LITURGICAL WEEK
As a remembrance and a means of union with Christ, the liturgical year becomes a source of grace. With its succession of feasts and fasts it commemorates on the one hand events in the life of our Lord, His Mother, St. John the Baptist and also all those men, women and children who have achieved sanctity. Each feast brings into focus a special aspect and meaning of the divine order. The feasts of the saints, beginning with those of the Theotokos and ending with those of the most recently glorified members of the Church “celebrate a special grace that flows from Christ, for their sanctity is but an aspect, a shining ray of the holiness of Christ” (Fr. Lev Gillet). The festal calendar is a result of continuous development. Begun in Christian antiquity, it is always “in progress.” Each age adds to it its own significant ecclesiastical events and its own martyrs and witnesses of the faith, who in the purity of their hearts have seen the invisible God as in a mirror, and through whom divine grace has richly flowed to us.
The liturgical Calendar of the Oriental Orthodox Church begins on ‘Koodhosh-Etho’ (Sanctification of the Church) Sunday, falls on 8th Sunday before Christmas, the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord. So this will be the Sunday after 29th of October every year; for instance 2nd of Nov. in 2014.
Like we have seven liturgical hours per day such as 6pm: Evening, 9pm: Compline (daily retirement for sleep), 12am: Midnight, 6am: Morning, 9am: 3rd Hour/ Before daily work begins, 12pm: Noon and 3pm: 9th Hour/ end of daily work. However, for conveniant of community worship, the 9th hour of the previous day along with Evening and Compline complied together as Evening Prayer and likewise the Night, Morning, 3rd Hour and Noon are compiled in the Morning Prayer; and seven days per week (Sunday to Saturday).
“Each liturgical feast renews and in some sense actualizes the event of which it is a symbol; it takes the event out of the past and makes it immediate... The liturgical year is, for us, a special means of union with Christ” (Fr. Lev Gillet)
THE LITURGICAL YEAR IS ALSO DIVIDED INTO SEVEN SEASONS OR PERIODS. EACH PERIOD OF AN YEAR, EACH DAY OF A WEEK AND EACH HOUR OF A DAY HAS SOME COMMONALITY IN THEIR THEME! THE SEVEN SEASONS /PERIODS ARE:
It is arranged in such a beautiful way by the Fathers to lead us in a meaningful Christ centered spiritual life and for personal meditation that in every year we begin from the bingeing of Creation of the World to the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, then we grow with Him, becoming disciples, follow Him in His Public Ministry like His suffering, death, resurrection, ascending into heaven, descending of the Holy Spirit, growth of the Church and finally looking forward the Last Judgement and Second-coming. The same pattern and sequence we can see both in meditation theme of each day in a week and also in each canonical hour of a day!
Season of Annunciation: It starts from Koodhosh-Etho to Eldho (the Feast of Nativity of our Lord)/ Sunday/ Evening: refers the time from the start of Creation till to the birth of our Lord; covers the entire Old Testament.
Season of Epiphany: Eldho to the beginning of the Great-lent/ Monday/ Compline (before bed): refers the time from the birth of our Lord till to His Public Ministry; covers thirty years in the life of
our Lord.
Season of Great Lent: Great-lent/ Tuesday/ Night: the time of His Public Ministry; refers around the three and a half years that He ministered many those who believed in
Him.
Season of Resurrection: Feast of Resurrection to the Feast of Pentecost/ Wednesday/ Morning: refers the time that our Lour being with us as Resurrected Being and
Presence; covers the forty days till His ascension and the ten days that the Apostles and believers awaited for
the Holy Spirit.
Season of Pentecost: Pentecost to the Feast of Transfiguration (Aug. 6th)/ Thursday/ 7am: refers the time of the Growth of the Church through the propagation of the Gospel by the Apostles, Prophets, Martyrs and holy Fathers, Doctors and Departed of the Church.
Season of Transfiguration: From Aug.6th to the Feast of exaltation of the Holy Cross (Sep. 14th)/ Friday/ Noon: refers the assurance in Him and believe those who suffered for the Kingdom of God will be
glorified.
Season of Holy Cross: From Sep. 14th to the next Koodhosh-Etho/ Saturday/ 3pm: refers the Futuristic Period as we affirm in the last part of the Nicene Creed, “we look forward for the resurrection of the dead and a life eternal to come”.
While Sunday, being the first day according to the creation account of the Holy Scripture, represents the binging of Creation, when we reach to Saturday being the seventh day, represents Sabbath, a day of rest and hence the Church remembers all the Departed souls on Saturday! Likewise, while the Evening time represents the start of Creation, the 9th hour, the last canonical hour of each day, represents the Resurrection of the dead in Christ. This spiritual Rhythm and harmony is seen in every aspect of the liturgical life of the Church!
The Holy Scripture itself begins from the Creation story, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”(Gen. 1:1), prepares the way for our Lord through the Old Testament and in the New Testament it further explains that the ‘Word of God’ became Man in Christ, through His redemptive-works He paved a way to humanity, founded the Holy Church as His own bride and made her to await for His Second Coming, the Last-Judgement and promised eternal Salvation. He assures: ‘He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. And the Church pray and saying: “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev. 22:20).

Adn-bn-¸p-ImewSEASON OF ANNUNCIATION
Liturgical year of the Church begins on the Sunday of Qudoš
‘Edto (Sanctification of the Church) and the second Sunday
is Hudoth ‘Edto (Dedication of the Church).
Six weeks in the annunciation period present the Old
Testament and New Testament good tidings to various
people. It also represents the mystery of incarnation and
the Church instructs us for fasting in this period. Through
the twenty five days fasting we have to empty ourselves in
order to bear Christ in our hearts. Because the Saviour who
emptied Himself and came down from heaven [Jn 1:18; Phil
2:6-11] for our sake in order to raise us to heaven.
Annunciation was in the month of Nisan (April) but the
Fathers ordered it in the month of first Konun (December),
in winter full of woes and it depicts for us the type of this
world that is full of wretchedness; but then the angel of God
announced to us this gladness in Nisan which is a sign of the
world to come, in summer, full of joys and Christ, the Sun of
righteousness, was born.
The period brings the good news about the beginning of the
realization of the dispensation in Christ.

At the time of Ephrem, the Nativity and Epiphany were celebrated jointly on January sixth [The Canon 6 of the Doctrine of Apostles orders the celebration of the Epiphany on January 6th. There was only one feast of the Denho, which was the Nativity of the Eastern Church]. The Church father said that “(in heaven) above, you are from the Father without a mother. And on the earth, you are without a father, from the mother”. The killing of the innocent children and the visit of the Magi are also commemorated at this time.
The next day after the Christmas the Church praises St. Mary, the Mother of God, for this wonderful gift towards us. Mary gave birth to Christ for the salvation of the entire world. Thus Mary’s importance next to Jesus and first among the Saints is duly stressed on this day. Now Christ is re-generating through our hearts, so we are also called the bearer of Christ and the givers of Christ through our words and deeds. Only after the commemoration of Virgin Mary, the Epiphany of our Lord is celebrated and then afterwards the other commemorations and feasts are going to be started.
There are seven weeks in the period of Denha. The period of Epiphany representing three years and months which is the period after Christ’s Epiphany until his ministry was perfected in the adorable gospel. And on the eighth day after Christmasthe Church recall the Presentation of our Lord to the temple, and as the prophet said, Simon the Elder took the child in his hands; and the Fathers of the Church also said to remember the growth of the child that is the period of thirty years before the baptism of our Saviour.18 days before the beginning of the great Lent, the Church instructed us to observe the 3 days fasting as the Rogation of Nineveh .18 days before the beginning of the great Lent, the Church instructed us to observe the 3 days fasting as the Rogation of Nineveh.
This period celebrates the mystery of revelation of the Holy Trinity through the public life of Jesus that started with His baptism in Jordan. The week of baptism shows our renewal in Christ and redemption through Him. Most of the days of this period are provided for the commemorations of those who revealed Christ to this world through their life and deeds like Martyrs, saints, departed priests and faithful etc.

The third period of the Liturgical Year is called as Great Lent Period; starts from Kothne-Sunday and ends with Gospel Saturday. The Great Lent period has two parts, namely, the Forty days of Lent ends on 40th Friday, continued by Lazarus-Saturday, Palm- Sunday followed by the Holy-Week.
The theme of the Lenten Season is the redemptive Work of our Lord including His death on the Cross for the sin of humanity. In all seven Sundays and following weekdays, the Church remembers the signs, simples and wonders that He did for us in order to save us from the bondage of evil forces and to cure us throughly to witness and take part His Passion, Death and Resurrection.
Thus we meditate from the first sign He did at the marriage Feast of Cana, turning water into wine, to the last, rising Lazarus from the dead before He enters to Jerusalem for His final Passion and Death on the Cross.
The Fathers of the Church arranged this period as a period of total repentance with fasting, forty times of kneeling down and special prayer systems, namely Lenten Prayers and Prayers for the Holy Week. A full lectionary of the Holy Scripture is also provided for each day in order to meditate and ponder on the importance of each day.

In the period of Qyomtho, the church commemorates the salvific action of Christ, the second person of Trinity. It commemorates the mystery of the resurrection as the foretaste of our own participation in the risen glory of Christ in heaven. There are forty days between the Resurrection and Ascension. In those days the Disciples of Christ saw Him and He assured them of the blessed Resurrection that was sought by all the children of Adam. He showed in His ascension to heaven, likewise on the day of resurrection, that all the righteous and just would be entering into it.
As Mary gave birth to the medicine of life, the Church gave its sacraments to its inhabitants. Christ is the good physician and he has healed our race through his salvific action and through the work of the Holy Spirit the Eucharist became the medicine for the remission of sins and eternal life.
Christ suffered the passion of the cross, so that by his death he may vivify human race and ascended and sat in heaven, above the Archangels and Dominions. As in the first Adam we were condemned, in the second Adam we were justified.
Christ’s descent down to the earth was in order to cause the human being to ascend to his kingdom. Through the renewal the human being can enter into the Paradise like First Adam who was there before their fall.
God gave us the great redemption for Christ rose up from the sepulcher and through his resurrection there was salvation to all nations and sin was abolished from humanity. Through Christ’s resurrection, he destroyed the darkness of sins and errors and he produced hope, salvation, resurrection and life to men.

s]´-t¡m-kvX-ImewSEASON OF PENTECOST
PUBLISHED BY THE ORTHODOX DIOCESE OF AHMEDABAD
PENTECOST PERIODIt celebrates the mystery of the power of the Holy Spirit
worked upon the Apostles at the Pentecost. During the period
the church recalled the apostles and their disciples were going
around teaching all people and establishing the Church in
the entire universe. On the 50th day of his resurrection the
Church acknowledges his promise of the Spirit, the Paraclete,
who descended upon the apostles (Acts 2:1-4) and they
preached in all the regions. It concerns the afflictions and
tortures and killing which they bore and endured from the
persecutors; and the conversion of the gentiles in this period
and at the end of this fast the church commemorates Sts.
Peter and Paul, the pillars of the Church and its architects.
The explanatory title given to this period is the beginning of
the Church or the inauguration of the Church because with
the Pentecost and the preaching of the Apostles the period of
the Church is inaugurated. This period dealt with our release
from the worship of idols and our approach to the Lord and
our renewal through the Holy Spirit.

A little while before His Passion and His death on the Cross, Christ
isolated Himself for prayer on top of a hill, which is known by the
name Tabor. With Him were present His three exceptionally loved and
trustworthy Disciples, namely Peter, James and John.
This event constitutes a triple divine revelation, when the identity of
Jesus is revealed to the Apostles. That is not only the strange change
in His appearance and the inundation of light which emanated from
His face, but the witnessing of the voice of the Father and the presence
of the two most holy people from the “other side”, that is, Moses and
Elijah are confirming without a margin of doubt that Jesus is not just
a simple person, or a wise teacher, a virtuous reformer of some new-
wave of life-style, a charismatic miracle-worker, or even, a Prophet or
a Saint, but He is the Son and the Word of the Living God!
The Church recites: “You were transfigured on the mount, and
Your Disciples, so far as they were able, beheld Your glory, O Christ
our God; so that, when they should see You crucified, they should
remember that Your suffering was voluntary, and could declare to all
the world that You are truly the effulgent Splendour of the Father”!
The Transfiguration of Christ is a revelation of His divine identity and
certainly within the limits which the Apostles could uphold “so far as
they were able”. Furthermore, the Transfiguration of our Saviour is a
revelation of the Mystery of the Holy Trinity; The Son and Word of
the Father is present bodily on Tabor, as the God-Man Jesus Christ.
The Father is heard to be saying: “This is my beloved Son, with
Whom I am we pleased”. The Holy Spirit appears in a paradoxical
form of a bright mist. A bright cloud is an oxymoron! However, the
Comforter makes His presence perceivable in a “holy-paradoxical”
and most “God-properly” manner, above and beyond every “logical”
or “normally occurring” event!...
The martyrs saw a pearl on the top of the cross on Golgotha and
quickly drew it out with love by the sharp sword on their necks. They
rejoice and exult in the great glory, which our saviour has prepared for
them in the chamber of indestructible light. The Son crowned them
who witnessed our Lord before the world and they shed out the blood
for the love of God. In this period the church commemorates the

The period of the Cross denotes the symbol of the revelation of
our Saviour. By the cross of our Lord the earthly race of Adam was
saved and the thief was given life by it and inherited the eternal life.
The cross becomes a strong wall for the faithful holy Church in the
four parts of the world. It will drive out schisms, evil divisions and
scandals from her. It counsels peace and tranquility in her forever.
May all the children of the church be protected under the wings of
the Holy Cross.
The King Constantine saw the cross with great glory in heaven
and learned by the writing of the stars about the greatness of its
power. And he believed in its lordship and conquered the army of
the barbarians. And he sent his mother Helen to seek about it in
the city of Jerusalem. Queen Helen sent to the Jews and put on the
zeal of justice and said to the crucifiers: “Summon and gather to
me those who crucified the Scribes and interpreters and those who
are versed in all Scripture; I will speak with them and justify their
words about the sign which they denied, proves their words”. And
with great wonder, it was found on the 13th of September. And for
all the faithful it was an unshaken shelter. The church exalted its
feast on 14th September in every year. The Cross of our Lord was
veiled from the faithless people but it was shown through Helen
and its rays caused to shine upon the earth. All the creation which
was darkened by idols was lighted by it. The Church worships and
honours it, because it saved her from impiety and through it she
inherits the kingdom of height. The cross of light has shone forth in
the world for the salvation of all. And by the splendour of its rays
the world was illumined.
