IELTS Study Tips - A week before the test

    A week before the examination

Look back at your revision programme. Is it complete? Aren't there some things you want to lookat again? Use this week for some focused revision.Review your revision notes every day. Try reviewing your notes without looking at them. Whichparts are difficult to remember? Concentrate on learning those parts.Remember that the examination asks you to do things in English. It is not a test of how well youremember your notes. Use your time to do some relaxing things in English.Look back at the written work you did a year ago. Do you see how much you have improved?Think positively about yourself and your achievements.

Think about what you are going to wear for the examination. You should be comfortable, but try to

choose something special for this special day. This means that when you put on those clothes, youwill already be preparing yourself for the examination.

Get as much sleep as you can. Don't waste time worrying about the examination. You will not learn anything byworrying. Find some time to take exercise. You can try to remember phrasal verbs when you are jogging or plan acomposition whilst you take a walk.Travel to the place where you will take the examination. Check that you know the way and the time. Use the journeytime to plan your examination strategy.Remember to send 'good luck' messages to all your friends who are taking the same examination. The night before the examination don't eat a heavy meal. Eat something light but nutritious. Avoid alcohol. Takesome exercise and go to bed early.

On the day of the examinationDress in your 'examination clothes' and prepare yourself for this special day. Open and read the 'good luck' messagesfrom your friends. Have a good breakfast but don't drink too much. You shouldn't feel hungry or uncomfortable inany way during the examination.

Check through the 'time plan' you have made for the examination. Know how much time you will give to eachquestion. Check you have given yourself time for checking and correcting.Check that you have all the pens and papers you need for the examination. For many examinations you may needsome identification papers.

As you travel to the place of the examination, remind yourself of your examination strategy.

During the examinationFocus your mind on what you have to do. Don't be distracted by outside things or by other students.Keep an eye on the clock but try not to hurry. Always give yourself time to check your work.

IELTS Study Tips - A month before the test

A month before the examinationYour final review should start a month before the examination. Make a planned programme for

    your revision work.

Start by thinking about what you can do well and what you do badly. You can gain more marksby improving on your weaknesses than by polishing things which you can already do well.

Make sure you understand the exact requirements of the examination and your own strengths and

weaknesses. Make a focused revision programme which concentrates on the things which cangain the most marks.

Don't overwork! Always build some relaxation (not too much!) into your revision programme.

If you like working with friends, don't let your revision programme be a lonely time. Work in co-

operation with other students. You can learn as much through helping as by being helped!

Use multi-sensory revisionWe learn and remember information as pictures, sounds and movements. Think about linking thethings you have learnt to pictures, diagrams, music, sounds, movements or sensations. You will

find they are easier to remember.

Think of past events in black and white, present events in real colour and future events in strangefuturistic colours.

Memorising vocabularyYou can memorise vocabulary by making pictures in your mind or on paper and labelling the

different things in the picture. Test yourself regularly.

Vocabulary cards, with the word on one side and an example sentence, translation or picture onthe reverse, are very useful for revising vocabulary when travelling (NOT if you are driving!).

Practise making word families like happiness, happy, happily.

Understanding GrammarCheck through your grammar reference notes and tick off the things you really understand.

Concentrate on the areas where your understanding is not so clear. Try to make examples from

your own knowledge or experience to help you remember the forms.

Use past papersPractice exams are very useful for your revision particularly if you time yourself strictly. Don't

let practice exams make you depressed. They can be really useful in showing what you need to

    practise and learn.

Use your teacherYour teacher knows you very well. Ask your teacher for advice on your revision programme.

Build some 'rewards' into your revision programme!Make a tough revision programme for yourself and work hard but build in some rewards foryourself after you have completed each stage of revision satisfactorily

    How to Prepare for IELTS

Step 1: Start with searching the web. There you will find a lot of information about the test,e.g.

the test format, how many sections it has, etc.

Step 2: Consult with your nearest British Council, as they will provide you many helpfulmaterials for taking the test, or you may like to join the British council to have practice classes

    for the test.

Step 3: Try to find out your weak points and start working on them (e.g.-if you are not so strongin the writing section then you should start with this and eventually you will end up in liking it),

or if you have difficulties in the speaking section start to talk and think in English, there is no

better way of speaking. If you think in English you will be able to express yourself properly.

Step 4: Start reading newspapers, journals , articles and you should be well informed about the

current issues for the speaking and writing topics.

How to Improve Your Listening Skill

Listening is a paper many candidates underestimate or fail to prepare for correctly. Contrary to

what you may sometimes read, there are very specific skills needed to improve your listening.

Whatever happens, it is not a case of practice, practice, practice. Rather you need to focus yourpractice as you would for any other paper.

Here is a summary of a few of my simpler suggestions on what you should think about when you

    are practicing:

    1. Read before you listen - predict the answer, think grammar

    2. Read as you listen - focus on the whole question, not just key words3. Look at 2 questions at once - often they come one after the other very quickly

    4. Don't leave the writing to the end - you're not going to remember the detail

    5. Practice your shorthand - you need to write quickly as you listen, you get time at the end for

writing correctly6. Check your spelling - wrong spelling, no mark

    7. Don't write the answer too quickly - often the speaker corrects himself and you need the

second answer, not the 1st answer8. Don't leave any blank answers9. Listen for repeated information - sometimes the answer word is repeated or reformulated

    10. Look for clues in the question - other questions or the layout of the table can often help

The big one here is number 2. This is what causes a huge amount of errors in the exam: simply

focusing on keywords as opposed to the whole question. There is a definite skill to this:

My suggestion is that each listening test you do at least 3 times:

    1. Test yourself

    2. Read the transcript as you listen - seeing where the answers come3. Retest yourself a week or so later.

The important stage here is stage 2 - that is where you are going to learn. You will little ornothing just by doing test after test. Aim for quality not quantity if you want to improve.

    IELTS Study Hints

The following study hints will help you in the weeks leading up to the IELTS.

Become familiar with the test as early as possible. The skills being tested in the IELTS take aperiod of time to build up. Cramming is not an effective study technique for IELTS.

Use your study time efficiently. Study when you are fresh and, after you have planned atimetable, make sure that you keep to it. Set goals and ensure that you have adequate breaks. In

the IELTS test, each of the four Band Modules Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking carries the same weight. Study each skill carefully and spend more time on the skills in which youfeel you are weak.

Be aware of the exact procedure for the test. Be very clear onthe order of each section, its length and the specific questiontypes. There are many resources available to help youpractice these skills.

Having a study partner or a study group is an excellent idea.Other students may raise issues that you may not haveconsidered.

Seek help from teachers, friends and native Englishspeakers.

Countdown to the testDays before the testThis is not a time for intensive study. It is a time to review skills andyour test technique. It is important to exercise, eat, rest and sleep wellduring the week in which you will take the test. Leave nothing to chance. If you do not know how to get to the testcentre, try going there at a similar time one or two weeks before thereal test. The night before the testYou must have a good dinner and go to bed at your normal time not too early and not too late, as you do not want to disrupt your sleep pattern if possible.

Have everything ready that you need to take with you to the test so you can simply pick it up in the

morning, for example, the test registration form, passport, test number, pens, pencils, erasers, etc. A penthat runs dry or a pencil that breaks can take several minutes to replace. Check before the exam exactlywhat articles you need. Set your alarm clock the night before or arrange a wake-up call.On the morning of the testEat a good breakfast. You will have several hours of concentration ahead of you and you will need foodand drink in the morning. You may even want to bring more food or a snack with you, especially if yourspeaking test is at a later time that day. You cannot, however, take food or drink into the exam room. Ifpossible, wear a watch in case you cannot see the clock in the exam room. It is essential that you keeptrack of time

    http://book4fun.blogspot.com/2010/06/ielts-study-hints.htmlhttp://book4fun.blogspot.com/2010/06/ielts-study-hints.htmlhttp://www.askynz.com/images/auck_pic_auck_m14.jpghttp://book4fun.blogspot.com/2010/06/ielts-study-hints.html

Give yourself plenty of time to get to the test centre. You will be required to complete a registration formand to show your passport before you enter the examination room so you must arrive at the timespecified by your test centre. If you are early, you could go for a walk. If you are late, you will not beallowed to enter. Avoid the added tension of having to rush. During the testMost students at the test will feel nervous. This is quite normal. In fact, it can actually be quite helpful interms of motivation. It may make you alert and help you to focus. The aim is for you to try to perform atyour optimum level. In contrast, high levels of anxiety can affect a student's performance. However, much of this anxiety canbe overcome by good preparation, familiarity with test details and a positive attitude. The examination room should be suitable for testing, that is, the lighting, ventilation and temperatureshould be appropriate. If you are uncomfortable because of any of these factors or if there is some otherproblem, such as not being able to hear the recording of the Listening Module, make sure you ask theperson in charge to do something about it. For example, you may ask to change seats. Examination techniqueBy using good examination technique you could help to improve your overall score for the IELTS test. Remember that every section is marked independently. Do not jeopardise your performance in onesection just because you believe that you have done badly in another. Do not underestimate or try topredict your outcome. You may, in fact, have done better than you imagined.Focus on what you know rather than on what you don't know while you are doing the test. Ensure that you adhere to the times suggested as they usually correspond to the number of marks givenfor a particular question. In the Listening and Reading Modules, it is a good idea to write down an answer, even if you are not sureof it, before moving on to the next question. Many students intend to return to the answers they haveomitted at the end of the test but do not have enough time to do so. Furthermore, by writing your bestanswer at the actual time of reading the question, you save the time you need to spend again on re-reading the question and re-acquainting yourself with the subject matter. If you are not confident aboutyour answer, mark it in some way and return to it at the end. Do not leave any answers blank. You are not penalised for incorrect answers, so guess wisely.

    Speaking tips

Speaking is a weakness of analytic learners (who learn English from books and tapes).

Moreover, in countries where English is not a first language, improving your speaking in English

is really difficult. Therefore, I dont have much experience in practicing speaking. Here are sometips that I got from my teachers and some suggestions that I think they might be helpful for you.

Pronunciation is the most important feature in speaking. If you speak correctly, academically andinterestingly, but no one understands what you are talking about, you certainly lose your points.

One of my teachers, who is fluent in 5 languages, shares his experience that pronunciation is the

key of learning a language. It might be true since native English speakers can pronounce a

unfamiliar word correctly but dont know how to spell it. Because English is a combination ofmany languages, there are no totally general rules for pronunciation. As a result, you mustremember everything.

So how to pronounce the words correctly?

    - Firstly, listen and learn what native English speaker said. As I mentioned, listening can help

you in speaking. You can correct yourself in basic words if you listen a lot. Moreover, listening

  • 7/29/2019 Cah Hoc Ielts

    20/21

can also help you to learn how to stress important words, how to speak naturally and even how to

    organize your speech.

    - Secondly, if you learn a new word, you must know how to pronounce it first. Typically, when

people want to learn new words, they revise these words again and again, and write it down so

many times. But now, to improve your speaking and listening, you must hear electronicdictionary pronouncing and repeat after it again and again.

    - Thirdly, make sentences with new vocabulary. Everybody might know how to pronounce

words correctly, but when they combine them all together, they cannot pronounce correctly

anymore, or even if they do, their sentence may sound unnatural. The reason is they lack ofintonation. Listening might solve this problem.

    - Fourthly, practice pronunciation every week (3-4 times a week) by reading out loud a shortpassage. At first, you practice to pronounce all the words in that passage correctly. Then read the

whole passage slowly and correctly (pay attention to ending sound).

Afterward, increase reading speed in each sentence (read here means you must speak out thewords, not read in your mind). If you speak quickly but start to pronounce wrongly, that means

you reach your limit, dont speak faster than that. And finally, you read the whole passage againat normal speed, or may be a bit faster than normal a little bit, but you MUST include intonation.

To find material for practicing this exercise, you can visit this website:http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com. There are hundreds of short news and audio files spoken

by a native speaker. I guarantee if you practice this kind of exercise gradually, you pronunciation

will improve a lot. (Note: this is the exercise of my teacher, who speaks 5 languages, as I

    mentioned before)

Now, to prepare for IELTS Speaking test, you should practice some more exercises:

    - Pick a topic and stand in front of mirror to practice speaking test. You should go through all

three parts of the real speaking test. Standing in front of mirror will help you improve your bodylanguage and also your pronunciation. You might find it strange that mirror can correct your

pronunciation. In fact, there are some vowels and consonants that you cant pronounce correctlyif you dont know how to do that (not just simply remember the pronunciation).

    - Try to speak naturally. You are advised to speak fast with intonation (the previous reading

exercise will certainly help you). You should learn and apply some verb phrases, idioms and

slang expressions. This is not the key part of speaking test, but it is better if you know, not onlyfor your test but also for you speaking skill. If you want to get 7.0, you must master

    pronunciation, accuracy and intonation.

Important tip #1When you practice in speaking, you must pay attention to the ending sound. But when you take

the real test, dont do that, because it will affect your fluency. In the real test, it is the time you

    http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/
  • 7/29/2019 Cah Hoc Ielts

    21/21

show examiner what you got, not the time you can show them how good you can correct

yourself. Using experience you gained from practicing to prove your speaking skill.

Important tip #2Another wonderful way to practice speaking is to speak English in your dream. If you never do

that, you do it now. I have already spoken English in my dreams even before my teacher adviceme to do so. I just watch cartoons in English, films in English and listen to songs in English. As a

result, I naturally dream in English. Actually, I can control my dreams, lol, it is very interesting, try to do that. By doing that, I can think quickly in my mind, but I still have problems when

speaking my ideas out. So, you must do 2 previous exercises in order to improve speaking.

Every month, high achievers from around the world post on your blog excellent tips on how to tame the

English language and improve the four skills. To avoid re-inventing the wheel, I have decided to focus on

common sense advice on less technical, but still potentially dangerous details.1. Sleep very well the night preceding the test; before going to bed, avoid watching TV, playing video

games or doing other activities that may put undue strain on your eyes. And no alcohol!

    2. On the day of the test, get up early enoughyou want to make sure you are thoroughly awake by thetime the test starts. Have a good breakfast, drink sufficient water, and dont forget to use the restroom3. When deciding what time to leave the house, take weather conditions and traffic into account; I suggest

you have a friend or family member give you a ride, to avoid being pulled over for reckless IELTS-fever

    driving.

    4. If possible, try to take the test at the same time with a friend or classmate; you can help each other out a

lot by studying together, sharing materials and comparing teachers corrections on your homework.5. During the last 20 minutes of waiting in the test room, anxiety may take over and fill your head with

terrifying scenarios. You may feel scared, paralyzed, drawing a blank. This is the time to look around the

room, make eye contact with your friend and smile. He or she probably needs this even more than you do.

    6. While the recording is playing, look in your paper, and occasionally rest your eyes on the floor or

anything inanimate. DONT look at other people. Their reactions to the listening will distract you and, even worse, the proctors may suspect you are trying to cheat.

    7. For the interview, dress professionally, but dont overdo it; try to avoid new, very tight, oruncomfortable clothes or shoes. When giving your 2-minute answer, make sure you have an interesting

story to tell, but dont worry if the examiner seems a bit cold or unfriendly; they have instructions to stayneutral and keep facial expressions to a minimum.
