LIBRARY COMIC CON PRE-EVENTS

We’re warming up for our third annual Library Comic Con, scheduled for Saturday,

August 29! That’s when thousands of comic fans of all ages don capes, tights, masks, and costumes for a fun-filled day celebrating the comics culture. Check out some of our pre-events, below!

May 2: Free Comic Book DayCelebrate National Comic Book Day! We’ll be giving away a free comic to each person who wants one, while supplies last. We’ll have titles for all ages, from Avengers to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

June 1- July 31: Draw or Paint Your Favorite Character!Draw or paint your favorite comic book, television, or movie character, or even invent a character of your own. Then, fill out an entry form and take your art and the form to the checkout desk at any Boise Public Library location starting Sunday, June 1, through 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31.

Entry forms will be available starting June 1 at any Boise Public Library location, and online at boisepubliclibrary.org/librarycomiccon. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in adults, teens and kids categories. Winning entries will be displayed at Library Comic Con on August 29!

Rules • Open to all ages. You do not need a library card to enter. • Entries must be your own work, and no larger than 11” x 17” • They may be black and white or color, and in any 2-dimensional medium • Submissions will not be accepted in frames and/or in glass or acrylic holders • All art must be submitted with an entry form. • Limit of one entry per person, please

KIDS FILMMAKER FESTIVAL: SHOW TIME! Be there as we roll out the red carpet to all our young filmmakers and audience! This spring, we invited all you creative kids who write, direct, produce, and/or act in your own movies, to show us your stuff! The submission deadline was May 1, so now we’re ready to show you what happened. Be sure to join us for this fantastic screening! Snacks will be provided.

STREAM FILMS— Filmakers* LibraryAt the end of May, teams of filmmakers from around Idaho will have 48 hours to produce an original short film, as part of the I48 Film Competition and Festival. (See http://idaho48.org/ .) With that in mind, we’d like to tell you about a related library service, Filmakers Library Online.*

Our subscription to Filmakers Library gives our cardholders access to over 1,200 high-quality, issue-based documentaries! The streaming video collection includes films about American studies, art and design, diversity, health sciences, history, literature, music and performing arts, psychology, social sciences, science, engineering and more. Gorge, her inspiring and empowering memoir, which she finished while working with Wild author Cheryl Strayed in the French Alps, will be published this Spring.

Arrowrock Dam: Idaho’s 8th Wonder As part of Idaho’s Historic Preservation Month, Kelsey Doncaster, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Historian, will present the epic story of Arrowrock Dam, the world’s tallest concrete dam. Built from 1911-1915 near the headwaters of the Boise River, the project involved a massive undertaking including a temporary town. The presentation will include previously unseen glass plate negative photographs from the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland.

3D Printing ClassesWe’re teaming up with three local training experts from HP to give you an overview of 3D printing! Learn about 3D printers, the software and hardware it takes to make them run, and the types of design projects available. You’ll also get a brief introduction to the Library’s 3D printers. Library laptops will be available for use, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Classes are scheduled on the last Friday each month, and are suitable for adults and teens; registration is required, due to limited space.
