    The Cagayan Valley

    Cagayan Valley has five provinces and three

    cities. The most dominant trait of the region is

    the Cagayan River, the largest waterway in thePhilippines. Cagayan Valley is considered as an

    adventurer's paradise, with its intricate cave

    systems, rugged mountain peaks, white water

    rapids and beautiful beaches.

    It is composed of five provinces:

    Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya,and Quirino. It has four cities: industrialcenter Cauayan City, its regional center

    Tuguegarao, its investment hub Ilagan Cityand its Premier City Santiago City. SantiagoCity is also the Queen City of North Luzon.

    Economy and Geography

    The Cagayan Valley Region II is defined by theCagayan River. The Province of Cagayan occupies thelower course of the river and the northeast corner of theisland of Luzon (with a few offshore islets). Cagayan's

    area is 9,003 km.

    Cagayan has much to offer visitors: beaches,swimming, snorkeling, skin-diving, fishing in the river

    and the sea, hiking in primeval forest, mountain-climbing, archaeological sites, the remarkable collectionof the provincial museum, the Callao Caves, and manyfine churches. Even here there are fortifications built to

    protect the inhabitants from raids by the Mara.

    Quirino

    Quirino Province is known for itsnatural sites, wildlife and adventure. Natural

    sites include the Bisangal Waterfalls, VictoriaFalls, the Nagbukel and Aglipay Caves andNagtipunan virgin rainforest. Governor

    Rapids is an ideal spot for white waterrafting, swimming and fishing.

    Nueva Vizcaya

    Nueva Vizcaya is a mountainous province hometo the Mt. Pulog National Park where the country'ssecond highest mountain, Mt. Pulog (3,000 meters), islocated. World War 2 memorials include the Dalton Pass

    and the Kirang Pass. Old Spanish Churches include St.Dominic Cathedral and Dupax del Sur Church.Adventure and eco-tourism sites include the Lion-Alayan Cave and the Kayapa town.

    Isabela

    Isabela Province is best known forits uncharted forest wilderness, includingthe Northern Sierra National Park. ThePalanan Rainforest is one of the world's

    largest remaining low altitude rainforest.Isabela also has the Magat Hydro ElectricPower Plant, East Asia's largest damproject. Other popular sites include

    Spanish churches in Tumauini, Alicia andGamu, and the Aguinaldo Shrine inPalanan, built to commemorate the spotwhere General Emilio Aguinaldo wascaptured by American Forces in 1901.

    Cagayan

    Cagayan Province is best known for

    the seven-chambered Callao Caves.Adventurers come to Cagayan for gamefishing, mountain trekking, river trips andsurfing. Popular sites include Palaui's Spanish

    built Cape Engano Lighthouse, the MagapitSuspension Bridge, St. Peter's Cathedral andthe Miraculous Lady of Piat, a four centuries-old image of the Virgin Mary, brought byDominican Friars from Macao in 1604. The

    mouth of the Cagayan River is located inAparri. The Cagayan River is the longest andwidest in the nation, and is home to the'lurung' fish which travels upstream to breed

    during the wet season.

    Batanes

    Batanes is an island group in themost northern and isolated province in thePhilippines. The unpredictability of theweather makes traveling to Batanes difficult,thus preserving its unspoiled beauty. Among

    the natural wonders of this place includesendangered fauna, volcanic peaks, caves, seacliffs and sandy beaches. Unique wildlifeincludes the tatus (coconut crab) and

    migratory birds from China. Structures withSpanish influence remain here such as theSan Jose and San Carlos Borromeo Churches.Adventure seekers find Batanes great forsurfing, trekking and spelunking.

    The island-province of

    Batanes is the smallest province in the

    Philippines with a land area of 230square kilometers and was created bya series of volcanic activities andother geologic forces when Mt. Iraya

    erupted around 325 B.C. It is boundedon the north by the Bashi Channel, onthe east by the Pacific Ocean, on thewest by the China Sea and on thesouth by the Balintang Channel.

    Basco, its capital town is about 280kilometers north of Aparri, Cagayanor some 860 kilometers north ofManila and about 190 kilometers

    south of Taiwan.
