Recently Pope Francis declared
a Year of Consecrated Life calling on vowed religious to ‘wake up the world’ to the meaning of consecrated life. We have been invited to—look to the past with gratitude, live the present with passion and embrace the future with hope. The reflections and prayers within this prayer book open a window for you to further understand the joy of consecrated life and its prophetic nature. Our mission, to bear witness in this world to the great love
of God and love of our neighbor, is demonstrated in our service to humanity and all of creation. Recent world events stress for us how much we need witnesses of love, justice, peace, hope and joy. Suffering abounds! How can we bring compassion healing and liberation to our world? Who will help us? This is our challenge. To strengthen our mission we need others to join us. As Pope Francis noted when talking about consecrated life “….It is a question of leaving everything to follow the Lord…in a special way, in
a prophetic way”. It is also to live this commitment in faith and communion with one another.
As you find some quiet time to spend with our prayers and reflections, listen to what God is asking of you. All of us are called to the love of God and to help others. God may be calling you to consecrated life. Listen carefully, God speaks softly.
Sister Patricia Eck, CBS Congregation Leader, Sisters of Bon Secours
Spreading the love of God
21
In September of 2014, Sisters and delegates from
around the world gathered in a General Assembly, a time of prayer and community commitment. We sought the Spirit’s guidance as we envisioned our contributions over the next five years to improve the lives of others in this new era of evangelization that Pope Francis champions.
Our Constitutions state, “We must find
Christ in others, in our daily work, in
every human situation. It is He whom we
serve in the ill, the children – His preferred
ones. Thus, the dialogue of Christ and His
Church with the world continues.”
(Constitutions #13)
As women of healing, we are protectors of God’s gifts, responding to human conditions, assessing the reality of our global world with eyes of faith; taking actions to improve the lives of the suffering and the environment. The reflections in this book reflect the commitments we made at our assembly.
We also include displays on consecrated life to mark the Church’s 2015 Year of Consecrated Life and our history, followed by an invitation to be a part of us – ways you can connect with us and engage in our activity. We hope you find inspiration in our reflections and prayers and that you feel invited to join in!

God has provided humanity with many gifts: the gift of life, the creation of our planet and the natural resources necessary to sustain life. As God’s disciples we are all called upon to protect these gifts, working together in relieving human suffering, establishing bonds across the land to help those who are in desperate need.
As women of healing, we Sisters of Bon Secours consecrate our life to provide compassion, healing and

liberation to the most vulnerable in society in nine countries.
We are aided in these efforts by other women and men of faith, who have made their personal commitment to serve. As we move forward, we strengthen our resolve to always be attentive to Jesus’ presence and faithful to the call to be protective of God’s creation.

Pope Francis calls upon vowed religious to share the joys of consecrating our lives to Christ with others, announcing the spirit of the Gospel message. When I first heard this clarion call to wake up the world as Jesus did, as a lay woman I thought, “How can I do this? I have no power, no influence.”
Then came the realization that the world begins with those around us: family, friends, neighbors and

Have I forgotten the gifts bestowed upon me at my confirmation? Are they laying dormant in the attic of my soul? What of the gifts of our Bon Secours foundresses–so much achieved by so few!

Simplicity of Life
109
As God’s children we are all called to love each other, bearing each others burdens, available to all in charity and humility. In responding to God’s call we find ourselves growing in compassion for others, responding with kindness and patience. We find a simplicity of life! A sense of peace.

It urges us on to spread the Good News of the risen Christ; to celebrate the Eucharist with our suffering brothers and sisters and strengthens our resolve to stand up for justice.
This is the lifeblood which sustains one’s faith. It is a life lived pure in heart and rich in accomplishment. It is a purpose filled life.

Radical Availability

“ ...the struggle for a more humane world is not
an option. It is an integral part of spreading
the Gospel.” (Constitutions #7)
These words proclaim our commitment to be radically available in protecting others from harm when threatened by the reckless acts of others. Humanity suffers in many parts of the world. Water supplies and soil have been contaminated–food supplies threatened and basic human rights diminished. As instruments of God’s peace, we must join with others as a physical presence speaking

Our founder, Josephine Potel, was radically available to the suffering of her people in her country, and in her time. Not only to see, but to get closer and act on a radical change. Now its our turn!

The scriptures tell us “to act justly” but we know there are circumstances and situations where there is a lack of respect for the other, a lack of fairness and equality for the other and a failure to attend to those crushed by the actions of others. We are called to act and advocate on behalf of those who have no voice against such injustice and to bring compassion, healing and liberation to people.

— Sister Eileen O’Connor, CBS (Ireland)
God’s creation surrounds and embraces us. From the heights of the mountains to the depths of the oceans all God’s creatures are sustained by the resources of this world. In the 21st century we are called upon to use the resources of the earth wisely and with great care so that the next generations will also enjoy all the beauty and richness of our world. Our Mission challenges us to live in right relationship with all God’s creatures including each other.

We all have a responsibility to get involved when made aware of someone in distress; to present a united front when faced with abuse of power by major corporations. We can not expect government or law enforcement to go it alone. We must become a force for good! Ask us how you can get involved.

When these values are threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised.” — Pope Francis
Friday— Sister Mary
Shimo, CBS (U.S.A.)
We are no longer a people whose knowledge of the world is limited to our immediate surroundings. Through the use of technology, we have gained an awareness of challenges beyond the scope of what we deal with every day. We only need to turn on the news or surf the internet to learn of human trafficking, exploitation of environmental resources and violence of all kinds inflicted upon innocent citizens. These are our challenges!

As we read these words we rejoice that God calls us to be prophetic, as advocates and protectors, supporters and loving companions to the poorest of the poor. Four of our sisters live in Limpopo, the poorest province in South Africa, tending to the villagers’ physical health, advocating

CBS through the years
OUR BEGINNINGS Twelve young women professed final vows as religious Sisters of Bon Secours in Paris, France on January 24, 1824 dedicating their lives to God and the care of the suffering.
THE FIELD HOSPITAL AT TUILERIES, FRANCE Both in the streets of Paris and in a quickly constructed hospital, our sisters devoted themselves to tending to the
wounded and the dying during the French Revolution.
BON SECOURS “GOOD HELP®” EXPANDS IN EUROPE In 1861, responding to the Irish famine, the Congregation created their first foreign foundation there, followed by another foundation
in 1870 in London, England to serve the need for quality nursing in urban and rural areas.
BRINGING HOME HEALTH CARE TO THE UNITED STATES On May18,1881 three sisters arrived in Baltimore, Maryland aboard the steamer Parthia, to establish the first institute providing home healthcare. The
sisters visited the sick no matter what their condition.
POPE JOHN XXXIII CALLS ALL TO SPIRITUAL RENEWAL ...through open dialogue and engagement in the modern world.
INSPIRED BY POPE JOHN Sisters create new ministries
including a mission in South America in Peru.
OPENING BORDERS With creation of an international Bon Secours effort,
sisters move to Tanzania and South Africa to address HIV/Aids, the flight of refugees, poverty and education.
CROSSING BORDERS By reorganizing structures, CBS more easily shares resources and moves across frontiers to address needs such as developing a
hospital and addressing infant mortality in Peru, becoming part of an alliance to build a hospital in earthquake stricken Haiti; sisters travel across borders providing assistance.
GLOBAL RESPONSE As women of healing, Sisters commit themselves
to defend and care for all of creation and cry out with others against injustice and all that diminishes life. Sisters promote environmental integrity and address clean water for all, advocate ending
violence and human trafficking and support legislationfavoring the most vulnerable and marginalized.
