The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even
have time to eat. So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. Mark 6:30-32
It is difficult to believe but it is already August. Where has the time gone? We seem so
busy all the time, no matter how much we try to quiet down. But the truth is, we do need
to quiet down for rest before we begin again this fall. And not only do we need to rest but
it is also Scriptural. Jesus takes time himself away for prayer and rest and as we see in
the passage above, Jesus takes his disciples away for some rest. Unfortunately, as we
read on, we see that crowds follows them and there ends up just being a short time of rest
before the work begins again. Isn’t that the way it always is?
Well for the month of August, we at Saint James are going to find some rest. We have no
big projects taking place this month. We will not have started our fall activities. We will
just get rested up and fed so that next month, we will be ready for things to begin in
September.
So, what do you need from your time of rest? Do you need to take a nap? Do you need
to take some walks or develop new healthy living steps? Do you need some extra time in
prayer and in God’s Word? As for me, I think I will take some rest on the beach and
watch a few more sunsets this month.
For everything there is a season, and for us at Saint James, August will be a season for
rest and renewal.
Resting in the Lord with you,
Pastor Shirley
