TRAINEESHIPSA Traineeship is an education and skills training programme with work experience that prepares young people for a future career by making them ‘work ready’. This course is designed to help young people aged 16-24 who do not have the appropriate skills or experience required for an Apprenticeship programme. The course includes English and maths, interview skills and work related knowledge and skills.

BTECSBTECs are vocational and occupationally relevant courses which help you gain knowledge and vocationally specific skills. They are well recognised by employers and universities. Achieving a BTEC National Qualification over 2 years is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels Grades A-E. Achieving a BTEC First is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs Grades A*-C.

Achieving a BTEC Introductory Diploma is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs Grades D-G. All courses are primarily taught through assignment work and case studies and are tested through assignments and time-limited assessments. BTEC Awards and Certificates are accreditations for completing some units but not the full Diploma.

NVQS & APPRENTICESHIPSNVQs are job-specific, competence based qualifications. NVQs reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively. They are available to anyone, at any age or stage of their career development. The central feature of NVQs is the National

Occupational Standards (NOS) on which they are based. NOS are statements of performance standards that describe what competent people in a particular occupation are expected to be able to do. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements, and the knowledge and understanding that underpins competent performance. Achieving a Level 3 NVQ is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels Grades A-C.

Young people aged between 16 to 24 can earn while they learn on an Apprenticeship; there are a wide range of training opportunities to suit your ability and job preferences. By working to a structured training plan and gaining work experience you will achieve an Apprenticeship framework that reflects your ability. Functional Skills are a requirement for an Apprenticeship framework and an expectation within other courses. If you have not achieved a GCSE Grade C or above in English, maths or a Technical Certificate then you will work on these skills, with help from your vocational tutor, so that you achieve at least a Level 2 in all areas. This is the level required to be effective in work and to access higher level courses.

VRQSVRQs are practical courses that are usually assessed by tests and coursework. They are available in work related subjects such as Hairdressing, and are more job specific than other qualifications. Whilst studying a VRQ you will gain

knowledge, understanding and skills for a broad area of work or range of jobs.

SPECIAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTSSome courses require special entry requirements, such as a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate, references, the completion of a dexterity test, attainment in a pre-course diagnostic assessment, including testing for you to be in training in a job or be successful at an audition or interview.

The Admissions Team can help you identify whether you meet the entry requirements and the College can advise prior to an Admissions Event, what evidence may be required. Should you be interviewed at an Admissions Event and not be successful in receiving an offer for the course you applied for, you will be directed onto an alternative level that will enable you to progress.

MATHS & ENGLISHEvery 16-18 year old without a Grade C or above in GCSE maths and English will have to study these subjects at College. This can include Functional Skills and ESOL qualifications or if appropriate GCSE resits – see page 46 for further details about GCSE maths and English.

School: Hipperholme Grammar School.

What’s the best thing about your course? The opportunities you get outside of the curriculum, for example you get to go on film sets. These are opportunities that you can’t get anywhere else.

Best moment: Taking part in the competitions has been my best moments, because it throws you out there and helps build your confidence. Would you recommend Calderdale College to students thinking of doing your course, if so why?Yes I would, because you’ll get more opportunities here than anywhere else. You’ll learn more than just what’s on the curriculum, you’ll learn over and above what you need to learn.

So experience wise I’ll come out of here feeling like I’d be ready to work in industry. If I had done just what is on the

syllabus, I wouldn’t feel ready at all. The tutors show you that you can do it and it gives you that drive.

How would you sum up Calderdale College? The College is confidence building, they are aware of everyone’s individual needs, no one gets left behind and they do the best they can for each student.

Chosen Career/Wants to be:I want to work in Film and TV doing special effects.

What’s next? I am hoping to set up business with another girl on the course.

Katie Whelan, Level 3 Sport student, 17, from Queensbury said:

School: Queensbury School.

Why did you choose this course?I didn’t want to do A-Levels. I’ve always been interested in sport and at Queensbury School they didn’t really have the subjects that I wanted to do. I’ve done a lot of sport, I did gymnastics when I was younger, I’ve done karate, boxing, a bit of football and I’ve played rugby for five years. I’ve played for Queensbury, that was my junior team and then I was picked to play for Yorkshire under 13’s.

When I was 16 I joined Bradford open age, but continued to play for Queensbury as well. So on a Saturday I’d play for Queensbury and on Sunday I’d play for Bradford. At the end of last year I got picked to play for Yorkshire again, for the under 17’s and then we had the student trials at the start of this year and that is when I got picked to play for England. My course has given me a good idea of the things I might want to do afterwards. I’ve learnt a lot of new skills and the course is more than what I thought it would be - I really enjoy it here.

What do you think of your tutors? My tutors are really nice and I get along with them all, they are really supportive as well.

What’s next?I am thinking about going to university to study Sport and Exercise Science.

Do you think you would like to play rugby professionally?Yes I would, but women don’t get paid to play rugby. Because I’m playing for England students, we have to play in the association cup against the Army, Teachers and Lionesses and then from that an England coach will pick people to go for trials and that’s when they make up the England squad for the World Cup.

Would you recommend this course to other prospective students?Yes I would recommend this course. I’ve spoken to some of my friends who are in Year 11 now, who’ve said they are not really interested in A-Levels. I wasn’t either, I’ve told them if they are interested in sport it is worth coming here because, everyone in my class has achieved the highest grade on their assignments, you just need to put the hard work in.

StaceyMy year at Calderdale College

MY YEAR AT CALDERDALE COLLEGE

Stacey Illingworth, former Level 3 Joinery Apprentice, 19, from Halifax.

Why did you choose this course?Ever since school I’ve always been interested in Joinery. In school I did Product Design, which was the closest we had to Joinery which I really enjoyed. We made a bird house and I just really got into it and decided to come to College. I did Level 1 & 2 first and then the College found me an Apprenticeship.

Why did you choose Calderdale College? It’s close and I just preferred it to the other colleges, I liked the atmosphere and I know a lot of people here.

What do you think of your tutors?I think they are great; they speak to us on the same level. Whereas in school the teachers kind of talk down to you.

What does your qualification mean to you?I’m hoping it will take me a lot further in life. When I leave here I’m hoping that I’ll be able to do something for myself. I won’t just have to do a day to day job that I’m stuck with, I can do something that I actually enjoy.

What’s next?I want to get more experience and then when I’ve got enough confidence I’d like to set up my own business.

Would you recommend Calderdale College to prospective students?Yes, I would recommend Calderdale College, the atmosphere is great. You don’t feel like you’re an outsider, you can join in and the teachers make you feel like you’re on exactly the same level.

“I’m hoping it will take me a lot

further in life.”

MY YEAR AT CALDERDALE COLLEGE

Stefan Mazek, former Level 2 Health & Social Care student, 17, from Halifax who is hoping to be a Paramedic or a Nurse.

School: St Catherine’s High School then Trinity Academy.

Why did you choose Calderdale College?A lot of my friends were going to Calderdale College and it was a lot closer.

How would you sum up your course and your tutors? My course is fantastic, I like all of it. My favourite units were Anatomy and Physiology. I have been on a placement at the Skill Shop in Halifax twice a week for over two months now, working

with adults with learning disabilities and joining in with the activities, which has been amazing. The course gives you the work experience and skills needed in the workplace. My tutors are amazing, I get on with them and they really help you.

What will these qualifications mean to you?My qualifications mean a lot, it will open doors and other opportunities. It will help me gain the experience I need and help me get into university.

What’s next?I have applied to study Level 2 Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and Level 2 Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities and will also be studying maths and English at the College.

What’s your ultimate goal?My ultimate goal is to study at university, but I am still undecided about what to study and will need to decide between being a Paramedic or a Nurse.

Would you recommend your course to prospective students? There are not a lot of courses that give you work experience and this course gives you a lot of skills, knowledge and experience to help you when you go out into the world of work.

“The course gives you the work experience and skills

needed in the workplace.”

MarkMy year at Calderdale College

Mark Chambers, former Public Services student, 22, from Queensbury, who is now studying Criminology at the University of York.

When did you first realise what you wanted to study? The Police Force is something I have always been interested in. I first gained the knowledge from my time at College. The College was very motivational, they pushed me to explore things myself which allowed me to choose what I wanted to.

Best moment? My best moment at College was taking part in a week long residential trip in the Lake District which was fantastic. We did a lot of outdoor activities and team building exercises and personal exercises and I think it was good for making friends and getting to know everyone properly. My best moment at university so far was receiving a 1st for delivering a presentation to over 50 people and it is something I wouldn’t have been able to do without the College. You learn how to do presentations at the College; a few years ago I wouldn’t have been able to do it.

What do you like best about the College? My favourite thing about Calderdale College was how social it was and the location of the College was great being in Halifax town centre.

What did you think of your course? My course has been fantastic in preparing for university, in ways I wouldn’t imagine. You are going to learn new things, but the criminal aspects have been covered really well at College and when you come into a criminal lecture and there are people there that have never studied it before looking slightly confused and you’re thinking well I studied that, I know that it gives you a nice head start for learning. I also enjoyed how much I learnt outside of the academic objectives. You learn a lot of life skills, you do a unit on climbing and you can get certificates and grades on climbing.

What does your qualification mean to you?My qualification from the College has shown me that I can do anything I set my mind to. When I looked at coming to university it said I needed three distinctions to get on my chosen courses and the fact that I can knuckle down and get those good grades means so much to me.

How would you sum up your time at the College?I would sum up my time at Calderdale College as a great experience where you learn a lot of things and more than just educational things, you learn life skills as well and you make a lot of friends.

What’s next?I am hoping to get a job in the CID department within the Police Force - it is something that has always interested me.

Would you recommend the College to other students thinking of studying your course?I would definitely recommend the College; it is a great stepping stone and it does prepare you for university. Some of the aspects when you come to university are going to be new to you, but a lot of the criminal and political aspects within our course you have already looked at. The course covers so many different areas.

How did the College help you to get to where you are now?I’m here becauseCalderdale College motivated me to go further.

“The College was very motivational, they pushed me

to explore things myself.”

AlishaMy year at Calderdale College

Alisha Bi, former Level 3 Business student, 21, from Huddersfield, who is now studying Business Management at Nottingham Trent University.

How would you sum up your time at the College? My time at Calderdale College was really good. I gained a number of transferable skills which I still use in everyday life, especially at university. I also worked in the Enterprise Society whilst at College which enabled me to gain confidence and communicate better with people as before I wasn’t a very confident person.

How has the College helped you to get to where you are now?I’m here because Calderdale College gave me the right skills for university.

What advice would you give other students?I would choose a course that you enjoy. I didn’t think I would be good at languages, but I wanted to learn a language and thought I would enjoy it.

How have you found the last year at Nottingham Trent University?I have found it quite interesting. I have learnt loads of new things on my different modules. It is quite daunting at first, but once you start your lectures and seminars it’s not as independent as I thought it was going to be, you do get quite a lot of support from your tutors as well.

“I’m here because Calderdale College gave me

the right skills for university.”

What’s next?I am planning to do a placement year in my third year, but because I am doing French which is integrated into my course, I am hoping in my placement year, I will be going to work abroad and learn loads of new skills. My goal is to work internationally in a marketing company and hopefully to work with lots of different companies and combine it with my marketing skills.

STEM

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

STEM subjects are integral to the UK’s success. The UK is the world’s sixth largest manufacturer with an engineering turnover of around £800 billion per year; whilst the UK makes up only 1% of the world’s population, we produce 10% of the world’s top scientific research. Employers are finding it difficult to recruit STEM skilled staff and if you study STEM subjects you will have the potential to earn amongst the highest salaries of all new recruits. Studying a STEM subject helps young people, regardless of their future career pathway and ensures you have STEM knowledge and skills you need to be an informed citizen in an increasingly scientific and technological society.

The College is working towards achieving STEM Assured Status.

82 Calderdale College Course Guide 2016-17

STUDYPROGRAMMES

The 16-19 study programme is a new curriculum which allows colleges more freedom and flexibility to match courses to the needs of individual students based on their prior attainment/qualifications.

A 16-19 Study Programme includes:

• A substantial vocational qualification• GCSE English and maths at grade C or above or

equivalent Functional Skills qualification• Meaningful experience of work, tutorial time, study support and pastoral carestudy skills and other enrichment opportunities

WHAT IS A STUDY PROGRAMME?

The aim of the Study Programme is to maximise the potential of young people (16-19) to progress onto higher education and/or skilled employment by ensuring that vocational routes to higher education and employment are seen as high quality and a genuine alternative to academic routes.

- DfE, January 2013

““

Page 85: Calderdale College Course Guide 2016-17

STUDY PROGRAMMESCOME TO ONE OF OUR OPEN EVENTS!

83Calderdale College Course Guide 2016-17

Study Programmes are designed to allow young people to:• Progress to a higher level

of study• Know how to apply and be

successful when applying for a job• Enter employment with the

necessary skills that employers are looking for

• Understand wider personal, social, health and cultural issues that allow them to function confidently in society

• Access support and advice that will help them to make a success of their studies

ENGLISH AND MATHSStudents who have not achieved GCSE English and maths are required to study either an English or maths GCSE or Functional Skills up to Level 2. All colleges and schools who provide Study Programmes are required to ensure students attend and achieve English and maths, as this is seen as being essential to securing a good job with improved career opportunities.

Calderdale College has a comprehensive English and maths offer, where students are placed on the correct qualification based on a detailed assessment of their ability and career plans.

Maths and English are two basic criterias to gain employment in any role within the travel industry. A good command of English to at least Grade C is essential and it is imperative that English both written and spoken are of a high standard. Spellings must be 100% accurate to avoid possible mistakes and

potential business losses.A good standard of maths, even in the digital age is important if technology fails to calculate costs, discounts and selling prices.

- Donna Dodd, Cluster Manager, Thomas Cook

As an international company with significant export trade with other European countries and Asia, we require the ability to convey spoken and written English well to people whose first language is not English. For example, when constructing a written document sentences must be constructed so that they are grammatically correct to ensure the reader fully understands what we are saying. Maths plays a fundamental role in many occupations, and it is important students are able to apply numeracy skills accurately when preparing and using financial information. - Peter Jones, General Manager, Auxano Technologies

WORK PLACEMENT, WORK RELATED LEARNING AND ENTERPRISEAll students have the opportunity to develop their personal, social and employability skills in order to enhance their potential to progress into further study, training, employment or self-employment.

This can include a number of activities such as:• Learning to Learn (this

programme helps students to improve their ability to learn independently)

• A work placement• Work related learning• Employer visits and talks• Enterprise activities • Skill competitions• Charity events• Involvement in community

projects• Voluntary work

TUTORIAL ENTITLEMENT AND REVIEW OF PROGRESSAll students are provided with the following to support their learning and progression:• Regular one-to-one meetings

with their Progress Coach• Frequent progress reviews • Pastoral support• Assessment tracking• Target setting• Group tutorial activities• Directed study

WHAT MAKES CALDERDALE COLLEGE DIFFERENT?We are committed to providing Study Programmes that recognise individual students starting points.

These provide students with:• The opportunity to develop the

skills, knowledge and understanding to work in the area they are really interested in

• The opportunity to gain work experience that will impress future employers

• The chance to develop the critical thinking skills and entrepreneurial ability which are sought after by employers• The opportunity to achieve the

English and maths proficiency necessary to progress into the best jobs

• Learning that fully prepares students for a confident and effective role in society

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS For all course details visit: www.calderdale.ac.uk

92 Calderdale College Course Guide 2016-17

INFORMATION FOR PARENTSRAISING THE PARTICIPATION AGEThe Government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training until their 18th birthday from 2015.

CAREER ASPIRATIONSRaising the participation age (RPA) does not necessarily mean staying in school. Young people have a range of options to choose from the age of 16:

• Full-time education in a school, college or with a training provider (A-Levels, NVQs, BTECS & NVQs)

• Part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time (20 hours or more a week)

• Work-based learning such as an Apprenticeships

PASTORAL CARECalderdale College welcomes parents, carers and guardians to become involved with the College and the young person’s learning to maximise the success of their learning experience. We fully recognise the value and necessity of working together where the

student is still dependant on family support, and encourage you to make contact if any issues arise. Parents, carers and guardians will receive a written progress review twice a year, and will be invited to attend parent/carer events during the first and second term.

OFSTEDAfter visiting Calderdale College in 2014, key findings by Ofsted were:

• Outcomes on the Apprenticeship programme are outstanding

• Students and Apprentices make good progress in improving their personal, social and employability skills

• Teaching in practical sessions enables students to acquire the skills they need for work

• Teachers and Assessors promote equality and diversity very effectively

• The Principal and senior managers have high expectations of students and Apprentices, and promote high standards of quality and performance

• The College is highly responsive to the needs of employers and key stakeholders

A PARENT’S VIEWAlison Hamilton, mother of current Level 3 IT student Ainsley Hamilton, from Rastrick said:

“Overall any contact that I have had with the College over the last two years has always been a positive one. During the times I have visited the College I have found the staff (both teaching staff and support staff) to be very friendly, welcoming and helpful. I firmly believe Ainsley made the right choice.

Ainsley has had tremendous support and guidance from his tutors both at Level 2 and Level 3 of his ICT Practitioners course. He has grown in maturity since he enrolled at College and his involvement in extracurricular activities (particularly as Student Union Rep and Course Rep) at the College has helped to increase his confidence considerably.

I would recommend Calderdale College because I think the College offers first class teaching to all students of varying abilities. I also think it offers a wide range of opportunities for those students wanting to go down the vocational studies route which they would otherwise be unable to access at a school sixth form college.”
