The California Welcome Center (CWC) in Yucca Valley, CA, is one of 16 California Welcome Centers located throughout the state,

established by Visit California, the state's tourism agency. The Yucca Valley visitor center is operated by Desert Regional Tourism Agency (DRTA), a non-profit organization, and is managed by Executive Director Kathie Ammar and a host of dedicated volunteers and staff. The California Welcome Center offers maps and brochures for lodging, dining, local attractions, state and national parks, and things to see and do. The center's gift shop features more than 40 local artists with one-of-a-kind items and souvenirs. Open daily: Monday–Friday 9–4, Saturday 9–2, and Sunday 12:30–4:30.

CWC Art Festival — Art Contest Judges 2019

The inaugural California Welcome Center Art Festival was organized by a steering committee of local artists and community activists, who

planned an Art Festival for May 4-5 and facilitated an Art Contest open to artists throughout California who were interested in winning a space in the welcome center to display and sell their artwork for one year. Five judges volunteered to select the winners of the art contest. The judges met on Saturday, March 23, to review 60 entries submitted for the various art contest categories, including Painting, Photography, Mixed Media, Jewelry, and Assemblage/Countertop artworks. Winners will be announced on May 4 at the Art Festival. Judging was conducted under the direction of Kathie Ammar, Executive Director of California Welcome Center Yucca Valley and Desert Regional Tourism Agency; Terry Taylor-Castillo, steering committee member and Director, Joshua Tree Retreat Center; and Vickie Waite of Desert Spirit Press, steering committee member, catalog designer, and technician for the art judging process and presentation.

JUDGES for the 2019 CWC Art Contest were: Bill Copeland, an airbrush artist since the 1970s in the Southern California automotive culture and commissioned artist currently living in Yucca Valley. Ed Keesling, artist, ceramicist, art instructor, former president of Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council, and art education chair for the 29 Palms Art Gallery and Artists' Guild. Michael McCall, curator, multidisciplinary artist, and current exhibition curator and Executive Director of the new Yucca Valley Visual and Performing Arts Center. Terry Lee Stone, creative strategist, faculty member of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, board member of Joshua Tree Retreat Center and president of their Whole Arts Auxiliary. Marcella Swett, multi-media artist, senior artisan at the Walt Disney Company, former art instructor and curator, and creator of sidewalk murals and paintings at festivals throughout Southern California.
