Calculating HLB of oil Phase:

For selecting emulsifier for the formulation, HLB value is required. On basis of that

HLB, emulsifier is used in the product. For this purpose we will take ingredients of formulation one by one and perform their separate calculations. By doing so, new

values are obtained, which would be added later and required HLB is produced.

The formulation of product is as follows..

Oil Phase(30%) HLB

1. Soja oil(3%) 7

2. Avobenzone(4%) 9

3. Titanium dioxide(2%) 3

4. Butyl methaoxy dibenzoyl methane(8%) 6

5. Isopropyl myristate(3%) 11.5

6. Dimethicone(2%) 5

7. Mineral oil(6%) 10

8. Emulsifier(2%) ??

Calculations:

1. Soja oil:

3*100/30=10

10*7/100=0.7

2. 4*100/30=13.33

13.33*9/100=1.2

3. 2*100/30=6.66

6.66*3/100=0.2

4. 8*100/30=26.66

26.66*6/100=1.6

5. 3*100/30=10

10*11.5/100=1.15

6. 2*100/30=6.66



6.66*5/100=0.33

7. 6*100/30=20

20*10.5/100=2.1

Required HLB:

Adding above values, we get

0.7+1.2+0.2+1.6+1.15+0.33+2.1=7.28

So, we will select emulsifier having HLB 7.28 or close to it..
