HYDROPNEUMATIC TANK SIZE CALCULATION Important information required for hydro-pneumatic tank sizing (a) Cut in pressure (b) Cut out pressure (c) Average capacity (d) Motor sizing (to determine no(s) of allowable start/stop per hour Hydropneumatic Tank Size = Effective System Protection Drainage Volume Effective system protection = Average Capacity x Average time taken to fill up tank Average capacity = Capacity @ average pressure point Average pressure (cut in + cut out) 2 Average time taken to fill up tank = ½ of total time assuming worst scenario of maximum no(s) of start stop occurs Example If system consist of 2 no(s) of DOL starting pump, the allowable start stop per pump shall be 20 times, thus for the system, the allowable start/stop shall be 40 times. (because system is design to lead-lag) Allowable no(s) of start stop is based on one (1) hour rate, thus, one cycle of start/stop at worst situation is = 60 minutes / 40 minutes = 1.5 minutes In this cycle, if we assume that the capacity of the tank is an amount which only be filled up / drained off in ½ T then the tank size is sufficient to serve as a buffer for that particular system. so, half T = 1.5 min/2 = 0.75 min Drainage Volume = 1 - CUT IN PRESSURE (psi) + 14.5 . CUT OUT PRESSURE (psi) + 14.5
