KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWSCouncil 10804

AN INVITATIONYou and your family are invited to our Annual Open House

and Benefits Night in the Family Room on Thursday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. We will discuss the many valuable benefits of membership in the Knights for you and your family.

At the Open House, you will begin to understand that this “benefit highway” is a two-way street. Your membership (and, hopefully you and your family’s future participation) will help us become even more effective in carrying out the Knights’ core values of Charity, Fraternity, Unity, and Patriotism.

For example, in 2016, the Knights gave almost $178 million in charitable donations and volunteered over 75 million hours in charitable service, (which in dollars is valued at over $1.5 billion). These are very impressive numbers; however, there is one activity, the Order’s “Ultrasound Initiative,” that rises above all of the other “good works” that the Knights accomplish.

The Knights have already funded and placed more than 800 ultrasound machines towards our goal of 1,000 machines in pro-life pregnancy centers. It is estimated that each machine saves about 200 babies a year. That will mean 200,000 babies a year saved! It can’t get much better than being part of the “Ultrasound Initiative.”

Please look for our information table in the Commons next weekend (October 14/15) before and after all Masses. You will find helpful Knights who will answer all of your questions.

FAMILY BREAKFASTSunday, October 15 ~ After Both Masses

The Knights (at their round tables) will be waiting to serve you and your family our high-quality, low-cost breakfast. See the flyer in this bulletin for all details.

OKTOBERFESTThe Rumor Mill was right on target.

We will have another fantastic OKTOBERFEST celebration after the 5:30 p.m. Mass on October 21. Sausage, sauerkraut ~ the works! ~ plus dessert and beverages!Tickets will be on sale before and after all Masses:

Adults ~ $15.00Children ~ $10.00 (Under 12 Free)

We invite all of the men in our Parish to join our Council and help us make a difference!

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 8, 2017

Weekly Wisdom

The Early World Part II

We see the first exile of people (Adam & Eve) being in union with God, fail to trust Him and have to leave the Garden. This seems like punishment, but it is the road to salvation that is important to discern. The Bible is a composite of stories about exiles and returning; trusting and breaking trust; living for ourselves and living for others. All through the Bible, these stories reinforce the struggles we endure (crosses we must bear) to understand what love really means. God’s love is unconditional, and some might think that is a lie because He punishes people by exiling them from the Garden and later we hear of exiles of God’s people in Egypt and the desert. But that can’t be further from the truth. Unconditional love means that God or we who are in His image and likeness in fact do not give up on love of each other and Him. The hints are in the readings…God provided the clothing for Adam and Eve when they were naked, thus preparing them for the exile journey.

The same can be said in the story of Noah and the flood, it is filled with insight. God tells Noah to bring into the ark all the opposites: the wild and the domestic, the crawling and the flying, the clean and the unclean, the male and the female of each animal (Genesis 7:2-15). Noah’s ark is a mature metaphor for the People of God on the waves of time, carrying the contradictions, the opposites, the tensions, and the paradoxes of humanity—preserving and protecting diversity inside of a safe unity created by God. It is no accident that animals are deemed worth saving and that the covenant YHWH proclaims after the flood is “with every living creature,” not just humans as we presume.

God’s gathering of contraries is, in fact, the very school of salvation, the school of love. That’s where growth happens: in honest community and committed relationships. Love is learned in the encounter with “otherness.” *

*Some of this context was rewritten from Fr. Rohr, a Franciscan Priest who writes daily meditations.

Peace to all as we continue our journey.

Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147. Have a blessed week, Your AFF Team

and his love of all creation. St. Francis was a man ahead of his time in his understanding of and respect for the Earth. He loved all creatures through his caring for them and how he spoke about them. What enabled him to have such a respect and concern for creation? “What is essential is invisible to the eye,” as the book, The Little Prince, puts it. Francis had the gifted ability to recognize God’s presence in all creatures. His love for the Earth expressed his love for God. His care for the Earth was a reflection of God loving all of creation.

We are not St. Francis, but we can, and hopefully have, emulated his ways. We can work at opening our eyes of faith and our hearts, we can handle the goods of our lives as God’s gifts, we can look at the world around us and see God’s kingdom among us, we can encourage each other as one family to share our Earth graciously. Doing this, we are recognizing God around us, with us and in us!

“St. Francis testifies that each of us is called to protect our neighbor, that the human person is at the center of creation, at the place where God – our creator – willed that we should be.”

~ Pope Francis
