “called by name” to serve the nation and its citizens) and the congregation at both Masses joined in the patriotic singing of God Bless America. Re-printed below is Bishop O’Connell’s Veterans Day 2018 message.

On May 12, 1962, General Douglas MacArthur returned to West Point to receive an honor from that venerable institution and to ad-dress the corps of cadets there.

His memorable speech presented a vision of military service that bore witness to his own long experience and to the nobility of such service. “Duty, honor, country,” he reflected to the cadets and veter-ans gathered there, “those three hallowed words rev-erently dictate what you ought to be, what you can

be and what you will be. They are your rallying points...” It was not MacArthur’s intention to glorify war but, rather, to inspire those in uniform to seek peace. “The soldier above all others,” he observed, “prays for peace for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.”

Our nation has formally honored its military veterans since 1919. This year, as we commemorate those brave women and men in every generation who have served our country, heeding the call, when necessary, to place themselves in harms’ way for the cause of peace, let us offer our grateful prayers that their sacrifice and their ser-vice may never have been or ever will be in vain.

May true and lasting peace always be our goal, together, as one nation under God. And to our veterans on this, their day, “thank you for your service.”

SAVE THE DATES

Fr. James Wallace, C.Ss.R., former Rector of the

San Alfonso Retreat House and a good friend of

our parish, will be visiting St. Michael’s

All parishioners, families, and friends are invited to a

Family Mass of Thanksgiving at 9:30A.M.

on Thanksgiving Day.

The Parish Thanksgiving Day Choir will sing at this 9:30 Family Mass under the direction of our Parish Music Director Paul Bergin. At the conclusion of the Mass, loaves of bread will be blessed and distributed.

Please note: Mass on Thanksgiving Day will also be celebrated at 7:00 a.m. (the “early bird Thanksgiving Day Mass”) in addition to the 9:30 a.m. Family Mass. Mass will not be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Confessions will not be heard on Thanksgiving Day except for an urgent need; please contact the Parish Office if such a need occurs.

The Called By Name campaign comes to a close this weekend but the need for priests and prayers for more vocations continues. As noted on the bulletin cover, please give prayerful thought to whether you know a man in the parish whom you can envision as a future priest and please drop his name and contact information into the colletion basket or bring or mail your completed Called By Name response card to the parish office. We have received four recommended names so far (as of the November 13 bulletin deadline) from a parish of nearly 3,000 registered families. Deepest grati-tude is extended to Frs. Nillo, Stephenson, Anarcon, DiPalma, Enriquez, and Kelly for sharing with us from the pulpit/ambo last weekend their “vocation stories”….those homilies were informative, compelling, entertaining, and heart-felt. Please God that those homilies will move the hearts of our parishioners to submit the names of men whom they respect and admire as candidates for the priesthood…and move the hearts of those men to say “yes” when their phones ring.

The Baptism preparation classes for parents are con-ducted every third Thursday of the month. The next class

is December 19. Classes begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Church. Please call the Parish Office to register in advance.

Adult Choir: An Invitation to Join Us

Adult members of St. Michael’s Parish (ages17 and older) are warmly invited to join the Parish Adult Choir which will be singing at the liturgies listed below. Rehearsals will be held every Saturday from now until Christmas from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. in the Lower Church. Rehearsals will be held in the choir loft each third Satur-day. The Adult Choir is preparing to sing at the following Masses: ·7:00 p.m. Cohort 17 Quarterly Mass, Monday, Novem-ber 25 ·9:30 a.m. Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28 *The choir is open to anyone who is willing to commit to the weekly rehearsal schedule.

Collection Envelopes: They’ve Arrived! The new batch of collection envelopes has arrived in your mail boxes.…we believe! As noted in last Sunday’s bulletin, the parish office had received many phone calls and messages notifying us that Sunday Collection enve-lopes had not arrived in the mail at the homes of many of our parishioners. Again, thanks for letting us know. We apologize for the delay and any inconvenience. Our enve-lope printing company advised us that they experienced a severe mechanical problem with the equipment that they use to print our envelopes and the envelopes of many oth-er parishes. The printing job had to be transferred to an-other facility and another shipping site. The envelopes were shipped from Upstate New York on October 31.

On the good news side of the coin, a significant num-ber of phone calls came into the parish office during the latest week letting us know that the envelopes had been delivered. Praise the Lord! We hope that everyone has now received their new supply of envelopes. If a delivery has not yet arrived at your home, please let us know. As you will see on Page 6 of this bulletin, the total weekly collection amount was lower than usual last weekend.…maybe that is attributable to the envelope snafu. If your November 10 weekly contribution to the parish did not make it into the basket because of the delayed envelopes, we would be grateful if you would consider catching-up this weekend in the Nov. 17 envelope or next weekend in the Nov. 24 envelope. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Parish Office Closed for Thanksgiving

November 27, 28 & 29, 2019. The office will re-open on Monday,

December 2 at 8:30 a.m.

The parish’s trip to the Boston Pops Christmas Concert at NJPAC is al-ready sold-out. We thank all those who have signed-up for their swift and enthusiastic response. We’re keeping a stand-by list in the event of any cancellations.

Please feel free to call the parish office to put your name on that list if you are still interested in this event. We’re looking forward to remembering Arthur Fiedler’s music of many years ago (see photo) as we enjoy the Christmas music of today’s Pops Orchestra.

Simbang Gabi is a Catholic devotion practiced by Filipino Catholics to prepare for the birth of Jesus. Also known as Misa de Gallo (“Mass of the Rooster”), the tradition began in the 1600s in the Philippines where church bells would start ringing as early as 3:00 a.m. during the last nine days of Advent leading up to Christmas. The bells and the loud crowing of the roosters awakened the townspeople for 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m. Mass and allowed farmers and fishermen and their families to go to Mass before they worked in the fields or when they came back from the seas in the early hours of the morning. The Filipino Catholics brought the devotion with them wherever they went. In the Northeast, since the cold December weather would not allow them to celebrate at dawn, the celebration was held in the evening or at night. Thus, the devotion became known as Simbang Gabi, which literally means “Night Mass.” All are invited to the 9 consecutive nights of the Simbang Gabi. Each of the 9 Night Masses will be held in a differ-ent church within Monmouth County. All Masses will be celebrated in English. This year’s theme is “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).

Be thankful when you don’t know something for it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations

because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable les-sons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary because it means you’ve made a difference It’s easy to be thankful for

the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings. Just get through the day if you are alone.

Go for a walk, even if it is cold; just bundle up. Volunteer, your help will be appreciated. Go to the movies. Read a book. Watch an old movie.

Please keep in mind that the parish priests and our lay Extraor-dinary Ministers of the Eucharist are available and eager to bring Communion to parishioners who are in the hospital (nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehab cen-ters, and hospices, too) and to pa-rishioners who are at home but unable to get to church. Please contact Mary Valan at the parish office or Dotty O'Hara at (908)310-6497 to make ar-rangements. Hospitals and other healthcare facili-ties generally do not notify the parish office regarding their Catholic patients who desire to receive Commun-ion. And so it falls to the patient herself/himself or to a family member or friend to contact the parish office to make the request. The parish priests will also very gladly make a hospital visit or home visit to hear a Confession and/or administer the Sacrament of the Sick in addition to bringing Holy Communion. Please re-member to contact the parish office or Dotty to make these arrangements. Thank you.
