To use Punnett squares to determine the possible genotypes and phenotypes of various offspring in a genetic cross. Background Information: Oh no! Minions are taking over the world! Gru and Dr. Nefario have lost control of their minion army and they are on the loose. Minions are everywhere and they are multiplying by the minute! Using your knowledge of heredity and Punnett squares, you will be creating your very own minion to join the minion brigade. In order to do so, you will need to determine the genotype and phenotype of the parent minions, as well as the genotypes and phenotypes of their possible offspring. To help you create your brand new minion, Dr. Nefario has reluctantly shared some information regarding typical minion traits and heredity. In minions, the following are always true: Tall (T) is dominant and short (t) is recessive. Wide body (W) is dominant and narrow body (w) is recessive. Two eyes (E) is dominant and one eye (e) is recessive. Full hair (H) is dominant and island hair (h) is recessive. Yellow body color (Y) is dominant and purple body color is recessive (y). Your task is to create two minion parents and their possible offspring. You must include a drawing of each parent and a list of their 5 genotypes for the above traits. Then, create 5 Punnett squares (1 for each trait) showing the possible genotypes and phenotypes of their offspring. Finally, you will choose 5 possible phenotypes for the offspring and draw a picture of one possible offspring of your minion parents. Your drawings should be colorful and can include other traits not listed above. Science - Labs

Activity: Minion Mania P2 P3 P4 P6P7

Goals:1. To show how the results of different gene combinations produce certain traits.2. To use Punnett squares to determine the possible genotypes and phenotypes of

various offspring in a genetic cross.

Background Information:Oh no! Minions are taking over the world! Gru and Dr. Nefario have lost control

of their minion army and they are on the loose. In minions, the following are always true:

● Tall (T) is dominant and short (t) is recessive.● Wide body (W) is dominant and narrow body (w) is recessive.● Two eyes (E) is dominant and one eye (e) is recessive.● Full hair (H) is dominant and island hair (h) is recessive.● Yellow body color (Y) is dominant and purple body color is recessive (y).

Procedure:

1. Hold your paper horizontally and fold it into 3 equal parents.

2. Label each of your three columns as shown below.

Name of Female Minion Minion Offspring Name of Male Minion

Page 2: Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools / Home Page - …€¦ · Web viewIn the left column, create a drawing of the female (mother) minion using the traits listed in the background information.

3. In the left column, create a drawing of the female (mother) minion using the traits listed in the background information. She must have at least one recessive trait. You may add any extra traits and colors, but you must include the 5 listed on the front of this paper.

4. Next, include a list of the mother’s genotypes for each trait. You can choose the genotypes as long as they match the phenotypes in your drawing. The mother must have at least one of each of the following genotypes - homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive, and heterozygous.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the male (father) minion in the right column of your

paper. Again, you may include any additional traits, but you must use the 5 listed in the background information.

6. When you are finished creating the mother and father minions, use the center column to create 5 Punnett squares crossing the genotypes of the parents. Under each Punnett square, list all possible genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring.

7. Finally, choose any 5 of the possible traits and draw a minion offspring. Under your drawing, list the genotypes and phenotypes of the minion offspring.

8. Extra Credit: Write 1-2 paragraphs describing your family of minions. Type your paragraphs using 12-point font and double-space your sentences. Include the following genetics vocabulary in your description: gene, trait, allele, dominant, recessive, homozygous, heterozygous, purebred, and hybrid.

9. Refer to the picture below for a basic idea of the set-up of your poster. Be creative and

have fun!
