    Getting Started with EndNote X3 EndNote X3 is a desktop program designed to help researchers through the process of writing a research paper, thesis or dissertation. This tool will help you organize and manage bibliographic citations and articles you find using the Pearson Library databases.     The opening screen will prompt you with these choices. Create your new library (topic) at this point.

    Create a New Library APA Style Preferences

    To create a new library, select File, New and when prompted, assign a name to your library. The “library” will be found in you’re My Documents folder. Within each library, you can create folders for sub-topics. These are called Groups. This is useful if you have a complex topic and are collecting research on several sub-topics. For example, if your topic is Emotional Intelligence, you can have sub-topics for research on Leadership, Emotions etc. Create a groups by selecting Groups from the tool bar and Create Groups from the drop-down menu.

    An important step is to set up APA 6th Edition preferences so that your work will be created in the desired style format. To select APA style, follow these steps: First go to Edit, then Output Styles Open Style Manager and select APA 6th

    APA Capital Letters Preference Selecting a Journal Style

    To ensure that EndNote will display article titles in proper APA style (e.g. capitalize first word in a title and first word after a semi colon) you need to set the capitalization style. Go to Edit, Output Styles, Edit Current Style, Edit APA 6th and under Bibliography, select Title Capitalization. Select Sentence Style Capitalization:

    . EndNote X3 also allows you to select style preferences for specific academic journals. This is useful if you are writing a paper for publication and plan to target your submission to a specific journal. Follow these steps to accomplish this task: Go to Edit, then Output Styles, the Open Style Manager and select the journal title.

    Selecting a Reference Type Using Connection Files

    When you import citations from an online database, it is important to select Electronic Article as the “Reference Type” so that EndNote will format the citations in the correct APA style for electronic articles. You will see various other choices too. To select the reference type, go to Edit, Preferences, then Reference Types and in the drop down menu select Electronic Article. This will set the format for articles retrieved from an online database.

    Connection files give you access to the academic library catalogs such as the Library of Congress. You can choose specific institutions and add those to your “connection files.” To connect to an online public catalog (OPAC). Go to Edit and select Connection Files, then Connection Manager and select a connection:

    Using Database Filters

    In order to properly import citations into EndNote and for the citations to display properly, you need to specify which databases you are using. For example, If you are downloading citations from WilsonWeb, you need to add the WilsonWeb filter. To set up the filters, go to Edit, Import Filters, open Filter Manager and select your filters:

    Searching Education Full-Text and Importing Records

    Searching EBSCOhost and Importing Records into EndNote Run your online search as usual. Add to the Folder citations you want to import to EndNote

    Select the citations you wish to export and Click on Export

    Make sure EndNote is selected when prompted:

    Now open the pop up box entitled “delivery” and click Save.

    Now, select a library or topic folder and your citations will be delivered to EndNote:

    Manually Adding References

    Sometimes you will need to manually create a reference in EndNote such as the reference to a book or article that you did not import electronically. EndNote enables records to be manually entered. Simply go to the References menu and choose New Reference. This opens an empty Reference window. Enter bibliographic data into each of the fields in the reference.

    Finding Full-Text through EndNote

    To automatically search for full-text articles, click on any citation then select File, References, Find Full Text. EndNote will begin searching for full-text. A paperclip will indicate that the full-text was found and attached.

    Creating Additional Groups Creating a Works Cited Page

    Go to Groups, Create Group. Enter a name for the new Group. Note: It is better to create additional groups under the same library to organize your research. For example, you can create a “group” for each topic or subtopic as you research your literature review. To create a bibliography or works cited page, open a library by clicking on File, Open and selecting the library:

    Select the citations you wish to include in your bibliography. Have Word open and click on the red arrow to import the citations.

    Using Cite While You Write

    With EndNote open, launch Word, open your document and look for EndNote on your Word ribbon. Makes sure you select APA 6th in the style window to ensure that all references will be properly formatted.

    Now select Insert Citation to find your citations and insert into the Word document. The reference appears at the end of the document.
