Welcome to Cadogan Hall’s 12th Zurich International Orchestra Series, in association with IMG Artists.

Our series is regarded as the largest and most comprehensive series of international orchestras in the country and this year we’re delighted to welcome ten of the world’s most distinguished orchestras, along with outstanding conductors and soloists.

New orchestras making their series debut this season are from all corners of the world: the Symphony Orchestra of India, gives two concerts in February, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra joins us in April and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra are here in May. We are delighted to welcome for the first time an acclaimed Russian orchestra, from Siberia, for the final concert in the series.

Our soloists are again an exceptional list: pianists include Barry Douglas and Angela Hewitt, violinists include Jennifer Pike, Marat Bisengaliev and Alexander Sitkovetsky, along with young cello sensation Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who performs with Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

Cadogan Hall is proud that this year’s series opening concert will be the Russian State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vasily Petrenko, recently announced as Music Director of Cadogan Hall's resident orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic.

Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular ballet suite begins the concert and contains some of his most memorable music. To follow, expect glistening beauty and virtuoso fireworks as Barry Douglas takes centre stage for Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto.

To end the evening’s programme Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is a richly scored, full-blooded masterpiece. The four movements move from darkness and doubt through a famously beautiful slow movement, to a joyous outburst of celebration in the finale.

Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra return to Cadogan Hall with three concerts in the 2018-19 season that pay tribute to two giant figures in the history of the Mariinsky Theatre, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa. Petipa, whose 200th anniversary is being celebrated throughout the ballet world in 2018, worked at the Mariinsky Theatre for over half a century, including more than 30 years as First Ballet Master and Principal Choreographer of the company. Petipa's numerous full length works and definitive revivals remain corner stones of the ballet repertory today, including Don Quixote, La bayadère, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty which features in this Mariinsky concert, was comissioned by the Mariinsky Theatre which gave its world premiere in St Petersburg in 1890.

Tchaikovsky's close association with the Mariinsky Theatre included numerous opera and ballet commissions as well as symphonic performances. He conducted the Imperial Orchestra (forerunner of today's Mariinsky Orchestra) on many occasions, including, in 1888, in the world premiere of his Fifth Symphony.

This concert celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Mariinsky Theatre Trust (UK).

In these two concerts the Mariinsky Orchestra under Artistic Director Valery Gergiev continues its cycle of late Tchaikovsky symphonies paired with music from Tchaikovsky’s best-loved ballets associated with Marius Petipa and St Petersburg. Swan Lake, despite an initial failure in Moscow, went on to become one of the most popular ballets in the world, thanks to the revival by Petipa and Ivanov at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky's last ballet, was commissioned by the Mariinsky as part of a double bill with his final opera, Iolanta. The Imperial Orchestra gave the world premiere of Tchaikovsky's powerful Sixth Symphony, Pathétique, in St Petersburg, conducted by the composer, just nine days before his untimely death.

The National Philharmonic of Russia was founded in 2003, uniting top orchestral musicians and gifted youth. Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Vladimir Spivakov has assembled some of Russia’s instrumental elite into an ensemble combining technical virtuosity with a rare capacity to become immersed in the music and draw the audience into that experience.

Russian-born violist, Konstantin Boyarsky, currently principal violist at Covent Garden, is considered one of the best young composers in the UK today. The orchestra performs his Concerto for Cello, Soprano and Symphony Orchestra, written in 2015.

Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra kicks off its 50th Anniversary European Tour in the UK led by renowned British Music Director Alexander Shelley. London audiences will recognize Maestro Shelley as the Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Since becoming Music

Director of the NAC Orchestra, Shelley has been credited with turning the orchestra ‘almost overnight... into one of the more audacious orchestras in North America,’ (Maclean’s).

The NAC Orchestra offers a dazzling programme: Serbian-Canadian Ana Sokolovic’s 2015 composition was inspired by music from imagined immigrant childhoods. Commissioned by the NAC, Golden slumbers kiss your eyes... sets folk songs and lullabies in seven languages, all brought vividly to life by Korean-Canadian countertenor David DQ Lee and London Voices. Next, brilliant Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki takes to the stage to perform Ravel’s dazzling, jazz-influenced Concerto in G - deftly navigating its textures and harmonies with his virtuosic technique. Audiences will quickly hear why BBC Music Magazine calls this Deutsche Grammophon recording artist ‘perhaps the most 'complete' pianist of his age’. The evening ends on a bucolic note with Brahms’ optimistic, forthright second symphony, ‘all rippling streams, blue sky, sunshine, and cool green shadows’.
