RED RAIDERS TAKE WINNING STREAK TO WEST COASTTexas Tech will take its eight-game winning streak to the West Coast this weekend with stops at the Titan Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton and the San Diego State Classic. The Red Raiders will face DePaul, Canisius, UNLV and Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Saturday before making the short trip south to San Diego for a Sunday doubleheader against Long Beach State and San Diego State before the Monday finale against Harvard. It will be the busiest stretch of the season for the Red Raiders, who will play a total of seven games over the four-day stretch.

ON THE HORIZONTexas Tech will return to the friendly confines of Rocky Johnson Field to close out its non-conference slate as the Red Raiders will face North Texas in a March 19 doubleheader and then Texas State in a three-game series that runs March 21-23. Tech will play the next eight games at home following its California trip as Big 12 Conference play begins March 28 with a three-game series at home against No. 12 Baylor.

INSIDE THE SERIES• Texas Tech’s tournament opener with DePaul will mark the third-straight season where the Red Raiders and Blue Demons have faced each other. The two teams have split those two meetings with Tech taking a 2-1 victory in 2012 while DePaul answered with a 5-1 win a year ago. DePaul is 2-1 all-time against the Red Raiders as the Blue Demons also claimed a 5-3 victory in 2002 in a game that also took place at Cal State Fullerton.• Canisius marks the fifth first-time opponent for Texas Tech this season, joining the likes of Akron, Weber State, Creighton and Rhode Island. The Red Raiders are 4-3 in those games this season. • Texas Tech enters this weekend trailing in its all-time series with UNLV as the Rebels are 5-3 against the Red Raiders after splitting a pair of games last season. Tech dropped the Rebels, 10-6, early in the 2013 season before UNLV responded with a 5-3 victory later in the season. This will be just the third time the two teams have met at a neutral site as each of the past four contests were played in Las Vegas. • The Red Raiders will be battling Cal State Fullerton for the first time since 2008 in the Titans Classic finale on Saturday. Texas Tech is just 1-6 all-time against the Titans after losing each of the past six meetings, including a 7-2 setback on Feb. 29, 2008, in what was the Red Raiders’ last trip to Fullerton. Tech is 0-2 all-time against Fullerton on the road. • Texas Tech and Long Beach State will be meeting for the fourth time in school history on Sunday in the San Diego State Classic. The Red Raiders are 1-2 all-time against the 49ers with losses in 1999 and 2000 before Tech picked up its first win in the series on Feb. 17, 2012. Tech topped Long Beach, 2-0, that day in a neutral site contest held in Las Vegas. • Texas Tech and San Diego State have become familiar opponents during the Shanon Hays as the two teams will be meet-ing Sunday for the fourth time in a five-year span. The Red Raiders are 2-1 against the Aztecs under Hays and 7-4 all-time in the series that dates back to 1998. This is the second-straight year where the Red Raiders will face the Aztecs in their own San Diego State Classic. The Aztecs, who are 2-1 when facing Tech on their home field, took a 3-0 victory a year ago.• Like San Diego State, Harvard is another familiar opponent for the Red Raiders under Shanon Hays as the two teams have met in each of Texas Tech’s last two NCAA Regional appearances. Tech delivered a 7-0 rout of Harvard in the first meeting between the two schools during the 2011 Tucson Regional before the Crimson delivered a 2-0 shutout that eliminated the Red Raiders from the 2012 Seattle Regional.

RED RAIDERS OFF TO BEST START SINCE 2011Texas Tech heads to California in the midst of its best start to a season since 2011 when the Red Raiders set the school record for best winning percentage thanks in part to its second straight 40-win campaign. The 2011 club won the first 24 games that season en route to finishing 42-16 overall after falling to Arizona in the finale of the NCAA Tucson Regional. The Red Raiders take an 18-6 overall record to California following a successful homestand where Tech won its final eight games. It is the longest winning streak for the Red Raiders since recording 10-straight victories from March 9-16 last year.

AUCOIN, TALLEY LEADING TEXAS TECH TO SUCCESSFUL START IN THE CIRCLETexas Tech head coach Shanon Hays knew experience in the circle could play a big part in the Red Raiders’ success this season. Little did he know that the Red Raider pitching staff would develop into a dominant rotation led by senior Brittany Talley and sophomore Gretchen Aucoin, who enter this weekend with the Big 12’s lowest two ERAs. Talley has totaled a league-leading 1.08 ERA while Aucoin trails closely behind with a 1.17 ERA of her own. The pair have helped Tech record a 1.98 ERA as a team, its lowest average for a Shanon Hays club through 24 games in his tenure. The Red Raiders enter this weekend ranked third in the Big 12 for ERA, trailing only Baylor and Kansas. Tech has benefited of late from the emergence of junior Cara Custer, who 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA over the last two weekends alone.

TALLEY OFF TO BEST START TO A SEASON SINCE 2011Brittany Talley will look to continue her strong start to her senior season this weekend in California. The southpaw is 7-0 cur-rently on the season with a Big 12-leading 1.08 ERA that is the lowest for a Texas Tech pitcher through 24 games during the Shanon Hays era. She is the only conference pitcher ranked in the top seven for ERA to remain undefeated so far this season. Talley’s 7-0 start is just win shy of matching the best start to a season in her career as she opened her collegiate career in 2011 with an 8-0 record. Talley ended the 2011 season 14-7 overall, marking her most wins in a single season during her career. The Little Elm, Texas native has a chance to end her career in scarlet and black among the best pitchers in school history as she currently ranks among the top seven all-time in every pitching category. She needs one more win to pass Erin Crawford (2003-06) for fourth all-time at Texas Tech as she currently has 42 wins in three-plus seasons.

RED RAIDERS ON PACE TO SHATTER STOLEN BASES RECORDTexas Tech’s offense has taken on a new dimension this season as the Red Raiders, led by newcomers Sydni Emanuel and Lea Hopson, have become one of the most nation’s lethal teams on the base paths. The Red Raiders lead the Big 12 Conference and rank 19th nationally, averaging1.88 stolen bases per game. The quick start on the base paths has put the Red Raiders in position to possibly break one of the longest-running school records in the 81 stolen bases from the 2001 season. Tech’s 45 stolen bases so far are almost twice as many as the 24 the Red Raiders had through 24 games in 2001. With seven games on the docket this weekend, the Red Raiders will remain ahead of pace as Tech did not reach the same amount in 2001 under the 33rd game of the season. Emanuel is tied with the Big 12 lead with 19 stolen bases this year while Hopson is a perfect 13-for-13 to rank sixth in the conference. THIS WEEK IN THE BIG 12

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE DIAMOND• Texas Tech’s current eight game winning streak marks its longest since recording 10-straight victories from March 9-16 last season. That winning streak culminated around Tech’s trip to Southern California. • The Red Raiders enter this weekend among the national leaders in several categories as Texas Tech ranks 19th in stolen bases per game (1.88), 22nd for triples per game (0.33), 34th in slugging percentage (.498), and 35th for batting average (.318). Texas Tech’s 18-6 record is also 31st among teams for win-loss percentage. • The Texas Tech pitching staff also ranks among the top rotations in the country as the Red Raiders’ 1.98 ERA is 33rd nation-ally entering this weekend. Tech is the only Big 12 program with two pitchers - Brittany Talley and Gretchen Aucoin - ranked in the top 40 individually for ERA as well. • Texas Tech’s 1.98 ERA ranks third in the Big 12 entering this weekend. It is the lowest ERA for a Tech pitching staff through 24 games during the Shanon Hays era. • Texas Tech’s strikeout numbers are the best through 24 games in pitching coach Aly Sartini’s tenure as the Red Raiders have combined for 145 strikeouts this season which ranks fifth in the Big 12 entering this weekend. • Texas Tech has held opponents to two or less runs 13 times already this season as the Red Raiders have gone 11-2 in those contests. Tech has not allowed an opponent to score more than two runs in nine of its last 10 games. • The Red Raiders have started games well this year, plating at least one run in the opening frame 12 times so far this season. Texas Tech is currently 11-1 in those games with the lone loss coming in the Feb. 7 season opener against Akron. • Texas Tech has scored 75 of its 137 runs this season in the first three innings with 21 of those coming in the opening frame. • Texas Tech enters this weekend ranked second in the Big 12 with 45 stolen bases already this season. It marks the most stolen bases ever for a Tech club under Shanon Hays in the first 24 games of a season. • Texas Tech is one of just two Big 12 programs to have two players with 10 stolen bases already this year as Sydni Emanuel has swiped 19 while Lea Hopson has totaled 13 through the first 24 games of the season. • The Red Raiders currently rank third in the Big 12 with 137 runs scored so far this season. Texas Tech enters this weekend ranked 45th nationally in scoring with a 5.71 runs per game average. • After a slow start to the season power wise, Texas Tech totaled eight home runs during last weekend’s Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic alone, giving the Red Raiders 22 now on the season. Tech trails only Oklahoma (34) and Texas (24) for home runs so far this season.

QUICK HOPS FOR THE RED RAIDERS• Sydni Emanuel and Cassie McClure both rank among the top-10 hitters in the Big 12 entering this weekend as Emanuel’s .429 average is sixth currently in the conference while McClure’s .426 clip is eighth overall. • Gretchen Aucoin and Brittany Talley are both just one save shy of matching the Texas Tech career record of six that is shared by Erin Crawford (2003-06), Amanda Renfro (1998-01) and Julie Hauck (2004-06). Aucoin’s three saves this season is one shy of Crawford’s single-season record from 2006. • Sydnie Tapia enters this weekend with the longest active hitting streak as the sophomore has hit safely in seven-straight games entering this weekend. The seven-game hitting streak is the second longest for a Red Raider this year.• Cassie McClure’s 20 RBI so far this season is tied for seventh in the Big 12 entering this weekend. She is one of seven Red Raiders to already drive in 10 or more runs this season. • Sydni Emanuel is already half way to breaking the Texas Tech single-season record for stolen bases in just her freshman season. The Missouri City, Texas native has totaled 19 stolen bases through 24 games this season, 15 shy of Ashley Parker’s school record from 2006. • Samantha Camello boasts the longest starting streak for a young Red Raider team as the sophomore has started in all 80 games of her Texas Tech career. Camello currently ranks third on the team with a .349 batting average. Camello will be playing near hear hometown of Temecula, Calif. this weekend. • Cara Custer, after a rough start to the season, comes into the trip to Southern California having gone 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA over the last two weekends alone. Custer is now 6-3 this year with a 3.65 ERA in 46.0 innings pitched.

WELBORN MAKES TRANSITION TO BEHIND THE PLATESusan Welborn was mainly a pitcher or first baseman throughout her high school career at Birdville High School in the Dallas area. Already this year, the freshman has transitioned to the outfield, starting three games in either left or right field. Last Fri-day, Welborn moved behind the plate for the first time in her career as she was Texas Tech’s starting catcher against Rhode Is-land. She earned the start behind the plate again the following day against Sam Houston State. It was the first time Welborn had ever appeared at catcher in high school or travel ball. Welborn, who threw out the only runner that attempted to steal last weekend, gives Tech additional depth behind the plate with fellow freshman Brittany Lee and sophomore Kady Crow.

FULTZ DELIVERS IN FIRST CAREER START Ashley Fultz made the most of her first career start last Friday as the freshman belted a key three-run homer against Rhode Island in Texas Tech’s 5-0 victory over the Rams. It was the first career home run for Fultz, who has five RBI already this season as Texas Tech’s usual top pinch hitting candidate. Fultz is one of four Red Raider freshmen to homer already this season, joining Cassie McClure, Kierra Miles and Sydni Emanuel.

AUCOIN RECORDS DOMINATING PERFORMANCE IN ARLINGTONGretchen’s Aucoin 2-1 record in the UTA Hilton Invitational really doesn’t show how dominate the sophomore was in the circle. Aucoin appeared in four of Texas Tech’s five games on the weekend, tossing 19.0 total innings where she allowed just one earned run while striking out 26 hitters. In the Saturday doubleheader against Illinois and Creighton, Aucoin combined for 10.0 innings, surrendering just two unearned runs off three hits. She started off the day with eight strikeouts in four innings of relief to pick up the extra-innings win over Illinois. She followed up by returning to the circle 30 minutes later to match her career high with nine strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to Creighton. Aucoin enters this weekend as the Big 12 leader with a 0.76 ERA as she has allowed just four earned runs in 36.2 innings this season.

TALLEY NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK AFTER DOMINATING OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech senior left-hander Brittany Talley was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week this past Tuesday after her dominating performance at the Lions Classic. Talley powered Tech to its first win of the season with a two-hit, complete game shutout of Nicholls State on Friday night and then followed up by tossing 4.1 shutout innings two days later against Texas Southern. The Little Elm, Texas native was the only Big 12 pitcher with at least 10 innings pitched to not allow a single run, earned or unearned, last weekend. Talley also matched her career high with seven strikeouts against Nicholls State before finishing the weekend with 11 while holding opponents to just a .154 batting average.

JUNIOR COLLEGE TRANSFERS PAYING OFF FOR RED RAIDERSSince Shanon Hays’ arrival at Texas Tech in 2010, the Red Raiders have found success with junior college players, recruiting the likes of Logan Hall, Adriana Perez, Raven Richardson among others. Through 24 games, Tech’s current class of junior col-lege transfers have boosted the Red Raiders both offensively and defensively with Lea Hopson at second base, Kristi Belshe in left field and Kady Crow appearing behind the plate. Hopson, a College of Southern Idaho transfer, is among the Big 12 leaders with four home runs this season while hitting .281 with 13 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, leads Tech with six multiple-RBI games this year en route to hitting .293 with 16 RBI. Crow’s impact has been felt most defensively as she has started behind the plate six times already this season. Belshe and Hopson arrived at Tech after earning NJCAA All-American honors in 2013.

#6THISWith almost a brand new roster and a slew of freshmen, it was quite understandable when Texas Tech was predicted to finish sixth in the Big 12 preseason poll. Well, it was understandable for everyone outside the Red Raider dugout as Tech quickly adopted the motto “6This” for the 2014 season. The motto should be a driving force for the Red Raiders, who after finishing 30-26 in 2013, will be looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

RED RAIDERS BOAST LARGEST FRESHMEN CLASS IN SCHOOL HISTORYIn order to get back to the postseason, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have to rely on the largest freshmen class in school history. The 11-member freshmen class breaks the previous school record of eight freshmen from both the 2004 and 2010 seasons. It is also the largest freshmen class in the Big 12 this season as Tech has four more freshmen then Texas and five more than Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State. The group will be expected to not just fill a few roles but make an impact early as Tech tries to replace all three positions in the outfield along with holes at first base and catcher as well. TEXAS TECH RANKS THIRD IN WINS UNDER HAYSSuccess has been no stranger to the Red Raiders under Shanon Hays. Under the Lubbock native, the Red Raiders have flour-ished, winning 151 games in four seasons which already makes Hays the winningest coach in program history. Texas Tech’s success during this stretch has lifted the program from the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings as the Red Raiders are tied with Baylor as the third-winningest school the past four seasons. Tech is one of just three conference teams to record four straight 30-win seasons, joining the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. HAYS AND OLD FRIEND REUNITE Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have a longtime friend along his side throughout the 2014 season as Greg “Emo” Ev-ans joined the staff this past summer as an assistant coach. Evans, who previously spent nine seasons as the associate head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, will be responsible primarily for the Tech infield which, after setting the school record for fewest errors in 2012, struggled through portions of last season. Considered one of the top infield coaches nationally, Evans helped produce several of the top defenses in the country during his 25 seasons as a collegiate baseball coach. He will look to do the same in his first stint in softball as he inherits an infield scattered with freshmen but also with a pair of returnees in Samantha Camello and Sydnie Tapia. The Boyle, Miss. native coached Shanon Hays when he was first started his collegiate career as an assistant at Lubbock Christian. He would later move crosstown to Tech where he spent a total of nine seasons under longtime baseball coach Larry Hays, father of Shanon Hays. The Red Raiders experienced their most success in pro-gram history during that time with seven 40-win seasons and six trips to the NCAA Tournament.

CAMELLO RETURNS UP THE MIDDLE AFTER STELLAR FRESHMAN SEASONFollowing an impressive debut in 2013, Samantha Camello will be looking for more of the same this season after hitting .311 while starting in all 56 games a year ago. The Temecula, Calif. native became only the sixth starting freshmen in school history to hit over .300 in her rookie campaign, joining the likes of Mikey Kenney (2010), Stephanie Drewry (2009), Ashley Parker (2004), Sandy Butler (1998) and Paula Workman (1997). Camello, who split time between shortstop and second base as a freshman, led a powerful Tech offense during Big 12 play with a .275 average while playing in one of the nation’s top pitching conferences. She will likely be Texas Tech’s opening day shortstop for the second-straight season.

RED RAIDERS ADD PAIR OF NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS IN BELSHE, HOPSONSimilar to years past, Texas Tech once again turned to the junior college level during the offseason to fill needs around the di-amond, bringing in four transfers including two NJCAA All-Americans in Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe. Hopson, who starred the past two seasons at College of Southern Idaho, was among the top junior college hitters around the country as she hit .431 in 2013 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, led the NJCAA with a .590 batting average in 2013 while playing for Lake Land College in Illinois. Belshe was also the national leader in hits (111) and on-base percentage as well (.645) while also ranking third in doubles (26), runs scored (94) and slugging percentage (1.005). The pair mark the seventh and eighth junior college All-Americans to sign with Tech under Shanon Hays. 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Kaylyn Archuleta C Jr Alamagordo, N.M. RED RAIDERS TO BE POWERED IN THE CIRCLETexas Tech associate head coach Aly Sartini will have possibly the deepest and most experienced pitching staff of her tenure this season as the Red Raiders return a pair of veterans in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer along with expe-rienced sophomore Gretchen Aucoin. The staff will get an added boost, though, from the emergence of junior Chandler Moore, who, according to Sartini, had the best fall of her collegiate career. The four returners represent 94 percent of Tech’s total innings from 2013 and 29 of the 30 victories from a year ago as well. They will be joined in the circle by freshman Cassie McClure, the reigning Texas 4A-5A Player of the Year, and redshirt freshman Mattison Maisel.

CUSTER, TALLEY HEAD INTO 2014 ALREADY AMONG THE TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME GREATSMost programs throughout the country would likely feel fortunate to have one pitcher making her way up the school’s career record book. Texas Tech is fortunate, though, to have two in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer. The two pitchers have worked the majority of innings for the Red Raiders the past two seasons and will continue to be mainstays in the circle yet again this season. HAYS TO BECOME LONGEST TENURED COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORYAlready the winningest coach in program history, Texas Tech skipper Shanon Hays will add another career achievement to his resume in 2014. The fifth-year head coach needs 28 games to catch Renee Luers-Gillespie for the longest-tenured Tech coach all-time as he enters the 2014 season having already led the Red Raiders in 227 contests over his four seasons, 28 shy of Gillespie’s 255 from 1996-2000. Hays is currently third all-time in the Tech record book as he also trails Bobby Reeves (2001-04) by eight games as well. He will pass Reeves on Feb. 15 against Weber State and then Gillespie on March 15 when the Red Raiders face Cal State Fullerton in the Titan Classic. EVANS ONE OF TWO NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT THIS SEASONGreg Evans isn’t the only new face in the Texas Tech dugout this season as former Mississippi Valley State assistant coach Brooke Reed joined the program this fall as the new director of operations. Evans and Reed complete a staff that includes head coach Shanon Hays, associate head coach Aly Sartini and volunteer assistant Holley Gentsch, who was promoted from a graduate assistant position into a coaching role this season. Sandy Wellman, formerly James, will replace Gentsch as the program’s graduate assistant after completing her eligibility a year ago.

POWELL & TALLEY DESTINED FOR SUCCESS OUTSIDE SOFTBALLOne thing is certain after the 2014 season - Texas Tech will have a pair of seniors destined for success. The only two four-year seniors on the Tech roster, Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell are scheduled to receive their degrees this spring with Talley earning hers in chemical engineering while Powell will graduate as an animal sciences major. While highly successful on the diamond, the pair also sport two of the highest grade-point averages on the team. Talley, a native of Little Elm, Texas, enters this semester with a 3.8 GPA and has already accepted a position with Oxy, an international oil company. Powell, meanwhile, has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA entering her final semester and will look to attend veterinarian school following graduation.

TEXAS TECH SET FOR 24 GAMES AT ROCKY JOHNSON FIELDTexas Tech fans will have plenty of opportunities to catch the Red Raiders at Rocky Johnson Field this year with 24 home games set for the 2014 season. After three weekends on the road to start the season, Tech opens its home slate Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Sam Houston State and Southern as part of the Texas Tech Invitational, the first of two home tournaments for the Red Raiders. Tech will also host the fourth- annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on March 7-9, bringing in the likes of UT Arlington, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian and New Mexico State. Following a nearly week-long trip to Southern California, Tech closes its non-conference slate with a March 19 doubleheader against North Texas and a three-game set March 21-23 with Texas State. The two series begin an eight-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who will open Big 12 Conference play March 28 at home against Baylor. Tech will also host Oklahoma State and Iowa State in a pair of three-game series this season at Rocky Johnson Field.

RED RAIDERS PICKED SIXTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech was selected to finish sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll that was voted upon by the conference coaches. The Red Raiders, who finished 30-26 a year ago, have ended the season ranked higher in the conference standings than their preseason selection twice under fifth-year head coach Shanon Hays. Oklahoma, the reigning NCAA National Champion, was the unanimous pick to defend its title while Baylor, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State follow with Iowa State slated a spot behind the Red Raiders in seventh place.
