There is no question that we are in a recession and mostorganizations, large and small, are doing everything nec-essary in order to survive. I’m encouraged and delightedto hear positive reports about Canadian expositions thatare holding strong and even growing. I’m also proud tosay that CAEM can count itself among one of thesegrowing organizations.

Strength In NumbersWe were over 325 strong at our Annual Holiday Lunch-eon back in December. In January we congregated together at one of our best ever attended EducationalKeynote Address and Luncheon events with over 100people. And our first annual Awards Gala brought over180 of us together again in February. I applaud everyonewho participated. We need to continue to keep up themomentum. At present, we are about to break the 300mark in our membership – and we haven’t even rolledout our strongest marketing efforts yet. Over the winterwe developed a database of 500 Canadian non-membershow managers and we are now marketing the Confer-ence and trial membership package to them. The 2009Conference line-up looks very positive and I am proud toshare with you that we have new sponsors already onboard for Deerhurst.

Now It’s Your TurnCAEM has listened to your suggestions and made someradical changes to the pricing and structure of the Confer-ence and our association events. February 19 proved to be an absolutely

exhilarating evening and yet another milestone

for CAEM. It is the first time that we have

had an opportunity to pay tribute to the finest

members among us in a standalone event.

And the response was phenomenal. While

we were originally anticipating about 100

registrants, the final tally came in at 180.

It is very gratifying to have such a reception

pay tribute to our Award Winners. The Gala

was a magnificent success on all fronts.

Given this year’s turnout, we are pleased to

announce that it is destined to be an ongoing

event. Many happy returns to all. And for those

of you who were unable to attend, you really

missed out on a spectacular performance.

Celebrating The Stars Of The ShowA magical time was had by everyone. We extend our

genuine appreciation to the Metro Toronto Convention

Centre for being our gracious host venue sponsor and

providing a perfectly congenial environment for our

inaugural event. The chef was truly inspired and provided

a delectable array of tasteful delights. Noah Cappe, our

Emcee, had a wonderful sense of humour that put

everyone in a relaxed and celebratory mood. And

Michael Lecour, our awards sponsor, kept the show

moving forward at an interesting pace.

A Stellar IdeaKudos are in order for Anita Schachter, Chair of the

Awards Task Force. Not just for conceiving the initial idea

but for applying the necessary elbow grease to see the

idea through to fruition. As the saying goes, success

breeds success. Here’s how she recounts the story.

“Two years ago, during my tenure as chair of the

Nominating Committee, Jim Mahon, Arlene Campbell,

Don Hobson, Paul Urben and I sat in the coffee shop at

the Stage West Hotel and talked about the importance of

volunteers to our association. That day a seed was planted…

that of elevating the status of the recognition we

bestowed on our valuable volunteers, of recognizing our

members who challenge themselves to take leadership

roles on committees, of spending hours working on their

accreditation, of bettering themselves for the good of our

industry. We wanted to make them all feel like VIPs for at

least one special night. The result of the seed that was

planted that day is being presented to you tonight.”

The Stars Come Out At NightWhile CAEM President Stephen Dempsey was unable to attend

the proceedings, he did make a point of extending his congratu-

latory message: “Dear fellow CAEM members and guests, you

are experiencing history in the making tonight. Embrace it and

enjoy it. Congratulations to Sonia Moffatt, Isabella Wai, Deborah

Dugan and Carol Bell-LeNoury. I tip my cap to you all. Not only

for the awards you deservedly earned, but for everything you’ve

done for CAEM and the exposition industry as a whole. I would

also like to personally thank Anita Schachter for spearheading

this new initiative. A special thanks is also in order to Serge

Micheli and the CAEM staff for orchestrating this event profes-

sionally and seamlessly as usual.”

Let The Drum Rolls BeginOn behalf of the Nominating Committee, Naomi Wagschal, CEM,

took the stage to clearly explain how the nominating process

works and outline the stringent requirements necessary to

become an award recipient. “The Member of the Year Award is

presented to a member who, through contributions of time and

talent, has made an outstanding and special contribution to the

association and the Canadian exposition industry during the past

year. Members of the Hall of Fame are leaders who have

achieved prominence for the honour they bring to the exposition

industry and to CAEM.”

We are proud to recognize four unique individuals who have

proven to be true pillars of our association. So without further

ado, let’s all give the Award Winners the glory they deserve with

a welcoming round of applause.

Without question, Sonia has been a constant, reliable and valuable volunteer to CAEM. She is always ready to contribute her time and exceptional talent. Not only does she roll up her sleeves and get involved with a variety of projects and programs, but she is also an excellent mentor to new members.

Introduction By Elizabeth McCullough, C.D.E.(1996 – 1998 CAEM President)There is a reason why some people rise to the top and stay there. As a CAEM member for twenty years, Sonia has been both an outstanding volunteer and industry leader. She is a senior manager, coping with the constant demands and challenges of employees, suppliers and show managers.

So what has Sonia done for each and every one of us over the past twelve months? She was a member of the 2007 / 2008 Conference Committee as well as Co-Chair of the Conference Promotions Sub-Committee. Over the same period, she also served on the Membership Committee. That’s already three committees which is more than most of us take on. She is also a member of the Awards Task Force – the group that brought us this fantastic evening – and is an active member of the current Conference Promotions Sub-Committee.

On top of all this, she continues to work to improve her knowledge and skills. Earlier this evening she was recognized for receiving her CEM designation. She is a consummate professional, the ultimate dedicated volunteer and someone I am proud to call my friend.

Sonia’s Acceptance MessageWhen I joined the Awards Night Task Force, I never expected that I would be throwing a party for myself. I have always felt that I have received much more from CAEM than I have ever given. I want to thank Freeman for all their support and encouragement – they have always been great advocates of CAEM. I also want to thank the other members who worked on committees with me. I’ve met so many great people who have taught me so much. I’m very fortunate to have had the opportunity to become close personal friends with these individuals. It’s really quite amazing. I don’t think many other associations even come near to what CAEM has to offer in this regard. Thank you CAEM and the Nominating Committee. I am truly honoured and thrilled to receive this award.

Isabella has contributed a significant amount of time to CAEM and has gained tremendous respect from association members for her efforts. Among her many accomplishments, she successfully launched the first Webinar for CAEM and was instrumental in achieving record-breaking attendance levels at educational sessions.

Introduction By Rena Menzies(2005 Hall of Fame Award Recipient)Isabella wholeheartedly believes in CAEM and its purpose. Since joining CAEM in 2001, she has volunteered many hours and achieved great results for us. Last year was no exception. She participated in many capacities including: panelist in one of the 2008 Conference education sessions; Co-Chair of the Education Committee; Committee Member of the Canadian Event Audit Advisory Council; and Board Representative for the National Meetings Industry Day. If that isn’t enough, she is currently serving as the First Vice Chairman of the Board as well as a Co-Chair for this year’s Conference in Deerhurst.

Isabella is very fortunate to enjoy the support of her employer, the Ontario Hospital Association, who has witnessed her professional development through CAEM involvement. They take great pride in her accomplishments and are impressed by her dedication. Rightly so.

Isabella’s Acceptance MessageTo start, I have to thank my boss and friend, Warren DiClemente. When I initially entered this industry he suggested that I join CAEM, take the courses to build my knowledge and join the committees. I did exactly that and I’ve never looked back.

As a first-time attendee at the 2001 Conference, I received a warm welcome by Anita Schachter who was the CAEM President at the time. Anita, you should know what an extraordinary first impression and impact your kindness made on me, making me want to be a part of the CAEM family. You will always be my role model. In 2007, when I was nominated as a Board Member, I was proud to have the privilege of working with you and a group of dedicated, enthusiastic, passionate and professional industry peers. We all share the same vision, we all want to provide better services for our members and we all want our industry to flourish.

The Member of the Year award is a gift and an honour that I will treasure forever. I love being involved in CAEM, and I am looking forward to many more years to come. Thank you very much.

Deborah has dedicated a tremendous amount of her time and talent to the association over the years. In particular, she was a key player in bringing the CEM courses to Canada. Her efforts in helping to move the CAEM office were commendable to say the least. And she is a constant proponent of CAEM as she continues to sponsor new members.

Introduction By Jim Mahon, C.D.E., CEM(2000 Hall of Fame Award Recipient)For close to fifty years, I have been privileged to present a great number of awards and many of them were on behalf of CAEM. This particular presentation is truly a great honour for me because I have known and worked with Deborah for many years and I genuinely respect her values.

When it comes to Boards and Committees, there are those that talk and those that do. Deborah is definitely a doer. Within the past decade she has actively served as a Board Member as well as Co-Chair of the Conference Committee, the CEM courses and the Education Committee. She is a shining example of what helps make an association like CAEM great. She leads by example with her ongoing personal commitment, positive attitude, hard work, professionalism, involvement and total dedication. Deborah is a credit to our industry and to CAEM.

Deborah’s Acceptance MessageWhat an honour it is to be included with the prestigious Hall of Fame group. Over my thirty-year career, being a part of CAEM has been the icing on the cake for me.

While I have been involved in several committees to further the cause of the association, it is the wonderful friends I’ve made along the way that has really made the volunteer experience rewarding. I can’t begin to thank all the people that I know and admire at CAEM, but I do have to extend a special thanks to all my Co-Chairs over the years.

As a show manager turned supplier I have a great respect for both sides of the business. Carol has been a remarkable advocate and ambassador of CAEM. She is always eager to see the association grow and develop and has tirelessly volunteered both her time and expertise to spread the CAEM message at every possible opportunity.

Introduction By Donna Wood(2004 Hall of Fame Award Recipient)“Maven” is the word that comes to mind to best describe Carol. She fits the definition perfectly – someone who is vibrantly skilled and dazzles in any field. As a CAEM member for over twenty-four years, she has served on multiple committees, has been on the Board for ten years and has served as our President back in 1994 – 1996.

But we didn’t come here to praise accomplishments. We came to honour the person behind the accomplishments. And I know something about the person because we shared parallel paths and often worked together over the past twenty years. Carol is honest and says what needs to be said. She has remarkable resolve and integrity. She is a real trail-blazer and a leader. And, as a true maven, she does everything with style and flair.

For the past twenty-four years CAEM has been as much a part of my life as producing shows themselves and for the relationships and opportunities I have encountered, I am indeed grateful. As I look around the room, I won’t name lists of people I have worked with because there are five or six people at every table whom I have had the privilege to cross paths with at one time or another. I am lucky to have worked with so many of you.

The benefits of actively participating in the association are numerous both personally and professionally. I would encourage everyone to either continue to work for the cause or start working to guide and direct our industry to betterment. You won’t regret it for a minute.

I am indeed honoured to be named among the best of our industry. It is a privilege to be regarded with such esteem. Thank you to everyone for bestowing this honour upon me.

statement that we should all heed. “I would like to say

that every volunteer in CAEM is greatly appreciated. This

association could not be the vibrant and high-achieving

group that it is without all of you. Currently there are

fifty-three members who are each participating on one or

more committees. This solid core of commitment at the

grassroots level of CAEM keeps the association strong

and enables us to make real progress in bringing value

to the entire membership. I would like to personally

CCAB RELEASES CIRCULATION DATA FORCANADA’S THREE LARGESTNEWSPAPERSOn March 24 the Canadian Circulations Audit Board(CCAB), the Canadian divisionof BPA Worldwide, released theresults of comprehensive annualcirculation audits for 43 dailynewspaper members includingthree of the nation’s largestnewspaper publishing groups:Sun Media, Torstar Corporationand Transcontinental Media.This is the first year that thethree publishing powerhouseshave had their circulation auditsconducted by CCAB/BPA undernew standards developed underthe auspices of the CanadianNewspaper Advisory Board. According to Tim Peel, Vice President of CCAB/BPAWorldwide, “This mandate wasgiven to us by the advertisersand publishers of the CanadianNewspaper Advisory Board inearly 2008 because it wouldallow media buyers to makemore informed decisions whenconsidering these publicationsfor their advertising investments.”

NEW CEAAC GUIDELINESFOR THE CANADIAN MARKETPLACEThe Canadian Event Audit Advisory Council (CEAAC) announced on March 6 thatthey have developed auditingstandards for expositions andevents in Canada and haveapproved their first recognizedauditing organization, BPAWorldwide. CEAAC Chair CarolBell-LeNoury stated: “We werevery conscious of the standardsthat had been adopted in theUnited States by IAEE and ofthe European standardsadopted by UFI, as we wantedto ensure that the Canadianstandards were compatible on aglobal basis with those of theother groups, while at the sametime ensuring that Canadian

nuances were acknowledgedand recognized. The CanadianEvent Audit Standards havebeen officially endorsed byCAEM at its Board meeting onJanuary 25.

TORONTO SPORTSMEN’SSHOW ANNOUNCES NEWVENUE FOR 2010The Toronto Sportsmen’s Show,Canada’s largest outdoor show,announced it is moving to theMetro Toronto ConventionCentre following 63 successfulyears at Exhibition Place. The2010 show will run from March17-21.

MTCC HONOURED BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSIONER OF ONTARIOOn March 26 Gord Miller, theEnvironmental Commissioner ofOntario, awarded the MetroToronto Convention Centre the2008 ECO Recognition Awardfor its Zero Waste Events program. The MTCC won theaward over 13 other nominatedorganizations. “Talking aboutzero waste is cheap and easy,but putting it into practice is another matter,” said Miller. “Iam impressed that the MetroToronto Convention Centre hasrisen to the challenge andachieved something remarkable.”

In MemoriamStan passed away on April 26, 2009 at Sunnybrook Hospital after a lengthy andcourageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Adrianna and his darlinglittle daughter, Karicia-Mia.

Stan was born, September 8, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto. He wasschooled locally and graduated from George Harvey Collegiate.

Stan began his career in Customs Brokerage with International Customs BrokersLimited in 1972. He moved to Mendelssohn-Commercial in 1982, went on toStarber International in 1991. His entire career was spent in sales up to 1995,when he joined Commerce Customs Brokers and created along with his partners,Pat D’Alessandro and Zaza Vili, the Trade Show Brokerage services in conjunctionwith regular Customs clearance work.

In 2006, Stan, Pat and Zaza ventured out on their own and opened The Com-merce Trade Show Logistics Group which offers Customs and Transportation serv-ices to the Trade Show, Conventions, Meetings and Special Events Industries.

Stan was an avid golfer. He was a member of Caledon Woods Golf Club inBolton and could be seen every Saturday, Sunday and Holidays teeing off with hisgroup in the early morning.

Stan also loved his vehicles. His yellow 2000 Corvette was easily recognized byhis license plate “Udloose”.

Stan was calm, cool and collected. Always graceful under fire, he made time forand had a smile for everyone he met. He will be missed by his family, his friendsand The Commerce group.
