Weekly Wisdom

As we continue our journey through the Parts of the Mass, we focus on the Homily and concluding elements of the Liturgy of The Word.

•Homily – The Homily is delivered by a priest or a deacon. Often the homily will discuss the theme between the readings (there is a link or common theme between the First Reading and the Gospel). The homily also serves to relate the readings to current events and to our daily lives. It is a time for us to be instructed by the priest. It is not a passive experience because we are also examining the scriptures in the light of our own experience in relation to The Word.

•Profession of Faith – We profess the Nicene or Apostles Creed. The Creed carries us through the entire story of salvation history from Genesis to the book of Revelation: creation, fall, redemption. The Creed is a statement of our Faith.

•Prayers of the Faithful – This is our opportunity to bring our concerns as a community of faith to God. These prayers include our concerns for the Church, the world, those in any form of need, and the community. The usual response after each prayer is “Lord, hear our prayer.”

Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.

Have a blessed week,Your AFF Team

THE YEAR OF MERCY

Christ the King

Jubilee Year EndsToday Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus’ “royal portrait” is the cross. From this “throne,” the crucified “crown prince” welcomes by “executive pardon” the kingdom of mercy’s first citizen, a fellow criminal. The “Good Thief” requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: “Remember me when …” (Luke 23:42). “Today you will be with me,” King Jesus promises, “in paradise.” (23:43). Paradise, even for nonbelievers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator.

Today, we “good thieves” beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus’ kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus’ returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus’ mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy.

HURRICANE MATTHEW RECOVERY EFFORT:Hurricane Matthew caused severe flooding damage in our area. When a few inches or a few feet of water inundate a home, the loss is catastrophic: all floor covering, all cabinetry, and most appliances and furniture are ruined and must be discarded; the walls and insulation must be torn out up several feet. Several thousand families are in this process of ripping out and rebuilding.

There are federal government, city, and nonprofit agencies working on helping these families, but it will be a frustratingly slow process.

Faith Works Coalition (FWC), which our parish supports, is partnering with these other agencies to help families rebuild. If members of the Holy Family would like to help our neighbors, here are some ways to be part of the effort:

• Contribute funds: Contact Matthew Weinstein (see below) on where to send your check made out to “Faith Works Coalition” with “Hurricane Matthew Recovery” in the memo.

• Be a volunteer: It will take a lot of man and woman power to rebuild these homes and anyone can help; no construction skills are needed.

• Provide lunches: A simple sandwich lunch taken to the job site for work crews.

• Provide furnishings: We need donations of any good used appliances, furniture, or rugs.

For further information, contact Matthew Weinstein at (757) 621-3953, or email at [email protected].

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: “Jesus, remember me when you come into Your kingdom.” Will you make Christ the King and His merciful love remembered as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life? Call Father Michael Boehling at 804-359-5661 or e-mail at [email protected].

“THE UNIQUE BOUTIQUE” . . . SUPPORT FOR CANCER PATIENTS: The Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital’s Auxiliary is contributing more than hope for cancer patients in our community through “The Unique Boutique” cancer support service.

“The Unique Boutique” enables cancer patients to shop for wigs, scarves, and hats free of charge in a private, comfortable, and friendly setting. “The Unique Boutique” is located on the first floor of the hospital in the main lobby. Please call 757-395-8731 for information or to schedule a convenient appointment.

PRAYERS FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THE MILITARY: Every Friday, we say the Patriotic Rosary after morning Mass. Everyone is welcome. If you have a family member in the military and would like us to pray for them by name, please email Mary Sorrentino at [email protected] with their name, and branch of service. Please remember that we still have military members in harm’s way and keep them in your daily prayers.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” The celebration of Thanksgiving is here! Among all that we have to be grateful for, let’s remember to include our wonder-filled Earth and her multitude of resources, without which we could not survive. As in most cases, actions speak louder than words.

• So, we give thanks for our fertile soil by being careful not to overfertilize, by preventing erosion, by planting plants that enrich our soil.

• We give thanks for our Earth by shopping local and, if possible, for more nutritious and healthier foods.

• We give thanks for the air we breathe by avoiding disposables like styrofoam and plastic products.

• We give thanks for our Earth by buying only the food we need or having icebox jubilee with the leftovers, or composting the waste.

As Pope Francis expresses in his encyclical, Laudato Si: “Christian spirituality proposes an alternative understanding of the quality of life, and encourages a prophetic and contemplative lifestyle, one capable of deep enjoyment free of the obsession with consumption. We need to take up an ancient lesson, found in different religious traditions including the Bible. It is the conviction that ‘less is more’.”
