Aquatic Atlas Web Tool

Purpose/definition

A system for data management and visualization of information on the extent and condition of aquatic resources

The user interface for the Regional Data Centers

Map-enabled tool to answer questions regarding where aquatic resources are and how they are doing

Page 3: California Water Quality Monitoring Council 13 October 2010 · 401/404/1600. CRAM. L3 data. L3 data (Counts & Measurements. Photos & Video) Data In (local) Statewide reporting at

Key Features• Common base map that encompasses all aquatic resource types

(CARI)

• Project information across agency programs

• Ambient assessment data and reference site data

• Ability to generate project-specific reports

• Portals draw information from the atlas

Ability to answer questions about aquatic ecosystem health is independent of water body type

Portal vs. Atlas

• MWQ Portals: – Designed for primary audience of public, legislature, and

agency decision makers– Thematic question-oriented web sites– Directed, specific, information delivery

• Aquatic Atlas: – Exploration– Broader audience – managers, scientists, NGOs– Provides data and information that feed into the portals

1. All ecosystem health portals draw information from the atlas2. Oversight infrastructure needed to support both with cross-

communication
