Istanbul will obtain a brand new fair in April. All Arts Istanbul Fair will offer a wide range of artwork, from traditional arts to antiques, modern to contemporary arts between 18-21 April 2013. The Unobstructed Orchestra, under the baton of Selim ve Kerim Altnok, is getting prepared to give a pleasant concert at mraniye Atakent Cultural Center. In the concert that has been organized by Istanbul Municipality a wide repertoir of musical selection will be introduced, ranging from Turkish to Western music, Balcanian melodies to nostalgic songs, folcloric songs to national songs. The Unobstructed Orchestra will meet its fans on 13 April, Saturday at 20.00.

The secret of the brig htness in Spanish painter Pablo Picassos paintings have been discovered. Investigations have shown that the famous painter had chosen a bright homemade paint called

Ripolin instead of conventional paints. Physicians in Argonne National Laboratory in the state of Illinois in the U.S.A. borrowed The Red Armchair painting that Picasso had completed in 1931 for analysis from the Institute of Arts in Chicago. Researchers, who used the nanophrobe optical device that can monitor in a microscale, went deep into the level of pigmented particles, and studied the order of chemical elements in the painting. The results of the analysis have demonstrated the fact that the bright paint that Picasso had used indicated 100% consistency with the home paint brand Ripolin, whose manufacturing had started in 1897.

The researches in search for an alternative energy source carried out in Japan that deactivated 52 of their 54 nuclear reactors following the Fukushima disaster in 2011, have eventuated favorably. Japan, that has spent a big budget on these studies for 17 years, has succeeded in obtaining natural gas from flammable ice. Authorities from a government foundation, petroleum and natural gas company JOGMEC, have declared that the residue of methane hydrate gas has been obtained after a successful drilling 300 meters below the sea bed by a scout vessel. It is known that methane hydrate gas contains an ice like solid matter that has natural gas molecules, which is very difficult to extract.

A miniature infrared screening camera module utilizing low cost non-frigorific infrared screening sensors has been developed at the ODTU Micro Electro M echanical Systems (MEMS) Research and Implementation Centre. The widest area of utilization for the infrared cameras that have been brought into service excluding the defense industry is expected to be automobiles and cell phones. The camera will automatically stop the vehicles detected to prevent hitting pedestrians and provide night vision for cell phones. ODTU-MEMS Centre Chairman Prof. Dr. Tayfun Akn has maintained that they have implemented a different technique in connection with micro electromagnetic systems (MEMS) and CMOS integrated circuit technology in order to keep down the costs of the manufacture detectors and to produce smaller cameras.

American scientists succeeded in developing chips that can set themselves aright within milliseconds in case smart phones or computers break down. The system developed by research specialists at the High Speed Integrated Circuits Laboratory in California Institute of Technology (Caltech), can solve probable problems in four different categories. These problems consist of static differences due to variations in the component parts in the system, problems that arise progressively due to differences that take place inside the system because of continuous operation and wear, problems due to short term differences in relation to charging, heat and alternations in the voltage amount, and finally, problems that arise due to destructive damages that happen accidentally or deliberately in the circuit parts.

Holding hosted the Advertising and Marketing Summit organized by the Business Club at the School of Business Administration at Istanbul University, the one and only student club with an ISO Quality Certificate.

The Big Three Comes TogetherThe opening speech was made by Gaye Somuncu, Corporate Communications Manager at alk Holding, and Sinan Kksal, Head of Brand and Marketing at Turkuvaz Media Group, an affiliate to alk Holding. Mr. Kksal stated that as a pioneer company in visual and written media, the Group incorporates brands that lead the industry. Sports marketing was the center of attraction at the summit. FASTIP Programndan yeni mezunlar 25 new graduates of FASTIP Banking Program carried out by

Aleksander Moisiu University in Albanias Durres city in collaboration with Banka Kombetare Tregtare (BKT) have been offered job opportunities at BKT. As part of FASTIP Banking Program, students are obtaining practical knowledge in business life as a supplement

to the theoretical knowledge received at the university. 15 students who graduated in 2011 started working at BKT along with 70 students who benefitted from this program. BKT, which provides scholarship opportunities for 61 students in sum, has preferred to choose 17% of its recruitments from FASTIP students within the last two years.

Radio Turkuvaz, a subsidiary of Turkuvaz Media Group has started a book campaign called Hands Uniting for nine primary schools in various regions in Turkey, its outset being the idea that one can only clap with two hands. Could you talk about yourself as the General Manager of Lidya Madencilik within the body of alk Holding?I completed my bachelors degree in Dokuz Eyll University Public Administration Department and l was employed in banking sector. After working as an inspector in two different banks, I went to Belgium for my MBA studies and worked there for a short period. On my return to Turkey I wanted to work in a sector other than finance and in this period I met with alk Holding and started working in Gap Gneydou, Holdings affiliate in the textile sector.

After Business Development Directorship that you had undertaken at alk Holding, you have been appointed General Manager at the mining company, the newest sector at alk Holding. Could you tell us about this process, which could set an example to all employees?At first I started working in Gap Gneydou as Strategic Planning Chief in 2004. Afterwards, I was transferred to marketing department, and I worked in German, American and Swedish markets. Due to Companys operations, I went to Russia for five months and I joined a team there to establish a new brand. Right after the operation in Russia was closed I transferred to the Holding in 2005 and started working at the Risk Department. In that period, Group was working on major projects such as the tenders of Trk Telekom, TPRA, PETKM, ATV-Sabah, the projects of electricity plants, the Eurobond operation, the purchase/ sale of Bursagaz-Kayserigaz, the projects of the pipeline and refineries. I worked with good teams and leaders in most of these significant projects. In this period I became knowledgeable and experienced in all the sectors the Group was operating in and worked with many valuable colleagues. At that time a team was being established under the leadership of our Holding CEO Mr. Albayrak for the bond process and I took part in this team. The Groups first bond labour started in November 2006 and 200 million dollars of Eurobond was exported. During this process we met the enthusiasm of investment corporations and achieved great success by receiving a demand of 5 times of the offered number which is approximately 1 billion dollars. Following these operations I got appointed as Project and Investment Assessment Department Manager.

I got a promotion in 2008 and served as Business Development Director. Lastly, when the projects in mining sector became active, Mr. alk and Mr. Albayrak supported me despite my young age and I was appointed as General Manager to Lidya Madencilik in 2010.I would like to emphasize an important issue here. The fact that Mr. Ahmet alk, who himself had been involved with substantial enterprizes at a young age, has trusted and supported our young friends in the Group and encouraged them to take part in important decisions has provided us, younger employees, the opportunity to move forward in the Group. alk Group is a community known for and is proud of their dynamism, entrepreneurship, diligence and modesty. How did the idea of entering the mining sector flourish and what were the developments undergone in this process?The Group had been interested in the mining sector since 2004. Some teams were sent to conduct studies to specific countries under Mr. alks insightful supervision. alk Madencilik, which was founded in 2006, became active with the partnership in 2009. Thus we became associates with pler Gold Mine, the second largest gold mine in Turkey and other fields of Alacer Gold. We made the first overseas investment of alk Group in mining in 2012 and became partners with Zinco do Brasil, a company open to the public in the USA. This company has a zinc mine in the North of Brazil and excavation sites in the same region.

What kind of contributions does the trademark alk provide your company in your present and potential investments in the field of Mining?alk Holding is a highly esteemed corporation for its entrepreneurship, reliability, achievements, and courageousness both within Turkey and abroad. We benefit from this strength as we position our trademark as Lidya Madencilik. Obviously the name alk Holding provides us great support in our businesses deals and contacts. How is your association with Alacer Gold proceeding? Could you tell us about your mutual studies and new projects?Our partnership with Alacer Gold which proceeds successfully and productively is getting stronger as new projects are being implemented. As Lidya Madencilik, we aim to establish a model based on our values and realities benefiting from the knowledge and experiences of Canadian, American and Australian geologists and miners. We established 3 new companies with Alacer Gold in 50-50 partnership. Kartaltepe Madencilik, which is one of them, encompasses gold and copper fields that are nearby the pler Mine. Our second company, Tunpnar Madencilik, has a license that includes copper lands located in Tunceli. We plan to begin drilling here in 2013. sense, we have established a good team of 25 people in 2012. We have entrusted the operation of our company that has been in operation in Ankara to Firuz Bey, who is the leader of the team that has founded pler Mining. There are 12 gold, copper and molybdenum projects under this company. We made our first excavation operations in our Gmhane fields, and our first drilling has begun in Ordu. Our purpose here is to explore and expand the areas especially for gold in our three fields where we plan to start drilling in 2013.

How is your pler Expansion Project proceeding?pler Gold Mine has a reserve of 5-6 billion ounces; this figure could rise to 10 billion ounces in the following years. Current production is carried out in the region characterized as oxidized. The capacity of this production is approximately 200 thousand ounces annually. Investment costs for this production amounts to 250 million dollars and the method used is heap leach. We are planning to increase production fractionally by 300-400 thousand ounce levels with our partner. A new investment is required for the section known to be sulphurous ,since different process is going to be used there. The feasibility studies of this investment is about to be finished..

Has there been an increase in production in 2012 compared to 2011?pler carried out its first production in December 2010. Gold production was 185 thousand ounces in 2011 and 189 thousand ounces in 2012. We are expecting gold production to reach 200 thousand ounces (6.5 tonnes) in 2013. Bearing in mind that gold production amounts to 30 tonnes in the whole of Turkey, it is possible to claim that 20% of this production is obtained from pler Gold Mine.

What are your expectations for 2013 as a company?Firstly, we plan to end the evolvement feasibility studies in pler Gold Mine, arrive at a decision in this matter, complete the construction in the following two years and carry out a production of minimum 300 tonnes as from 2015. Our drilling still continues in Kartaltepe Madencilik; we are expecting source-reserve studies and the economic studies of the mine to have been carried out in 2013. Our target at Tunpnar Madencilik is to give start to the drilling work in 2013. As for our target at Polimetal Madencilik, it is to proceed

by reconnoitering in at least one at the drillings we have already started.As Lidya Madencilik, on the one hand we are carrying on with our operations as we expand in these areas, on the other, we are continuing with our operations in business development in the field of mining in Turkey and countries in the region. In this respect, we are looking forward to new developments in 2013.

As a company, what precautions do you take as you process gold for the preservation of the environment?Mining is a sector that goes hand in hand with the environment. It is not possible to do mining elsewhere; you have to carry out the work in that particular town, or that village. The issue of environmental protection is attached great importance to the investments made and mines worked out in the last 10 years. In this respect, especially companies operating in the gold sector have built establishments that can set examples. It is important to touch upon this subject as we have come to hear the word gold and cyanide in juxtaposition in Turkey. Cyanide is not used in the search for gold but in order to maintain the metal in gold production in very little amounts. However, sizable financial investments are made in order to prevent cyanide leakage in nature. Impermeable chemicals and clay are applied on the ground to obtain impervious layers that prevent the leaking of the water diluted cyanide in the soil to a great extent. All of these are audited by international, national and state offices in certain periods.

Turkey is quite a rich country in terms of its underground sources. Are there any new areas you would like to make investments in as Lidya Madencilik?Turkey has quite potential in mining. It is hard to say that it is one of the richest countries in the world, though. The reason for this is the fact that there are countries that have been involved in mining for years, and these countries are more advantageous in terms of surface area and their geological structure. Turkey is just beginning to take a place in the mining sector.As regards to gold, its production was non-existent in Turkey up until 2000. The first production had begun in 2001. While Turkeys gold production in 2012 was 30 ton, the export figure was around 140 ton in the same year. As can be seen from these figures, we still do not produce as much gold as we consume. Yet, we do have the potential. Turkey possesses 700 ton of reserves for certain and 6 thousand 500 ton probable sources. There are various reasons for our lagging behind in mining so far. The fact that commodity prices have remained low for years, it prevented the exploration of resources to be feasible and obstructed search work here until a certain period. It is impossible to get financial support from banks especially for your expenses during the search period because the risk is high.Since gold and commodity prices have generally risen considerably after 2000, improvements in the investment period, privatizations that took place in the 2000s, the allocation of more sources due to capital accumulation in Turkey for this risky area have activated the sector. The partnership alk Holding had realized with Anatolia Minerals in 2009 has the singularity of being the first big partnership in the mining sector that was founded by foreign and national companies in Turkey. This successful example has changed foreign perception towards Turkey, causing them to take a more serious interest. As regard to copper, its production in Turkey is low compared to the rate of its consumption. Turkey consumes around 500 thousand ton of copper yearly and not even 20% of this amount is produced at home, which means ending up with a high import invoice. Turkey continues to export in different areas such as zinc and lead, beside copper. Infact there is a hefty metal export invoice in Turkey that is not worded much. Turkey has to increase its metal production as the continuity of economical growth is dependent on this. Increasing the production and improving the fields certainly take time as mining is a risky sector However, it is also a sector that can be highly profitable.Countries make mining investments to different countries in order to ascertain their growth and cover their expenses. China and India can be shown as examples to these countries. Today, companies that are supported by the Chinese government are in a hurry to get mine fields at a bargain price in return for their infrastructure projects in almost all of the African countries. Turkish companies need to awaken to this and make mining investments in different parts of the world, mainly Africa and Middle Asia.On the other hand, mining is a sector in which the multiplier effect is high; it has a wide economical effect stretch; it can create economical and social transformation where it takes place. I think the best example for this would be the transformation undergone in the li town and pler village of Erzincan where our mines are located. Unlike the general tendency in the area there has been a transformation in which the population rose by 20%, unskilled labor has been turned to skilled labour, a considerable rise in the number of contractors has been observed, women have become integrated in the social and economical life and people are generally happier and more hopeful about the future.

Situated about a hundred kilometers to the South West of Baghdad, Karbala has a prominent place in the history of Islam, being the location where Hussain (r.a.) and his family were martyred by an army appointed by Yezid. This city that still

holds the same name today, within the borders of Iraq has a population of four hundred and seventy thousand people. It is possible to end up in Najaf after an hours drive towards south from the city whose west is surrounded by Lake Razazah. Semi-circular date palms stand out in the east of Karbala. Apart from religious visits paid by Muslim communities, date trade comes next in terms of economic contribution in the region. Vast desert land covers the western part of the city. Karbala, which has become a religous visit place after the demise of Hussain (r.a.), was previously known as a staging area with drinkable water and unsuitable for military defense. Despite the existence of stories regarding the fact that the River Frat had run near Karbala, there have been no findings confirming the validity of this rumour. Karbala, which is also a stop on the way to Najaf and Mecca for pilgrims, is also an important commercial center on the border of the desert It is also connected with Basra railway.

The New and Old KarbalaKarbala consists of two parts, the old and the new Karbala. The old town is separated with a wall from the new part located in the South. While old Karbala used to be a religious center, new Karbala strikes one with the predominance of its governmental buildings. Another important detail about Karbala is the fact that New Karbala looks more like a center of population that consists of modern neighborhoods. One instantly notices the fact that Karbala is a real desert city because the landscape is very flat and mountainous areas are almost non-existent. Today, it is known that the forest land to the North of the graves of Hussain (r.a.) and Abbas (r.a.), has been specifically founded beside the Hussain (r.a.) river after the 19th century. In the city, where the desert climate prevails, rain usually comes in November and April after the summer season that is generally extremely hot and dry.

The Mosques and sepulchersKarbala, which has prospered considerably due to religious visits, and has become the second most wealthy city of Iraq after Baghdat, has more than a hundred mosques, twenty-three religious schools (the most famous being Ibn Fahid that was constructed 440 years ago). The most frequented spots, Hussain (r.a.)s mosque and sepulcher, are situated right in the center of the old town. The most prominent feature of the mosques and sepulchers in Karbala is the fact that they have been decorated with precious metals such as gold and silver. Hussain

(r.a.)s sepulcher is similar in this respect. The minarets and dome of the sepulcher are covered with a big dome that is enameled with pure gold and covered with tiles. The walls surrounding the forecourt of Hussain (r.a.)s grave are covered with the Kuran- Kerim surahs all over. Lying alongside with their father, Ali Asgar and Ali Ekbers graves are also inside the hexagonal sepulcher. Employment for more than 2000 people The Al Khairat Project constructed with 481.75 billion dollars at a distance of 20 kilometers to Karbala by alk Enerji, an associate of alk Holding is being carried out as the greatest Power Plant of Iraq. There will be 10 gas turbines bought from General Electric (GE) by Iraq at the Al Khairat Electricity Power Plant. Besides natural gas, LDO (Light Diesel Oil) and Crude Oil can also be used. The power plant that has a power of 1,250 MW will increase Iraqs electricity production capacity by 20%. The Project in which more than 2,000 people have been employed since April 2011 will be completed in April 2013. This project targets the reduction of the problem of electricity shortage, which is one of the most important problems for the Iraqi community, by meeting the electricity demand for 24 hours in approximately 420 thousand households. Another Project of alk Enerji, Nainawa Electricity Power Plant is located 60 kilometers to the South of Mosul. The Project with 750 MW installed capacity whose foundation has been laid in May 2011 is estimated to have been completed in 20 months. Nainawa Electricity Power Plant, which will cost 388.5 billion dollars will meet the electricity need of 250 households for 24 hours.

When Ali (r.a.) was martyred in 661 and Kufas gathered around Hassan (r.a.), Hussain (r.a.) took sides with his brother. Hassan (r.a.) decided to come to an agreement with Muaviye in order for no more blood to be shed in the Islamic world. With this agreement it was agreed upon by both sides that nobody would be appointed in his place after Muaviyes death and the new caliph was to be chosen with the participation of Muslims. After withdrawing from the caliphate, Hassan (r.a.) went to Medina with his family where he was poisoned and martyred to death. Despite suffering agony due to his brothers death, Hussain (r.a.)clamed up, and spent most of his life in Medina, keeping away from political activities. After Muaviyes death, his son Yezid came into power in the Umayyad state, and asked for the allegiance of Hussain (r.a.) through the governor of Medina, who he saw as a rival. Hussain (r.a.) rejected the legitimacy of Yezids caliphacy as Yezid had announced himself the caliph, overlooking the election principles and the council. Seeing that the situation was taking a critical course, Hussain (r.a.) left Medina and went to Mecca. Meanwhile, he received pressing letters from the Kufas, asking him to take the lead. Whereupon, Hussain (r.a.) sent his uncles son Mslim b. Akil to Kufa so that he would make investigations on-site. Muslim got the allegiance of thousands of people in Kufa and informed Hussain (r.a.) accordingly.

Yezid, who was trying to consolidate his sovereignty had heard of the unfavorable news and dismissed the governor of Kufa, appointing Ubeydullah bin Ziyad in his stead, who was known for his fierce character. The governor had bn Ziyd Mslim caught and killed, and punished those who had paid homage to Muslim in the name of Hussain (r.a.) afterwards. Uninformed of these recent developments in Kufa, Hussain (r.a.) had set off with his companions. Hussain (r.a.) who learnt that Muslim was murdered on his way to Kufa consulted his fellow men and let them know that who wished to go back were free to do so however he had decided to continue with his journey. In the meanwhile, Governor Ibn Ziyad organized a troop under the commandment of mer bin Sad and set it on Hussain (r.a.). This troop besieged Hussain (r.a.) and his men in Karbala, and blocked their way to water sources. In the talks that ensued, Hussain (r.a.) was asked to pay homage to Yezid, and on his refusal to comply due to Yezids previous disregard of the agreement between Hassan (r.a.) and Muaviye, he was martyred along with his approximately 70 soldiers. All Muslims have taken sides with Hussain (r.a.), condemning Yezid and his army since the incident of Karbala took place. Him being the sacred grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, his unjust martyrdom, him having lived a life based on the Islamic doctrines of fate, plain faithfulness and morality have made Hussain (r.a.) the beloved of all Muslims.

You are the Global Director responsible from Tall Buildings in Hyder Consulting; could you please briefly tell us about yourself?I love being an Engineer, although I came onto this path almost by accident. I came from a flying family, and grew up around the scream

of engines and hot fighter jets. I started flying alone before the age of 12, and was instructing others in aerobatics at age 16, looking forward to joining my own teachers as a fellow Test Pilot when I was old enough to get a car license! University got in the way, and some chance encounters with wonderful Engineers drew me onto a path of building longer, stronger, faster and then higher. But my test pilot instructors forged an Engineer from a child. Make a good plan, check things for yourself, know your environment, think clearly and be awesome at something that matters. They lived by these attributes, and us kids learned the rules pretty quickly on the ground and in the air !

Sydney Harbor Bridge, London Tower Bridge, Burj Khalifa the tallest building of the world, and the other projects undertaken by Hyder are among the ones that prove the firms specialty in respect of iconic, tall buildings and constructions. Could you give brief information regarding the firms engineering consultancy services that is being offered to the clients?It has been a privilege for Hyder to be responsible for so many different parts of the built environment, used everyday by so many people in the world. The Engineering of such works involves all sorts of arts, technologies and sciences, and we are so lucky to have all the sorts of folks that are needed to bring together to create such complex works. Trying to list all the disciplines would not do them all justice. Sufficient to say that like all large International practices Hyder has either within the organization, or by collaboration, all of the righttechnical folks to solve all challenges that have been placed in front of us so far.

When it comes to Design Engineering and consultancy Hyder has proved its global leadership and highlighted its success with the international awards it has been granted.
