Author/Artist ProfileAlthough active throughout her long life, painter and illustrator Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825–1916) kept a low profile, as was the custom for aristocratic women of her era. Admirers of her work included Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and Boyle’s moody, dramatic style has a decidedly pre-Raphaelite air. In addition to her masterpiece, Beauty and the Beast, she illustrated the poetry of Tennyson and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen.

Author ProfileGeoffrey Chaucer (1343–1400) is widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages and The Canterbury Tales is his greatest work. At a time when French and Latin were the dominant languages of litera-ture, Chaucer played a crucial role in bringing Middle English vernacular to the fore.

Artist ProfilesAlthough best known in his lifetime as a poet and social activist, William Morris (1834–96) is chiefly remembered today for his designs, which he issued from his highly suc-cessful decorative arts firm. He also founded the Kelmscott Press, which he dedicated to the hand-printing of a select number of beautiful books at the highest standards.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833–98) was an original mem-ber of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and a close friend of William Morris’s from their days as Oxford undergradu-ates. In addition to his painting and stained glass work, Burne-Jones worked closely with Morris in the area of decorative arts and illustrations.

The Works of Geoffrey ChaucerThe William Morris Kelmscott Chaucer With Illustrations by Edward Burne-JonesGeoffrey Chaucer Illustrated by Edward Burne-JonesThe edition of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer published by the Kelmscott Press in 1896 combined the talents of William Morris, one of England's greatest typographers and printers, and those of artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones, who created the 87 full-page woodcut illus-trations. For students of Chaucer, English literature, English print-ing history, and 19th-century British art, the Kelmscott Chaucer is a unique treasure. Originally published in a limited edition of fewer than 500 copies — hardly any of which surface on the rare book market — this masterpiece is now available to a new generation of collectors and bibliophiles. 576pp. 9 x 12.

The basis for the recent new staging at the Metropolitan Opera House: masterful reprint of a rare 1903 edition

Author ProfileAuthor and scholar Joseph Bédier (1864–1938) was an expert on medieval French history. He established his repu-tation as a writer with the 1900 publication of Le roman de Tristan et Iseult and as a scholar with Les Légendes épiques, a four-volume study of the origins of French epic poetry.

Artist ProfileGerman illustrator Robert Engels (1866–1926) was educated at Düsseldorf’s Academy of Art and taught at the Munich Academy. He particularly excelled at the depiction of legends and sagas.

The Romance of Tristan and IseultRetold by J. Bédier Illustrated by Robert EngelsOlder than even the Arthurian myths, The Romance of Tristan and Iseult originated in the 12th century and inspired countless other tales of star-crossed lovers. Rooted in Celtic legend and French poetry, the tradition has been interpreted in the form of story, song, and artworks. This stunning hardcover edition features a subtle color treatment by German illustrator Robert Engels that brings the tale to life with effects similar to those of modern graphic novels. Recounted by French medievalist Joseph Bédier and expertly trans-lated by Hilaire Belloc, the story blends visual impact with literary quality. "Among works attractive by their rare artistic finish, beauty of illustration, and loftiness of purpose, this should undoubtedly take high rank."— British Books. 160pp. 8.5 x 11.
