Mise-en-scene

• Katy Perry is seen exploring a candy world which, supposedly by her facial expressions, is a dream.

• Andrew Goodwin says, ”There is frequently reference to the notion of looking ad particularly voyeuristic tratment of the female and in some cases male body.”Perry is frequently shown in little-to-nothing attire. This portrays her as a ‘goddess’ ,it reveals her ‘sexy’ and not-so-innocent side and therefore is likely to attract a larger audience, i.e.males.

• The world is very bright, colourful and makes you want to be there yourself

• Andrew Goodwin quotes,”There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals.”There is not much relation with the lyrics to the visuals as the lyrics are talking about the California and the best points about it and in the video we see Perry exploring a candy world.

• Perry has a star image of being a strong, powerful and feminine woman. This video and its lyrics accentuates her star image. For example, when she when she frees a girl from a bubble with a stiletto, it shows her power but in a womanly manner as she uses a dainty shoe.

Intertextuality

• Andrew Goodwin quotes, ”There is often intertextual reference .”There is a connection with Perry’s video to the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, typically because of the candy setting. There is also a hint of Alice and Wonderland, as Perry acts very vulnerable in the music video and lost. She is also exploring the candy land which contributes to this point.

Audience

• Katy Perry is very popular with teenagers, aged 12+.

• I think this song’s target audience would be around the ages of 12-24 due to its pop genre, its release during summer, and it’s feel-good tune and visuals.
