    Vibration- and shock-proofmaintenance-free

The vibration-proof properties ofCAGE CLAMP connections weretested and verified in a vibration test toIEC/EN 60068-2-6. In this test, a vari-able frequency band up to 2000Hz,at different accelerations up to 20 Gand different amplitudes up to 20mm,was passed in three axes. Extremelydemanding test requirements for electri-cal installations in rolling stock (IEC/EN 61373) are prescribed by railwayauthorities or the testing agencies formarine approvals, such as GL, LR andDNV. These rigorous tests were alsopassed.

In the impact test to IEC/EN 60068-2-27 or for railway applications toIEC/EN 61373, the test samples wereexposed to instant shock stresses, insteadof permanent vibrations. Stresses up to100G on the x, y, and z-axis were passedwithout any problems.

The maintenance-free feature resultsfrom the excellent long term consistencyof the electrical and mechanical proper-ties of the clamping connection moreaccurately, the clamping point. The vol-tage drop test serves in the evaluation ofthe clamping point quality under stressessuch as vibrations, temperature changesand corrosive influences, in order to ve-rify the gastightness of the contact point. The CAGE CLAMP technology has

proven its long term consistency inlaboratory tests by international appro-val authorities as well as in worldwideapplications. The result is a maintenance-free guarantee, reducing service costsand increasing the availability andreliability of installations and devices.

Material and labour costs can alsobe reduced, when the conductors areused without prior preparation, i.e.crimping of ferrules or pin terminals. The front-entry wiring provides theideal prerequisite. Well respectedusers expressly indicate this fact intheir specifications.

Faster commissioning and elimina-tion of service costs due to themaintenance-free condition provideadditional savings

A number of VDE directives prescribeor recommend, respectively, that onlyone conductor should or must beconnected per clamping point, e.g.,DIN VDE 0611 Part 4, 02.91, section3.1.9. WAGO complies with thissafety requirement expressed in thecorresponding directives.

The following technical andeconomical benefits are thus

    realised for the user:

Each conductor is clamped indepen-dently from others

Any wire size combination per poten-tial can be safely connected

Where re-wiring is required, only theconductor to be changed is removedfrom the clamping point, all otherconductors remain safely clamped

The arrangement of more than twoclamping points on one current barpermits the multiplication of poten-tials, without jumpers or additionalterminal blocks

CAGE CLAMP and CAGE CLAMPSconnections clamp CU conductorsfrom 0.08mm2 to 35 mm2 (95mm2), orfrom 0.25mm2 to 25 mm2, respectively.Splice protection is not requiredbutcan be used.

The conductor is pressed against thecurrent bar in the predefined contactarea, without damaging it. The clam-ping force automatically adjusts to thewire size. Possible conductor deforma-tion is balanced, an accidental loose-ning is safely prevented.

    Gastight clamping pointmeasurable contact quality

The long term consistency of the lowcontact resistance of CAGE CLAMPand CAGE CLAMPS connectionsis the result of the gastightness atthe clamping points. The connectedconductor is pressed against the currentbar (electrolyte copper with lead-freeblock tin surface coating) within thedefined contact zone, by the springclamp (acid and saltwater proof CrNispring steel). The conductor is embed-ded into the soft tin layer at a highspecific contact pressure and henceimmune against corrosive creeping.

    The contact pressure

has the same level in CAGE CLAMPas in screw terminals.

The temperature-rise test is re-quired for examination of the clampingpoint, including the surrounding insula-

ting enclosure, at rated current, overcur-rent and short -circuit current levels.

The quality of a clamping pointcan best be evaluated, using thefollowing test procedures:

The voltage drop test is used toevaluate the quality of the clampingpoint under stresses such as vibration,

    temperature changes and industrialatmospheres.

    High current -carryingcapacity

The short time withstand capacityis defined in standards such as IEC/EN60947-7-1 for through rail-mountedterminal blocks, as a current-carry-ing capacity of 120 A per mm2nominal diameter for the duration of1 second. In the case of a 95mm2high-current terminal block of theWAGO Series 285, this translates to11,440A!

Ground (earth) conductor terminal blocksto be tested are submitted to 120 A permm2 for 3x one second. The passcriterion for the test is the voltage drop(limit value and constancy).CAGE CLAMP and CAGE CLAMPSconnections pass this test without damageand impairment of the functionalities.

    11

Unrealistic test of a CAGE CLAMP rail-mounted terminal block, 4mm2: Increaseof current without time limit. In such an extreme test fuse devices wouldhave interrupted the current, the terminal block is undamaged.

As inventors and pioneers for springclamp terminals, WAGO had an ideain 1951, when founding the company:to clamp electrical conductors viaspring force, instead of a screw mecha-nism. Today, more than 50 years later,WAGO is the globally recognizedleader in spring clamp technology.

WAGO products with CAGE CLAMPconnecting technologies have proventhemselves since their market intro-duction in 1977 in all applicationconditions in electrical and electronicengineering, having obtained allimportant international approvals.
