The concept of “terroir” is an expression of how the soil, climate, grapes, the wine-

maker’s passion and the soul of a region come together to produce a unique and spe-

cial wine. Like wine-making, architecture is equal parts art and business, passion and

production. For both, the root of the effort lies in the site. Our approach is to provide

our clients with not only architectural expertise but a comprehensive set of contacts,

consultants and resources that can help them envision and bring to life every aspect

of their project,

SB Architects provides a complete range of services for anyone creating facilities in

the wine business. We have the capacity to help owners create their dream of a new

wine venture, as well as assist established ownerships expand their facilities. From the

smallest boutique winery to expansive wine-oriented resorts, we possess the depth of

experience to take any project from initial vision through to the first boling.

Perhaps our greatest strength is our ability to express a sense of individual passion

and brand through architecture, working hand-in-hand with our clients to establish

and maintain their vision and give each project the vitality that is as unique as the

‘terroir’ from which the wine is born.

THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD OF WINE is

developing rapidly – not only in established

wine-producing regions such as France, Spain and

Italy, but also in exciting new regions such as

China. Within the United States, wine regions on

California’s Central Coast, Oregon, Washington,

even upstate New York, are coming into their own.

There is a need in the marketplace for design

partners who are not just architects and builders,

but are partners in the entire process of wine-mak-

ing and understand every element of the art and

business of wine from the selection of the land to

creating the brand to marketing the end product...

a need for partners who go beyond creating build-

ings as stand-alone iconic structures to create

environments that express the life and passion

behind the wine and those who make it.

different accrediting organizations around the world.

OUR VALUE LIES IN OUR KNOWLEDGE, RELATIONSHIPS AND PROCESS

Key senior staff champion the sustainable design process.

Established relationships with some of the world’s leading consultants

allow us to eff ectively follow an integrated design process.

Our commitment to the site inspires us to prioritize research and deep

understanding as key elements of the design process.

Our emphasis on communication, fl exibility and innovation allow us to

function eff ectively within an integrated design team.

Our long-standing reputation for establishing and maintaining a strong

design vision allows us to champion an authentic, sustainable approach

to design and development.

As we work to create authentic, sustainable destinations around the globe,

we partner with a broad spectrum of consultants and certifying organizations

to ensure that we deliver projects that are both ecologically and socially

sustainable. Our experience working with organizations such as the USGBC

and Audubon International give us the tools to create unique projects that live

in harmony with their surroundings. Our process begins with a deep respect

for the site, the history of the land and the culture of its people. We are fully

aware that to create authentic destinations, we must preserve the elements

that have drawn us there in the fi rst place.

This unique resort and private residence club

is nestled on 23 wooded acres in the heart of

the California wine country. The remainder of

the 157-acre site has been left undeveloped.

The property contains both resort and fraction-

al ownership units, each designed to blur the

line between indoor and outdoor spaces, creat-

ing a “bungalow-in-the woods” experience in

which the spectacular natural surroundings are

the most important amenity. Living and bed-

room spaces surround private cabanas (out-

door living rooms) complete with outdoor fire-

places, lighting and comfortable furnishings.

The resort units range from 600 to 2,400

square feet of indoor/outdoor space, and the

fractional ownership units average 3,200

square feet of space. The architecture is a mix

of indigenous natural materials with steel and

glass elements, emphasizing the indoor/outdoor

lifestyle and casual elegance that typify the

Napa Valley.

Set on 135 acres in the Temecula foot-

hills, this resort is at the forefront of the

trend toward the development of experi-

ential, wine and food-centered destina-

tions. The resort – which will accommo-

date close to 200 guests - will be set

directly within the vineyards, surrounded

by numerous event spaces, a farm-to-

table restaurant, a stand-alone brewery

and a winery capable of producing

60,000 cases per year. The architecture

embodies a truly “American” design aes-

thetic - a sophisticated interpretation of

agrarian structures and classic

California Craftsman style. Dry-stacked

stone walls and a color palette that

reflects the surrounding desert environ-

ment firmly root the resort in the fertile,

yet rocky terrain of the Temecula Wine

Country.

Conceived as the first winery development in

the Liaoning Province, this collaboration

between SB Architects and EDSA will include a

full-production winery, a boutique hotel, a com-

mercial village, and residential villas. The con-

temporary design of the welcome center sets a

sophisticated tone for the winery and resort.

Every element of the resort will have its own

scale and character, but each will reference the

agrarian history of the area in a contemporary

manner. The hotel, for example, will capture the

style of California’s Napa Valley with earthy

materials and an abundance of indoor-outdoor

spaces. The buildings are arranged to allow

transparency to the surrounding vineyards and

to create a sense of discovery. Commercial

functions are clustered in a linear valley sur-

rounded by vineclad hillsides. Residential villas

are carefully set into on the surrounding slopes,

overlooking the vineyards.

This destination winery and production

facility will take a sustainable approach to

creating an enticing venue for wine tasting

north of the famed Napa Valley. Simple

contemporary forms will create a juxtaposi-

will center around an existing lake.

Structures tucked into a hillside conceal the

majority of their bulk but will be completely

open on the front side to views of the vine-

the site. Boardwalks and floating gardens

will bring the lake into the winery experi-

Wine production activities will be shielded

from visitors but viewing locations have

been created to educate the guests on the

winemaking process.

SB Architects is currently the project

architect for an extensive renovation of

the iconic Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn &

Spa. The renovation included the lobby,

lobby bar, Michelin Star-rated “Sante” res-

taurant, meeting facilities and Heritage

Suites. On the exterior, there will be

sweeping changes to the arrival, land-

scape, signage and pedestrian circulation.

The firm is also working with the Sonoma

County Landmarks Commission on a pro-

posed exterior addition that will enhance

the arrival experience and the lobby. The

renovation is designed to better align the

historic resort with the Fairmont brand’s

position and standards. The overall

design will respect the hotel’s character

while appealing to a younger demograph-

ic consistent with other luxury properties

in the area.

primary goal for this idyllic hotel, set in

the heart of the Sonoma Valley wine

region, was to provide more accommoda-

tions, new spa and fitness amenities and

an enhanced hotel experience, while

keeping intact the intimate, personal,

award-winning experience this property

is known for. Two new buildings housing

nine new guest suites echo elements of

the historic farmhouse. The spa struc-

ture, while new construction, appears to

be a repurposed horse stable that might

have been a component of the original

farm enclave.

The Farmhouse Inn, voted one of the

World’s Best Hotels by Travel & Leisure,

has been carefully expanded to include

more accommodations, a new spa, and an

enhanced hotel experience, while keeping

intact the intimate, personal, award-win-

ning experience this property is known for.

The new spa hugs the edge of a steep val-

ley wall and, in homeage to the design of

iconic horse barns, the building is long and

low. A screened entry and lounging area

creates an expansive indoor/outdoor

space, and Dutch doors lead to the three

treatment rooms (one a couple’s suite).

Each treatment room opens to a private

garden with an outdoor shower. Carried

out entirely in a milky-white palette, with

modern rustic furnishings, the spa is a

soothing retreat.

On a tree-studded hillside overlooking

the Napa Valley town of Calistoga, this

eco-sensitive boutique resort is designed

to provide an indulgent wine country

retreat, as well as a venue for intimate

events. The resort core contains a three-

meal restaurant, a spa with 10 single and

couples’ treatment suites, a fitness center

with a pool area, and a conference and

event facility. The residence club

“neighborhood” has its own recreational

facility. The low-rise structures are sited

along meandering roads and paths, and

are oriented to take advantage of views

through the trees to the valley below.

Page 26: Calistoga Ranch.indd

This project is set on a family-owned

vineyard property in the Sonoma County

wine country. The vision for the project

is to create a boutique hotel, spa, res-

taurant and 10 residences on the prop-

erty, leaving the remaining land as oper-

ating vineyards, which will surround and

weave amongst the elements of the new

resort. Both the owners of the Crinella

Vineyards property and the developers

of the new destination resort have a

long history in this part of the Sonoma

Valley. Therefore, it is critical that the

new property be developed in a way

that is sensitive to the heritage, culture

and agricultural roots of this part of the

California wine country. SB Architects is

assisting the client group with not only

project design, but site planning, resort

programming and overall vision.

Located in the heart of an historic town

in the Sonoma County wine region of

Northern California, this mixed-use devel-

opment is conceived as an eclectic cluster

of full-time dwelling units, hospitality and

event accommodations, retail spaces and

commercial enterprises. Situated just one

block from the town square, a hub of tour-

ist activity, this development is designed

to extend the pedestrian-friendly down-

town area. In addition to traditional

street-front retail with residential on the

upper floors, a cluster of live-work and

light-industrial spaces, surrounding a

courtyard, is designed to attract artists

and industrial designers to this creative

community. The site is also adjacent to a

proposed station of the future SMART rail

system, that will ultimately connect

Sonoma County with San Francisco and

the rest of the Bay Area.

Located on a prime site just a block and a

half south of Healdburg’s historic central

plaza, this unique project will expand the

city’s downtown - redeveloping an

underutilized site, and refurbishing a

significant stretch of important creekfront

land. The plan brings together a boutique

hotel, spa, restaurant and a residence club,

clustered around a central garden and

open to views of the creek. The architecture

references the traditional barn architecture

prevalent throughout Northern California,

while maintaining a modernist approach to

the finished structures. The warm, natural

palette of materials, rich diversity in the

massing and placement of building

elements, and varied roof-lines work

together to make this project an

approachable, pedestrian-friendly addition

to downtown Healdsburg.

Located at the southern gateway to the

Napa Valley, Stanly Ranch is an historic

piece of the California wine country. The

mission of this unique resort development

is to honor the site, its agrarian roots and

the area’s unique topography. Located

on a plateau at the center of the site, the

main hotel sits on axis with the mostly

subterranean spa built into the site’s high-

est point. Hotel cottages clustered in

groups of one, two and three units, as

well as fractional and whole-ownership

villas, are characterized by their intimate

connection to the land and by a sense of

luxury that stems from serene simplicity

and complete privacy. The resort is being

designed with the goal of LEED Silver

certification.

Kato Drys is a small ancient village in a moun-

been producing wines since biblical times.

Situated on a hill overlooking the village, this

small boutique resort will house a full-produc-

tion winery as well as a 55-room hotel with cot-

tages. Reminiscent of the ancient stone struc-

tures found in this region, building components

will be situated to create a series of plazas,

each with it’s own character and function

including a spa court and wine-tasting terrace.

The resort will also be a venue for weddings

and other events with a church, ballroom, spe-

cial events hall, event lawn, exhibition hall, and

other indoor and outdoor event facilities. A

cultural village will feature Cypriot cuisine,

hand-craft specialties, and demonstrations by

local artisans.

4,480 SF Vision Home

Located between the charming towns of

Geyserville and Healdsburg in the

Sonoma County Wine Region of

California, this parcel of land, character-

ized by rolling hills dotted with old-growth

vineyards, has been divided into 10 excep-

tional homesites. SB Architects, along

with a team of development visionaries,

has created each homesite to have a

unique set of characteristics. A prototype

vision home, designed for one of the par-

cels, epitomizes the modern wine-country

lifestyle this development is designed to

provide. Low-slung and contemporary,

this 4,480 SF home offers 6 bedrooms

plus a guest cottage and outbuildings.

Designed with wellness and sustainability

in mind, the home also provides barrel

storage, a wine library and cellar, a home

theater, and a green-roof pool house.

Set into an oak-crowned knoll within a

50-acre operating vineyard, this dramatic

home offers a serene retreat for husband-

and-wife artists in the vast California wine

country. The exterior forms are an abstrac-

tion of the California-Mexican hacienda tra-

dition. In an unconventional use of the

expansive site, the house was designed to

focus inward, creating a tranquil environ-

ment. Windows were strategically placed

throughout the house to create picturesque

vignettes, with the only expanse of glass

reserved for the panoramic view toward the

Russian River below. The hillside location

offered the opportunity to create separate

floors for studio and living/entertaining

functions. The two-level scheme generated

a maximum site coverage and integrates

the major existing oak trees into the design

through a series of courtyards.

Page 34: Calistoga Ranch.indd

This wellness retreat located within a

private estate on the San Francisco pen-

insula sits on its own one-acre site, but is

part of a larger master plan, serving as

an amenity to the main residence.

Within the constraints of constructing

two accessory structures on their own

piece of land, two simple building forms

have emerged that are connected to the

main residence and gardening conserva-

tory on either side. Isolated in its own

secluded environment, the buildings are

positioned in a way that welcomes the

visitor through an intimate spa court and

reorient the user to an expansive, gra-

cious garden experience beyond.

Traditional building materials of stone,

wood, and metal blend with the natural

environment but are applied with a con-

temporary aesthetic.

Christophe Harbour

Residence

S T . K I T T S

This expansive villa in the exclusive com-

munity of Christophe Harbour is nestled

into a hillside and has been designed as a

compound of pavilions oriented to take

advantage of spectacular views toward

both Sandy Bank Bay and Christophe

Harbour. The architectural style, although

based in traditional British Colonial and

Caribbean vernacular with large over-

hangs on wooden brackets, exposed raf-

ters and tongue in groove ceilings, takes a

slightly more contemporary approach with

simple clean lines and modern details.

Local natural stone was used extensively

for architectural elements and for piers

that allow the pavilions to float over a cis-

tern which collects rainwater for irrigation.

Nestled in the hills of Mill Valley just across the

Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, this cus-

tom home is the first LEED-H Platinum Certified

home in Marin County, and one of the first in the

state of California. This home is a statement of

what is possible in “high design and high sustain-

ability.” This project represents the collaborative

effort of a visionary group of partner companies,

who have come together to bring this first-of-its-

kind project to Marin County. The architectural

vocabulary is a careful balance between modern

sensibilities and the rustic, natural surroundings –

a modern cabin. Set deep into the hillside, nearly

20% of the home’s total square footage sits

below grade, taking maximum advantage of the

hill’s natural insulation. A central circulation core

connects four levels of living spaces, each of

which embraces the outdoors through expansive

windows and decks. Every window in the home

opens to a view of the trees, and many to a view

of the San Francisco skyline.
