Overview

The Humanity in Action Fellowship programs will run simultaneously from May 31 - June 30, 2014.Programs are followed by the Humanity in A ction Inte rnational Conference, whic h will be held inIstanbul.

Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of emerging minority rights leaders to explore diversity issues, national histories of discrimination andresistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today.

Each program is highly interdisciplinary, and features daily lectures and discussions with renownedacademics, jour nalists, politicians and activ ists. There is also a significant number of site v isits togovernment agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums and memorials. The programsseek to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and highlight different models of action to remedy injustice. Since the p oint of departure in most Humanity in Ac tion programs is the Holocaust and relatedissues of resistance and remembr ance, Humanity in Actio n values the par ticipation of Bosnian Fellows who br ing an impo rtant per spe ct iv e given Bosnias re ce nt histo ry of v iolenc e, war and po st-warchallenges.

Fellows from B osnia and Herzego v ina ar e expe cted to participate in the BiH Senior Fellows Assoc iationonce the Humanity in Ac tion Fellowship programs endand to sustain their engagement in the issuesaddre ssed d uring th e fellowship.

The deadline for applications is February 16, 2014.

Eligibility

Bosnian-and-Herzegovinian university students and recent graduates are welcome to apply, especially those committed to the promotion of human and minority rights, tolerance and interculturalunderstanding. You are eligible to apply if:

Y ou are a Bosnian and Herzego v inian univ ersity student (in y our se co nd se meste r of stud iesat least) or a recent graduate (no earlier than 2012)

Y ou are profic ient in English and BHS

Y ou are knowledgeable about ongo ing so cia l, po litic al and transit ional tr ends in the c ountry (and issues related to European Union accession). You have interest in human and minority rights and the willingness to start or continue active civic participation by taking part inHumanity in Ac tion activ ities in Bosnia and Herzegov ina

Please note that short-term exchange students and doctoral students are not eligible to apply. Humanity in Action seeks applicants who are mature, proactive, self-reliant, experienced in grassroots activism andcomfortable in intensive group activity and interaction. All majors and academic disciplines areencouraged to apply.

Candidates who make it to the second round of the selection process will be informed about the date,time, and place for the interviews via email.

Please note that your application must be submitted in English. You should give yourself enough time toassemble all the required application materials before the deadline. Make sure to check the applicationinstructions and guidelines for further instruc tions. Based on the written application, sev eral candidates will be inv ited for a pe rso nal int erv iew. During the inte rv iew , candidate s will be ev aluated on the bas is o f their communication skills, personality traits, and evidence of leadership potential and academicaccomplishments preferably within Bosnian and Herzegovinian society.

Costs

Humanity in Action covers the costs of accommodation, transportation, meals and participation inprogram activities and provides a small amount of pocket money for the participants.

Obligations and Opportunities: After the Fellowship

Ac tion Proj ec ts As a re quirement o f par tic ipat ion, Fellows ar e obligate d to co nduc t a hands-on o utr eac h init iativeanAction Projectin their home communities. The initiative should reflect the Humanity in Action

fellowship ex perience. Upon succe ssful completion, Fellows are invited to become Senior Fellows and to join the global Humanity in Act ion co mmunity .

Professional Fellowship OpportunitiesEvery year, Humanity in Action places more than 50 Senior Fellows in professional fellowship programsand internships to provide practical experience working on human and minority rights. Over 230 SeniorFellows have completed Humanity in Action-sponsored internships since 1999. Current professionalfellowship oppo rtunities include the Lantos-HIA Congressional Fellowship in Washington, DC and the PatCox-HIA Fellowship in the European Parliament.

Bosnian-and-Herzegovinian Senior Fellows AssociationThe Bosnian and Herzegov inian Senior Fellows A ssociation was founded in 2008 and co ntinues to be agrowing and vibrant organization. Bosnian and Herzegov inian Senior Fellows organize numerous e ve ntsand seminars, collaborate with one another in the implementation of their Action Projects, and arecurrently looking forward to welcoming new members to their association. There are similar SeniorFellows Asso ciations in Denmark, France, Germany , The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Poland andthe United States. These A ssociations have developed o ver the y ears into a global network of more than130 0 Senior Fellows worldwide.
