    How to calibrate a P / I Transmitter

    With a built-in hand pump,precision measurement o bothpressure and current, and a 24volt loop supply, the Fluke 718Pressure Calibrator is a complete,sel-contained tool or the calibra-tion o P/I transmitters. To calibratea 3-15 psi / 4-20 mA transmitterusing a Fluke 718 30G Pressure

Calibrator:1. Depressurize the transmitter, and then plumb the transmitterto the 1/8 inch NPT pressureport o the 718. Connect thetest leads per the fgure above.

    2. Turn the calibrator on. (I youneed to power the transmitter, hold down the UNITS key whileturning on the calibrator.)

    3. Press the UNITS key until PSIshows in the display.

    4. With the 718s bleed valveopen to atmosphere, press the

    ZERO key.

Close the bleed valve. Set thepressure / vacuum valve to +,or positive pressure.

    5. Use the hand pump to applyroughly 3 psi to the transmit-ter. Partial pump strokes willapply small increments opressure. Use the fne-adjust

knob to get reasonably close to3.00 psi.6. Press the HOLD key, and record

the psi and mA readings. Pressthe HOLD key to resume read-ing.

    7. Calculate and record the error, using: Error = ([ (i-4)/16] [(P-3)/12]) * 100 whereError is in % o span, i is yourmeasured current in mA andP is your measured pressurein psi.

    8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 atmid-range, around 9 psi, tocheck linearity at mid-span.

    9. Repeat steps 5 through 7, nowat 15 psi, or a check at 100 %o span.

I your calculated errors arewithin tolerance, the transmitterhas passed your As-ound test, and you are done. I necessary, perorm your zero and spanadjustments, then repeat steps5 through 9 or an As-let test.Depressurize the line, anddisconnect the 718.

Dierential measurementsDierential pressure modules are useul in a wide varietyo applications, e.g., measuring the uid level in a tankor calibrating a dierential pressure transmitter. A Fluke754 Documenting Process Calibrator is shown.

I to P device calibrationThe I to P device is used to convert 4 mA to 20 mAelectrical analog loop control to pneumatic analog loopcontrol, generally 3 psi to 15 psi. Here, a typical confgu-ration or using a pressure module with a 750 Series DPCis demonstrated.

Sourcing pressureTo calibrate an instrument with pressure input, pressurerom an external source (such as a hand-held pump) isapplied. Prompts on the 750 Series Calibrator displayindicate when to increase or decrease the input pressure, and when the specifed test points are achieved. Here, aFluke 754 Documenting Process Calibrator is shown.

Measuring pressureTo measure pressure, the appropriate pressure moduleor the pressure to be tested is attached to the calibrator. The measured pressure can be displayed in a variety oengineering units. A Fluke 725 or 726 multiunction pro-cess calibrator could be used here.

P to I device calibrationThe P to I device is used to convert pneumatic analogloop control signals o 3 psi to 15 psi to electrical loopanalog control signals o 4 mA to 20 mA. Here, a

    A complete amily opressure modules

A amily o 29 pressure modulescovers the most common pressurecalibrations rom 0-1 H

    2O

    (0-.25 kPa) to 0-10,000 psi(0-70,000 kPa).

Gage pressure modules haveone pressure ftting and mea-sure the process pressure withrespect to atmospheric pressure.Dierential pressure moduleshave two pressure fttings andmeasure the dierence betweenthe applied pressure on the highftting versus the low ftting.

Each module is clearly labeled orrange, overpressure specifcation, and media compatibility. A metricadapter is included with all butthe P29 through P31 high pres-sure modules.

Quick and easymeasurementsFluke 700 Series pressuremodules are easy to operate. Tomeasure pressure, the technicianplumbs the pressure module toa pressure source, and connectsthe pressure module cable tothe calibrator. Pressure is ap-plied, measured by the pressuremodule, and displayed digitallyon the calibrator. At the touch oa button, the pressure may bedisplayed in up to 11 dierentengineering units. When usedwith the 750 Series Document-ing Process Calibrators, pres-sure readings can be date/timestamped and stored electronicallyor later retrieval. This saves time, eliminates errors, and supportscompliance with quality stan-

    dards and regulations.

Pressure moduleperormanceFluke 700 Series pressure mod-ules are highly accurate, with

    total specifcations that applyrom 0 % to 100 % o ull spanand rom 0 C to 50 C (32 F to122 F)a eature that sets themapart rom other pressure cali-brators. Many ranges have totaluncertainties o 0.05 % o ullscale and reerence uncertaintieso 0.025 % o scale (see Table,page 5).

This perormance is possiblethrough the innovative applica-tion o mathematics and micro-processor power. Fluke pressure

modules have silicon piezo-resistor sensors which consisto a resistive bridge abricatedin a silicon diaphragm. Pressureapplied to the diaphragm causesa change in the balance o thebridge which is proportional tothe applied pressure. The bridgebalance change is not linear andis very sensitive to temperature. However, since these eectsare quite stable with time andthrough repetitive changes ocondition, the sensors can be

very accurate in measuring pres-sure provided they are careullycharacterized.

During manuacture, Flukepressure modules are character-ized by reading temperature andpressure at more than 100 points.A least-squares regression is usedto calculate the coefcients o apolynomial expression or pres-sure. The coefcients, unique tothat pressure module, are storedin the modules memory.

    Each module has its own

microprocessor, allowing it to runthe measurement circuitry andto communicate digitally with acalibrator. When connected tothe calibrator, the modules coe-fcients are uploaded rom thepressure module to the calibrator. Then, as pressure measurementsare made, raw sensor values orpressure and temperature aredigitally loaded to the calibrator, where the raw sensor values andcoefcients are manipulated toderive and display the pressure

    reading.

This innovative technique pro-vides several benefts:1. Digital communication elimi-

    nates errors due to poor

    connections and electricalintererence.

    2. The modules are inherentlytemperature-compensated rom0 C to 50 C (32 F to 122 F).

    3. The modules are ully inter-changeable because allmeasurements are completedin the pressure module itseland then communicated tothe calibrator in digitizedorm. Modules are calibratedindependently o the calibrator, and can be used with any 700

Series calibrator. Each modulehas its own serial number toacilitate traceability.

Sensor protection inisolated modulesMany o these modules (seeTable) incorporate a stainlesssteel diaphragm to isolate thesensor. With these modules, anymedium that is compatible withstainless steel can be used on thehigh side o the module.

Rugged constructionA urethane overmolding protectsagainst shock i a module is ac-cidentally dropped and also sealsagainst dirt, dust, and moisture.Pressure connections are 1/4NPT. A BSP/ISO adapter is alsoprovided on all but the P29, P30and P31.

Convenient setupA one-meter cable between thepressure module and calibratorreduces the length o connect-ing tubing to the pressure source.

The remote pressure head alsoprovides an extra margin o saetyand convenience by removing thecalibrator and operator rom thepressure source.

For use with: Fluke 700 SeriesPressure Modules and the Fluke710 Series Pressure Calibrators.

Description: The Fluke 700PTP-1is a handheld pressure pumpdesigned to generate eithervacuum to -13 psi/-0.9 bar orpressure to 600 psi/40 bar.

The Fluke 700PTP-1 has twopressure ports: 3/8-BSP (ISO228) emale

parallel thread ftting or thereerence gauge or pressuremodule

1/8-BSP (ISO228) emaleparallel thread ftting or the

unit under testApplication: The Fluke 700PTP-1 eatures an integral pressureadjustment vernier which variesthe pressurized volume by 2.0cc over approximately eleventurns o the vernier knob. Thepressure variation achievablewith the vernier will depend onthe nominal pressure and totalpressurized volume, but with aminimum volume and maximumpressure, the vernier provided600 20 psi adjustment range.

With a minimum volume and nopressure applied, the vernier canalso be used to provide a 0 to70 H2O range. Larger volumeswill provide a smaller range oadjustment, but greater resolu-tion. The length o the stroke canbe adjusted to limit the maximumoutput pressure. Maximum outputpressure is adjustable rom2.5 psi to 600 psi.

For use with: Fluke 700 SeriesPressure Modules and the Fluke710 Series Pressure Calibrators.

Description: The Fluke 700HTP-1 is designed to generate pres-sures up to 10,000 psi/700 bar.The Fluke 700HTP-1 has twopressure ports: 3/8-BSP (ISO228) emale

parallel thread ftting or thereerence gauge or pressuremodule

1/8-BSP (ISO228) emale par-allel thread ftting or the unitunder test

Note: The user must provide a hose withappropriate end fttings rom this port to

the unit under test.Application: This pump canprovide up to 10,000 psi usingdistilled water or mineral-basedhydraulic oil. The pump is operat-ed by pumping several strokes toprime the system, then switchingto high pressure mode when theresistance increases. An integralpressure adjustment vernier knobvaries the pressurized volume by0.6 cc. The pressure variationachievable with the vernier willdepend on the nominal pressure

and total pressurized volume, butwith a minimum volume, thevernier provided 150-3,000 psi(at 150 psi nominal) and 3,000-10,000 psi (at 3,000 psi nomi-nal) adjustment ranges. With aminimum volume and no pressureapplied, the vernier can also beused to provide a 0 to 1.7 psirange. Larger volumes will pro-vide a smaller range o adjust-ment, but greater resolution.

Description: The Fluke 700LTP-1is a hand operated pressurepump designed to generate either

vacuum to -12 psi/-.85 bar orpressures to 100 psi/6.9 bar. TheFluke 700LTP-1 has twopressure ports with push ftconnectors. These push ft con-nectors, one or the reerenceport or connection to a Fluke700 series pressure module andone to connect to a unit undertest, connect to the suppliedtest hoses. These test hoses areterminated with 1/4-BSP (ISO228)emale parallel thread fttings thatcan be adapted using the fttings

included.Application: The Fluke 700LTP-1is primarily intended or lowpressure applications. It eatures afne adjust vernier with.00145 / PSI resolution at lowpressures. The pressure variationachievable with the vernier willdepend on the nominal pressureand total pressurized volume, but with minimum volume andmaximum pressure the vernierprovides 30 psi 6 psi. Theadjustable pressure relie valve

eatures a slow-bleed capabilitythat allows the user to slowly re-lease pressure at a controlled rateto achieve a desired pressure.

    PSID pounds per square inchdierential.

PSIG pounds per square inchgage (same as psi).

Square root extractor aninstrument or sotware programthat takes the square root o inputand puts the result on its output.Square root extraction is neededto linearize many ow signals.Example: orifce plates, ventu-ris, target ow meters, and pitottubes all require the transmittersoutput signal to be linearized.Mag ow meters, turbine owmeters, Doppler ow meters, andvortex shedding ow meters dont

require square root extraction.Static pressure the zero-velocity pressure at any arbitrarypoint within a system.

Wet/dry dierential a di-erential pressure transduceror transmitter that uses a metaldiaphragm at the wet port whereuids can be applied, and no dia-phragm at the dry port. The dryport exposes the sensor materialto the medium, so only clean drygas can be applied to this port.

Wetted parts the diaphragmand pressure port material thatcomes in direct contact with themedium (gas, liquid).

Gage pressure transducer a transducer that measurespressure relative to atmosphericpressure.

Ideal Gas Law combiningBoyles Law and Charles Law,results in the Ideal Gas Law:PV=nRT, where nR is constantor a particular gas analogous tothe number o molecules and therelative size o the molecule.

I/P (I to P) a current to pres-sure transmitter. A commoninstrument in modern industrialplants. A typical large paper millor refnery could have 5,000 I/Psin use.

Line pressure the maximumpressure in the pressure vesselor pipe or dierential pressuremeasurement.

Orifce plate a very low costand common primary sensing el-ement (PSE) or measuring ow. Itmust be used in conjunction witha d/p cell. It creates a venturi anda resulting P is developed acrossthe plate whose square root isproportional to ow.

    P/I (P to I) a pressure to cur-

    rent transducer.

Pneumatic relay reers to apneumatic instrument that per-orms a unction to its input andprovides the result on its output(Example: square root extractor, adder, etc.).

PSI pounds per square inch(same as psig).

    PSIA pounds per square inchabsolute.

Absolute pressure absolutepressure measurements arereerenced to zero pressure,(a perect vacuum.)

Absolute pressuretransducer a transducer thathas an internal reerencechamber sealed at or close to zeropressure (ull vacuum)when exposed to atmospherea reading o approximately14.7 psi results.

Boyles Law the volume o agas is inversely proportionalto the pressure o the gas atconstant temperature: V=1/P.

    Charles Law essentially

states or a fxed volume o gas,i the temperature is raised, thepressure will increase.P = Constant x T.

Common mode pressure theunderlying common pressure(or static pressure) within asystem rom which a dierentialmeasurement is being made.

D/P: Dierential pressure,(pronounced DP) other namesused to mean the same thingare d/p cell, d/p transmitter and

P transmitter (where is deltaor dierential). This is the mostcommon type o transmitter usedin most process industries. It canbe used to measure level, ow,pressure, dierential pressure, and density or specifc gravity. With some modifcations, it canmeasure such things as tempera-ture and oxygen purity. The d/ptransmitter can be pneumatic, electromechanical, or solid state. It can also be a smart transmitter.A typical large process plant can

have hundreds or thousands od/p transmitters in service.

Gage pressure the pressurerelative to atmospheric pressure.Gage pressure = absolute pres-sure minus one atmosphere.
