Spacecraft and Instruments
A-Train Constellation
Spacecraft: CALIPSO and CloudSat Earth Observing SatellitesLaunch Vehicle: Boeing Delta II Rocket Launch Location: Vandenberg Air Force Base, California Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 2 Launch Date: April 28, 2006
Objectives:
a. to provide global measurements of aerosols and clouds required to obtain a better understanding of the aerosols and clouds role in the climate system,
b. to improve our abilities to predict long-term climate change and seasonal-to-inter annual climate variability.
The CALIPSO spacecraft uses an innovative lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) and imaging system to reveal the secrets of clouds and aerosols.
