Crane capitalisation

The $535 million overhaul of one of world cricket’s most historic settings is well underway, with the iconic facility set to be transformed into a multisport,

50,000-seat venue when it reaches completion in March 2014.

Three companies – Morgan’s Cranes, Crane Services and Titan Cranes – are providing the massive project with everything from a 500-tonne Krupp to a 15-tonne Franna.

When completed the venue will become home to the Adelaide Crows and Port Power AFL sides, cricket’s Redbacks and test cricket and will play host to a range of major entertainment events.

With the Adelaide skyline currently showcasing cranes of every shape and size as work continues on a number of projects, including both the Adelaide Oval redevelopment and the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, Crane Services managing director Tom Giles said city construction had not been this busy for a long time.

With 43 cranes spread around the country including Australia’s largest fleet of Franna cranes, the company has 18 staff in its Adelaide workshop and three operators.

“We have had our 500t Krupp onsite at Adelaide Oval for the past few months and expect it to be there for at least two more months,” Giles said.

“It is the biggest crane in the state and has been working in all three of its configurations for this job – main boom, roughing fly and fixed fly.

“Because of its versatility it has also been able to walk with its outriggers out and it has been working to full capacity.

The South Australian crane industry is having a field day with its involvement in the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, Andrew Mole reports.

The biggest crane in the state, Crane Services anticipates that its 500t Krupp will remain onsite at Adelaide Oval for at least another two months.

“The main boom handles lifts up to 100t, with the roughing fly out to 40m and 60m and the fixed fly 22m.”

While Crane Services usually focuses on undertaking work in the mining and maintenance industries, Giles said the size of this major redevelopment was too good to miss.

In addition to Crane Services, Adelaide-based Morgan’s Cranes has also been capitalising on increased construction demand driven by the state’s major building projects.

According to company director Wade Morgan, the company has put its 15 and 25 tonne Frannas to work at Adelaide Oval, along with 30t, 55t and 95t Liebherr cranes and a 40t rough terrain unit.

“Our cranes have worked on all the piling in the project, as well as helping out with general construction,” Morgan said.

“At various stages we have used all seven of our cranes and we have been involved with the Royal Adelaide Hospital project as well.”

Morgan’s Cranes opened its doors for business in 2005 with just one crane in operation, but has rapidly grown both its fleet and business.

Today, Morgan said he operates on projects across Australia due to his work on major South Australian developments, which include the Adelaide desalination plant ETSA high voltage towers and the Australian Submarine Corporation.

For now however, the star of the construction show in Adelaide remains the 50,000-seat Adelaide Oval which, once completed, will

boast a new indoor cricket training centre incorporating a high performance gym and associated player facilities.

Canberra has contributed $30 million to fund onsite underground car parking, reducing the impact on the surrounding parklands of the city’s green belt and enabling the state government to fund further riverbank improvements.

The southern stand and entrance plaza will be completed prior to the Ashes Test later this year, while the eastern stand will be completed in time for the 2014 AFL season.

A number of items from existing structures will also be salvaged as part of the redevelopment. This will include the current spectator seating which will be made available to sporting and community clubs across the state, as well as the roof structures of the Clem Hill Stand which will be salvaged for reuse.

The Victor Richardson Gates will be installed as part of a new eastern entrance, while the Bradman Collection will be temporarily stored and re-exhibited in the new southern stand.

A government spokesman stated that, when finished, Adelaide Oval will have 77% of its seating undercover, family and restroom facilities in excess of national standards, food and beverage facilities no more than 40m from any seat, 2000 dining spaces, corporate capacity of 3800, multiple replay screens and 10m wide concourses.

It is anticipated that the screens will be 150 and 200 square metres respectively, making them substantially bigger than the current screens at the MCG. CL
