Career, Technical and Agricultural Education

College Credit While in High School

Move On When Ready, (MOWR) is a program that allows students with qualifying scores on the ACT or Accuplacer test to take college algebra and pre-calculus at Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Students have a similar program through National Institute of Technology for the Deaf, (NTID) with a Forensic Science course on-line. These fantastic opportunities allow students to earn college credit at no cost and to experience the rigor of college level classes. We are very proud of those participating and look forward to this program expanding in the new year.

Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education, (CTAE) are ever-expanding programs in Georgia high schools. AASD’s transition program, offers pathways to gain career awareness and hands on experience in different fields. Students here can take classes in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Business and Technology, Plant Science and Horticulture, Nutrition and Food Science and Audio/Video, Television and Film. Many older students also participate in Work Based Learning (WBL) and internships that offer on the job and soft skills training. Our award winning CTAE program has been recognized on a state level. We are very proud of our students and our hard working transition team. Below is a picture of this year’s CTAE and transition team staff.

Panther Tracks : Atlanta Area School for the Deaf December 2016

This month we were visited by Linsay Darnall, a Deaf man and Civil War expert. Mr. Darnell also does reenactments. He accompanied students on a trip to Stone Mountain and also presented to different grade levels here at school. He was very engaging. It was great to see the students learning about

American history in such an interactive way.

Our Festival was a HUGE success!

Thank you for your donations and participation.

Special thanks three of our moms ,

Huyen Le, Crystal Turner and Cho Mar .

Your extra help really made a difference!

For more on Mr. Darnell’s work you can visit his page at:

September 2016

Holidays can be stressful times for families. Sometimes a slight shift in perspective improves outcomes for everyone!

P – Planning ~ Don’t overdo. Pick what is most important.

E – Expectations ~ Be realistic and set reasonable expectations ahead of time for your family.

A – Awareness ~ You are building memories with your children. Gifts and meals will come and go.

C – Communication ~ Securing access to clear communication for your child, drastically reduces stress.

E – Experience ~ As adults, creating a loving, peaceful experience is what matters most.

You can do it!

Family ASL classes will begin again in January. This year we are able to offer 3 levels of classes and a sibling/friend class for children ages 9 to 15. Family learning is essential to the well-being of your children.

Classes are free with a $40 deposit. The deposit is returned if at least 6 of the 8 class sessions are attended. We hope the winter to early spring sessions will be convenient for your family.

Registration forms are on the last page of this newsletter.

Please contact Patti [email protected] or call the front desk for details, 404-296-7101.

School Council, Meet the New Chair!

Families make a HUGE difference at AASD. We are proud to announce the new chairperson of our School Council, Artecia McKinley. Mrs. McKinley and other parents gather quarterly with Vanessa and other staff

members to review initiatives and concerns at AASD, as well as budget items, our calendar and other poli-cies. YOU would be a welcome addition! Please join us for an open house and meet Mrs. McKinley, Tuesday, November 29, 5:00-6:30 PM.
