About IM 2007 The Tenth IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Net- work Management (IM 2007) will be held 21–25 May 2007 in Mu- nich, Germany. IM 2007 will present the latest technical advances in the area of management, operations and control of networks, networking ser- vices, networked applications, and distributed systems. Held in odd-numbered years since 1989 and taking turns with its sibling conference NOMS, IM 2007 will build on the successes of its pre- decessors and serve as the primary forum for exchange among the research, standards, vendor and user communities in the field of integrated management. The symposium is sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Work- ing Group 6.6 on Management of Networks and Distributed Sys- tems, and by the IEEE Communications Society Technical Com- mittee on Network Operations and Management. IM 2007 will be organized into technical and application ses- sions, panels, and tutorials. In addition, it will feature an indus- trial experience track to share practical lessons learned by user and vendor communities, birds-of-a-feather sessions, and vendor exhibits. In the tradition of previous events, we strive to make the IM 2007 Symposium the highest quality professional event of the year. Paper submissions underwent a stringent review pro- cess implemented by the Technical Program Committee, which includes many of the most respected experts in the field. We re- ceived papers that break new grounds or present insightful results based on experience with integrated management of networks, systems, applications and services. Six workshops on specialized topics will be held on the days be- fore and after the IM technical program. Addresses of WelcomeI cordially welcome all of you to this symposium!

I am happy to see experts from all over the world gather-ing in Munich to consult with each other on their researchfindings and developments. I regard this as a compliment toMunich as a location of scientific endeavor: The Free Stateof Bavaria takes pride in having two of Germany’s most respected universi-ties located in its state capital – Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchenand Technische Universitat Munchen.

About ninety thousand young women and men at these two institutions ofhigher education devote themselves to their specialized subjects acrossthe entire spectrum of science: Students from Munich are at the top oftheir scientific disciplines with respect to both domestic and internationalratings. This provides eloquent confirmation of our policy in the area ofeducation, science and research.

In this matter we place emphasis on cooperation between science andbusiness. For that section of the sciences which is directly relevant forbusiness, it is important to establish contact between theory and prac-tice; by the same token, commercial enterprises for very good reasonsset value on employees with first-rate and practice-oriented education. This should not be taken to mean that “less-economic” sciences will bemarginalized on Bavarian university campuses, since our strength lies indiversity also at the institutions of higher education.

In this spirit I wish the symposium lots of luck and success.

— Dr. Edmund Stoiber, Bavarian Minister-President

The Universitat der Bundeswehr Munchen welcomes ourguests from all over the world who will take part in the 10thInternational IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated NetworkManagement.

Though our university has three big faculties in social andeconomic sciences, we see ourselves as a technical univer-sity. The main research effort at our university takes place infour faculties comprising computer science and engineeringdisciplines resulting in considerable third party funding.

Financed by the Ministry of Defense and academically supervised by theBavarian Ministry of Science, this university educates German officers upto their diploma, master or doctorate degrees. After 12 years of service, these men and women are able to integrate themselves easily into thecivil labor market. Their high success rate is due to the combination ofleadership ability and their profound academic education.

In research and teaching, we therefore highly encourage any combinationof engineering and computer science with methods of modern manage-ment. One result of our efforts is the university-wide research programin Security and Safety. That you have chosen the Universitat der Bun-deswehr Munchen as a venue for this conference makes us proud. It isonly the second time that this conference will take place outside the USA.

I wish all participants lively and successful discussions!

— Prof. Dr. Merith Niehuss, President of theUniversit at der Bundeswehr Munchen
