Volume No. 133 July 2018
California Rosemaling Association The purpose of the California Rosemaling Association is to promote
the traditional art of Norwegian Rosemaling. Our members are committed
to preserving Rosemaling as a unique art form. CRA has approximately 125 members. Some are expert Rosemalers
others are beginning painters, all with a love to study this beautiful art form. Membership in CRA allows you to attend the
annual convention featuring renowned Rosemalers from around the
world, an annual membership directory and a subscription to the newsletter
for only $15 in annual membership dues.
Presidents’ Column Dear Rosemaling Friends,
Happy summer to all of you! As I am writing this, Rosemaling Coast to Coast is having their
convention in Decorah, Iowa. Our membership chair Judy Frank is there. I hope all who are
attending have a great time.
I’m gonna take a second to brag a little bit about my kids (daughter and granddaughter). They
are going on a tour of Ireland and Scotland, 16 days of fun. I’m so excited for them. Then my
granddaughter is moving to Baltimore. Yes, the other coast… I’m saving up travel points to
begin visiting. She will be there for two to four years as she does her graduate work at Johns
Hopkins! I’m so proud of them and I’m blessed to have them in my life.
Preparations are underway for our upcoming 2018 convention. If you haven’t registered yet,
please do so soon. We are trying to get a general idea of how many are coming. It helps so
much for banquet planning, classroom layout, etc. I’m excited to learn more about Os from our
very own Karen Nelson, VGM. I’ve never painted with Ken Magnusen, VGM, but I hear good
things. I hope everyone is excited about these teachers as well as a chance to visit San Diego.
Until next time, happy painting!

Our Teachers for San Diego 2018
Ken Magnusen, VGM
Growing up on a farm in southern Minnesota, I had no exposure to
Rosemaling. However, both my grandparents came from Norway. I
never saw Rosemaling until later
in life. My life's work was as a
veterinarian, working with all
kinds of animals. In 1975, I took
my first class in Rosemaling. From
there, I took many classes in
Decorah, Iowa, at Vesterheim.
Those classes were taught by both
American and Norwegian teachers.
My main interest was Hallingdal since that was where my
ancestors came from. In 2000, I got my first ribbon and in
2003 I had enough points to get my gold medal by painting in the Hallingdal style. Since then I
have studied other styles and have found that I really like Turid Fatland's old Rogaland style and
her use of different color combinations.
Karen Nelson, VGM
My Rosemaling journey probably had its start by being born in
Stoughton, WI to a Norwegian father and a Swiss mother. I moved
to California when I was 10 years old, but have always called
Wisconsin my home. While growing up many Norwegian traditions
were taught and Rosemaling played a big part in the decoration of
our home. In 1998 my life took a sharp turn and I realized I needed
to find a hobby. Having never taken any type of art class I went to a
local craft shop and
took a beginning
decorative painting
class. I knew from
the beginning I wanted to learn to do
Rosemaling. Not finding Rosemaling being
taught near me I discovered The American
Norwegian Vesterheim Museum; the rest as they
say is history. I have had the opportunity to take
many classes with American and Norwegian teachers. I also participated in the 2007 Vesterheim
folk art tour to Norway. There are many teachers and organizations that have contributed to my
being able to achieve my goal of becoming a Vesterheim Gold Medalist, I am thankful they have
shared and continue to share their knowledge with me. The best part of this journey have been
the many people I have met and the friendships that have formed along the way.

Getting to know your Board Members!
Membership Chairman - Judy Frank I came to Rosemaling by a very twisted path. In 1977 I started painting by
myself with Priscila Hauser’s book “For Whom the Brush Toles”. Three
years later I joined the SDP chapter Cactus Wren Decorative Artists’, and am
still an active member today. Through the years and multiple mediums I’ve
painted floral, cutsie, still life, people, folk art and stroke work. My favorite
has always been stroke work. Having absolutely no Norwegian heritage I
noticed this style of painting late in my painting career and decided to give it
a try with a beginning Telemark class with Lois Mueller at a SDP convention.
I loved it right off but it took several more classes with Lois and Gayle Oram
and a lucky find of Rosemaling classes in Phoenix with Teresa Palma to
really get me serious about it, I love the friends I’ve made at the classes and conventions and
enjoy the evolution of my painting. It’s been a very rewarding, happy painting discovery.

Treasurer - Shaun Sasaki I grew up in the Northern California Valley. I lived in town and spent
summers with my grandmother while mom and dad worked. I am an
only child and enjoyed all the things that grandma and I did
together. She taught me to sew, embroidery, cook and to knit when I
was very young. My entire family is from rural Missouri and we knew
we were Scotch Irish and Dutch (and more), whatever that meant. It is
not until the last two years that I understand that Scottish people
migrated to Northern Ireland to plantations run by the British, and then
later immigrated to the United States in the 1700’s.
I always loved sewing and crafts and in the early 1980’s a family friend had learned to Tole paint
and inspired me to learn. I was married with one child on the way living in Cupertino so taking
classes was difficult. In about 1990 I began taking German Folk art painting with Carl Larson
and thru a friend I met Margret Miller Utzinger. In 1999 I began taking classes in Rosemaling
with Margie and have painted with her ever since. She has been a wonderful teacher, friend, and
mentor. It is thru Margie and her painting friends that I learned about Norwegian customs, jokes,
and food. It is a blessing for me to have her in my life.
With Margie’s mentoring I learned to design my own pieces, sell my pieces (not an easy thing to
let go), and teach others to paint. I am inspired by Rosemaling and find so many other folk arts
from around the world to have similar motifs. My life took a turn that I never thought possible
when I was young and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn such a beautiful art
form.

Dear Rosemalers: Attached is the registration form for the Sept 22/23, 2018 Rosemaling Seminar at Camp Norge. Please send in your registrations as promptly as possible so I can get everything set up, just in case my moving date falls before Rosemaling. I want to make it as easy as possible for my successor. She will have quite enough to learn just finding out what to do once she gets to camp, so if I can get the registrations organized and the name tags made ahead of time, it will help both of us. I will send your supply list as soon as I receive your registration form. Only one stroke class this time at 6:30. The afternoon class was not well attended and it makes for a very early day for us who have to set up tables and chairs and get everything organized and be ready to register the students who come in for the 3:00 p.m. class. We will try it this way this time and see how it works. I will put a box on the registration form for you to check if you want to attend the 6:30 stroke class. No other notice will be sent. Stroke class is not included in the registration fee and you pay the $5 to the instructor at the time of class.

addressed stamped envelope for your supply list and class confirmation information if you do not have e-
mail. I will not be sending you a supply list unless you send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope or your
e-mail address with your registration form.
The cost of the seminar will be $87 for registration which includes the class and wood piece all
base coated and ready to go, hall rent, and the meals. There will be $25 cancellation fee for any

thoughtful. Melanie Souza will again do our cooking. The cost for food for the weekend is included in
the $87 registration fee. The food includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast and
lunch on Sunday. You were so very generous and cooperative with the cookies last time. I do so appreciate
that. We will ask just one class to bring cookies, and will rotate those classes each time. The information

Rosemaling Coast to Coast Convention The inaugural Rosemaling Coast to Coast Convention started Saturday, June 23 with a freehand Telemark
pre-convention class with Lois Mueller and then on Sunday an Os class with Karen Nelson. These were a
treat with so much information and instruction given. This was my first class with Karen and I am so
happy to be able to take from her again this fall at our CRA Convention. She shared too much for me to
take in at one sitting.
The ‘official’ start was at the welcoming reception Monday evening with a fantastic catered spread and
the sales room opening. There weren’t many vendors but they had a wide range of items and we pretty
well wiped out their stock.
Classes were held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and included a wide range of styles in both oil and
acrylic. My teachers were all well prepared with the surfaces prepped and ready for painting. Everyone
was saying the same for their classes.
Tuesday evening included a tour of Vesterheim and classrooms (and food). Then across the street for a
viewing and explanation of the murals painted on the meeting room walls by Sigmund Aarseth. What a
treat!
And then Wednesday…. Oh heavens! A group of us went on a tour of an auxiliary building of
Vesterheim to see the collection which isn’t on display. Rack after rack of trunks, boxes, bowls…
drawers and drawers of tray and plates… it was just too much to take in. Then back to the Luther College
for the banquet. Food was good and plentiful but the rommegrot bars, WOW that is one piece of
Norwegian culture I’m stealing!
Last classes were Thursday and time to say good bye to all our friends and exchange email and Facebook
addresses. I’m so happy I went to this convention and look forward to their next one. I came away
inspired and fired up to get painting again. Report and Photos by Judy Frank

Acrylic Tips - Varnishing By Candace Larson
Reprinted from Vesterheim Rosemaling Letter
This column will give you ideas on painting with acrylics in an oil class to emulate the oil look. Base coat
a cardboard with your background color for testing your colors and warm up for stroke work.
Selecting Colors
Acrylics dry 1 to 1½ values darker. You need to factor this into your color selections. Evaluate your colors
after they dry by testing them on your base coated cardboard.
Analyze the colors in the oil design. How are the colors impacted by oil painting wet-on-wet? You may
need to adjust colors if you are applying paint over a dry surface versus a wet-on-wet application.
Pigments
You will receive a supply list for your Vesterheim class. The supply list will list the oil paints. How do you
determine what acrylic colors to use?
Each color has an ASTM, (American Society for Testing Materials), number. The pigment numbers refer
to the pigment in the paint and are universal for oil, acrylic and watercolor. Look up the pigment
number for each color on your supply list. Google “oil paint pigment chart.” One site with a good chart
is: <wherefishsing.com>. Another resource is Joanne S. MacVey’s book, Rosemaling Heirlooms of
Tomorrow, page 59. The pigment number is the key to selecting your acrylic paints.
The pigment codes are:
PR = pigment red PV = pigment violet
PY = pigment yellow PBr = pigment brown
PO = pigment orange PBk = pigment black
PG = pigment green PW = pigment white
PB = pigment blue
Let’s look at the oil color Yellow Ochre. After the pigment code, it will list a number. Yellow Ochre is
PY42, or Pigment Yellow, number 42.
For JoSonja paints, go to<chromaonline.com> or if you have a copy of Chroma’s JoSonja Artists’®
Painting System, the pigment numbers are listed. The tube will also list the pigment number. Yellow
Oxide is Pigment Yellow 42.
Go through your supply list and check the pigment number for each color and select a paint that has the
same number. This will give you a good start on selecting your colors.
CalifRosemaler.com
15
Transparent / Semi Transparent / Opaque
How important is it if the color selected is transparent, semitransparent or opaque? It depends on how
you are using the color. Transparent or semitransparent are not good options for background colors or if
you want to base an opaque design element. Transparent and semitransparent colors allow the light to
pass through and are good color choices for glazing.
Let’s evaluate red pigments. A basic Rosemaling red is JoSonja Red Earth (PR 101, opaque) + Napthol
Red Light (PR9, PY74LF, PW 6, semitransparent). The Red Earth will increase the opaqueness of the color
and the Napthol Red Light will provide a brighter red or increase the intensity.
Painting Light Value Strokes on a Dark Value
The goal is to soften the stroke into the base color. This loading technique is effective for teardrops or
liner. Load your brush in the stroke or liner color, lightly tip in the base color. After loading the brush,
touch the brush tip to your paper towel to remove excess paint, then paint the stroke. By putting a
touch of the base color on your brush, it will “blend” into the base color when you initially set the brush
down. If you load too much base color, your stroke will appear tipped and that is not the effect you
want.
For example, Rogaland leaves are painted green and the teardrops are Unbleached Titanium. Load your
brush with Unbleached Titanium for the teardrop, then load a small amount of green on the brush tip.
Touch the brush tip to your paper towel to remove excess paint and paint your stroke as usual. Paint a
few strokes on your practice sheet to evaluate the amount of green paint on your brush.
Another Option
Here is another option for softening your strokes into the background.
1. Mix the stroke color with a drop of JoSonja Kleister Medium. Kleister will slightly extend the
open time of the paint and will provide transparency. Have this paint mix ready to go.
2. Base the design area with the base color plus a few drops of JoSonja Retarder Medium.
3. Immediately load your brush with the stroke color Kleister mixture and paint your strokes. You
will be painting wet-on-wet.
4.
Potential Problems
Strokes are runny:
You may have too much Retarder or moisture in the base color; or
You may have too much Kleister or moisture in your stroke color.
Strokes are too transparent:
Kleister adds to the transparency of the paint. Too much Kleister will cause your strokes to almost
disappear.
Caution:
If you wipe off a stroke you will also remove the background color.
I hope this provides some ideas for your Rosemaling.
Until next time,
Candace

What our Members Have Been Up To…
A Note from Jurene While:
It is with a great big thanks and hug for all
or you CRA’ers for furthering our group of
painters in my absence. I’m in awe of the
activies going on. It’s been a rough year,
but we’re finally on an even keel. Richard is
finally on a different diet for his dialysis
program and doing better now.
Although I can’t see well enough to paint
yet, we are coming to the CRA convention.
Right now I don’t know what we are
painting and who with, or if I can do it. So
please be patient with my registration for the
class.
Cheerio, and with love,
Jurene
Lottie Sather came away a winner in the
Sons of Norway, District Six Convention
folk art competition. She entered a tilt top
table that she had painted for her husband’s
75th birthday. Her designing and painting
took about five years. The first time she put
the boat on it was upside down when the top
was tilted! She had to cover it and start
over. “Needless
to say the table
did do a lot of
waiting for me to
be inspired to
paint it again,”
she noted. Lottie
won a Blue

Peoples’ Choice
for her efforts.
She also entered a

crown and won a
Red Ribbon.
Note from Marley Wright-Smith:
Thank you to the
Association for the lovely
house plant arrangement that
you sent when hearing of my
husband Jim’s passing. It is
beautiful and believe it or
not is still surviving in spite
of me. Also thank you to all the members
who sent their condolences.
This has been one of the hardest journeys
that I have had to endure. Over 5 years of
decline, 2 years knowing that I would have
to place him in a facility, and 16 months in a
wonderful facility. He developed a very
combative, aggressive manner towards the
end and I had to provide 24/7 care the last
2½ weeks.
The blessing was that he knew me almost
to the end. We had some moments that I
will always cherish during those 16 months.
The family was able to be with him for final
prayers and his eventual passing. What has
kept me going is the friendship and love of
God, family, friends, and Rosemaling. I’m
not sure where I would be without those four
things.
Again thank you and I look forward to
seeing each of you in October.
