JREDS

Drosos Foundation is committed to enabling disadvantaged people to live a life of dignity. The Foundation is active in the following areas: fighting poverty and its consequences, promoting health, supporting ill and suffering people, facilitating the access to education and knowledge, stimulating creative activities of young people, protecting the environment.

Working both in Switzerland and abroad, Drosos Foundation places a clear emphasis on international engagements. The geographical priority in terms of the Foundation’s international commitment is the Middle East and North Africa. Besides projects in Switzerland partnerships also exist in the eastern parts of Germany. The Foundation develops and supports projects that have a direct bearing on improving the living conditions of particular groups of people. The Foundation seeks a long-term impact of its projects.

Drosos Foundation was established in Zurich in late 2003, and has been operational since the beginning of 2005. It owes its existence to a generous private endowment, and is a charitable non-profit organisation. It is ideologically, politically and religiously independent.

The Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) was founded in 1993 by a group of concerned responsible people, aspiring to protect Aqaba’s marine life from further degradation.

In August 1995, JREDS registered under the Ministry of Interior as the first and only Jordanian non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the marine ecosystem.

JREDS works to prevent the destruction of the Gulf of Aqaba by promoting sustainable management of natural marine resources, raising public awareness, encouraging community participation, and conducting environmental monitoring.

Over the last decade, JREDS, with the support of its 250 members, a staff of 14 people, 3 international and 100s of local volunteers in Amman and in Aqaba, has developed and expanded its 3 programs areas, under which 16 projects and initiatives are currently operating.

Our mission is to contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of the marine environment in Jordan through conservation, outreach, advocacy, and sustainable development programs and enhance the present and future availability of Jordan’s marine resources for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
