To avoid changing their pronunciation, verbs ending in –car (buscar), -gar (jugar), and -zar (empezar) have spelling changes in the yo forms of the preterite.

As in the present tense, IR ( to go) is highly irregular in the preterite.

To say “I went to the store”, you would say: Fui a la tienda

Using IR in the preterite

Use “a” + infinitive after IR to say why someone went somewhere…. Fuimos a la librería A comprAR libros.

Irregular preterit forms

The verbs ser and ir are conjugated identically in the preterit. The context of the sentence or the situation will clarify the meaning.

Notice that the first- and third-persons singular, fui and fue, do not bear a written accent. As we learned earlier, single-syllable preterit forms need no written accent.

Recuerda…(remember…) The verbs SER and IR have the same forms in the

preterit. Context will tell meaning:
