ActivitiesThere are still opportunities for you to enroll in the letter carving classes being offered by master carver Dave Reilly at his shop in Lemont, IL.  There is one opening in the class being offered on the

morning of November 13, one opening on the morning of November 20 and 3 openings in the afternoon session on November 20.  Applications are being accepted on a first come basis.  If you are interested in attending a class, let me know as soon as possible by calling me at 630-849-6211 or email at [email protected] and then mail the $20 class fee to our Treasurer, Tom Perry.  Make checks out to DuPage Woodworkers.

On December 1, we have scheduled a tour of the Technical Education Center of the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn.  Do not miss this opportunity to learn about the many programs being offered and to see the incredible facilities located  at the College of DuPage. The tour will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sign up for the tour at the November 17 meeting.

Programs

Flock IT! will be the program topic at the November meeting. Remember the fuzzy feel of those old greeting cards?  Or the lining in jewelry boxes that feels so soft?  Are you aware that this simple process is so easy and economical that even the home hobbyist/woodworker can create this same soft-to-the-touch finish on their own project?

DonJer Products (also know as Flock It! Ltd) has been selling their flocking kits to woodworkers since 1946.  Jill Goldman, owner of DonJer, will be visiting with the DuPage Woodworkers on Wed., Nov. 17, to demonstrate the ease of working with DonJer's Suede-Tex fibers.  She will bring

samples of finished projects and share some of the tricks to guaranteeing a professional looking finish.  Jill will also be available to answer any questions you may have.

At the October meeting. Karl Scogin from Woodcraft did a great demonstration on the use, sharpening, adjusting of planes. First of all, I did not know how many different types there are. There’s block, smooth, scraper, molding bench, to name a few.

Planes are old technology, but Karl showed that with understanding of the tool, it is by far an easier approach than to set up a table saw or other tool each time; it can cut a few thousands of an inch at a time. Planes can remove material quickly, smooth a surface or cut moldings with the proper tool. In surface planing it is best to overlap cuts and cut at a slight angle.

Karl Scogin from Woodcraft

The 2 most popular planes are the block and bench. The block has a 12 degree cutter blade (iron) face up for shearing cuts; especially good for end grain, while the bench plane has a 45 degree cut and the iron is face down for more aggressive cuts.

The cuts can be adjusted in depth as well as side to side for when lighter cuts are needed on one side over the other. Karl advised the proper way to hold the plane as one works with it and also stressed the importance of not damaging the iron when placing on it the workbench.

In sharpening Karl uses different water stone grits from coarse 800 up to 8000 and hollow grinds the irons. He starts out by flattening the back and then proceeds to the front. With a better understanding of planes, I’m going to dust off mine.

Door PrizesLen Swanson

The November door prizes will be a Porter-Cable trim router, a Bessey strap clamp, and a hodgepodge box containing 2 Bench Dogs, a Craftsman doweling jig, an Air Ride router base, and 2 blocks of ancient Kauri wood from New Zealand that are certified to be between 30,000 and 50,000 years old.

reach 700 with several members still working on them. Some of the toys have already been distributed to needy kids at a special school for them; most will go to St. James again as our host location and some will be given to the DuPage Humanitarian Project as was done last year.

Len also reported that there are several potential hands-on seminars identified for 2011 that will ease the job of the new Activities Chair. Possibilities mentioned were bowl turning, shaker boxes, sharpening, wood coloring techniques, picture framing and matting, and a tour of a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Kankakee.

Most of the open items have been closed. The procedure for borrowing club owned tools and the liability waiver have been created and a copy will be placed in the club’s document master file. The meeting with Judy Biggert took place with Stan Anderson, Bruce Kinney, and Jerry Johnson attending. She was very interested and well prepared for the meeting. As a result of the meeting she will be co-sponsoring bill H.R. 968 that deals with the testing problem and is in its early stages in Congress.

We still do not have nominees for the Activities and Prizes Chairs for the November election of 2011 officers. The current slate is:

Secretaryʼs Report Minutes of November 1, 2010 Board Meeting.

Rick Ogren called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Present were Dale Gustafson, Tom Perry, Peter D’Attomo, Bruce Kinney, Wayne Maier, Whit Anderson, Stan Anderson, Jack Pine, Bill Hochmuth, Len Swanson, and

Jerry Johnson. Reminder: Any club member is welcome to attend board meetings.

The minutes of the October meeting and the October treasurer’s report were approved.

As of November 1 there are 153 paid members – a new high for the club. So far, 78 have signed up for 2011.

Planning for the Christmas party is proceeding with the following decisions. Four $20 gift certificates from Rockler will be raffled off to the members via a free ticket to each member attending. A motion was passed that limited the other drawings to the $100 for the From Our Workshop drawing. (No drawing for Activities.) Every item brought to a From Our Workshop presentation during the year will earn one ticket. Club members and one guest will be free for the catered event. (A post meeting decision was made to allow other guests at $10 each.) Members are encouraged to bring a small dessert perhaps serving about six people.

Dale reported there are still several slots available in Dave Reilly’s carving seminar. On December 1 there will be a tour of the COD Technical Education Center.

We will need workers and exhibits for the December 10 – 12 wood show in Schaumburg.

Stan reported he has in hand, or nearly so, over 600 toys for this year. We may still

Dues DueBruce Kinney

Just a reminder that your 2011 dues for the DuPage Woodworkers Club can be paid at any time. You received an invoice in early October which was rich in graphics and used the latest in mail-merge techniques. If you haven’t misplaced it, take a second look at the beauty of the invoice and be proud of your Club’s presence on the leading edge. While you admire all that, take a moment to write out a check for $25 for your dues and send it to: Bruce Kinney, 405 West Bailey Road, Naperville, IL 60565.

If you are among the majority of members who have already paid their 2011 dues, thanks and go to your shop.

Proposed members for the appointed positions:

The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

Secretary’s Report continued Toys to Local SchoolWhit Anderson

I had the pleasure of going with Stan Anderson and Rick Ogren to distribute some of the toys made by DPWW members.

The kids loved the toys. As soon as the box was open, children eagerly reached for toys and gave them a good workout. Several of the students gave the pull toys a fast tour of the classroom. Others sat at the table and played with animals, cars, and other toys.

Christmas Toy DriveStan Anderson

Remember November 17 is the day that we will be collecting all the toys that have been made for this drive. It is also our next meeting date.

No finish on these toys. The only thing required is your fine craftsmanship.

Thank you notes to the people who made the toys

From Our LibraryThis month's library column features a DPWW member's review of two DVDs by Ian Kirby.

Mike Burke is the reviewer and he writes this info about Using a Hand Plane: Tuning,

Setting the Blade, and Planing Techniques.  “Kirby takes you through the essentials of using a hand plane in a simple but understandable way.  He explains technique and demonstrates it on numerous boards.  Specifically, he works across grain and with the grain, flattens boards, and explains which plane to use in certain circumstances.  My complaint of the DVD occurs here where I thought he should have covered a number of the specific types of planes and their uses, but most woodworkers probably use routers, scroll saws, and band saws for some cuts.

“He also spends time reassembling a plane which, for a beginner, would come in handy.  Keep an eye on his fingers as he makes adjustments to the wheel as his cuts get finer and finer.

“Importantly, Kirby covers how to prepare stock before making a piece of furniture or project.  Here he integrates measuring tools and other tools with the plane.

“Kirby demonstrates how to sharpen a blade, but you may  want to see his second DVD, Sharpening Planes and Chisels.  It is in more detail.

“All in all, this is a very good DVD for a new user of planes.  With a little bit of practice, anyone can find their planes a useful adjunct to their other tools and practices.”

Thanks so much Mike!  By the way, his review of Kirby's second DVD, Sharpening Planes and Chisels, will be in December's column.

Meeting Location

New MembersThe DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over

the region. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking.

If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.

If you have questions about joining the DuPage Woodworkers, please contact Bruce Kinney ([email protected]).

Holiday Party: Catered (and free)Plans are underway for the DPWW Holiday party at the December meeting (December 15, 7

pm). The December meeting is a family meeting and members are encouraged to bring a spouse, significant other, best friend, etc.

This year the dinner will be catered. Members are asked to bring a dessert of about 6 servings. The club will pay for the Holiday dinner for members and 1 guest. Additional guests will be charged $10.00 each. Peter D’Attomo is looking for about 4 volunteers to help him that night.

It is traditional that we provide a gift of wood made by our members for our guests via a drawing. These do not need to be heirlooms. Just an expression of our appreciation for joining us. In the past, gifts have included boxes, turnings, puzzles, cutting boards, scroll sawed items, holiday decor, carvings, picture frames, candle sticks, book ends, letter openers, pen sets, shelves, etc.

If you bring a guest you are encouraged to bring a gift. December is not far away on the shop calendar. Start the thought process and get into action.
