RMU (if applicable): 237 Mixed Use Management Goals: Maintain a variety of cover types and age class diversity which favor both game and non-game wildlife species. Soil and Topography: Rubicon and Croswell sands in upland areas. Tawas in wet areas. Most of the compartment is flat with the exception being above the creeks and river. Steep banks above the Manistee. The eastern side of the compartment contains many wet/poorly drained areas with old and inactive beaver activity causing areas of standing water. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: There is some private ownership in every section in this compartment; most of this is low development acreage with the exception of a subdivision along the Manistee River just west of the sw corner of section 9. The Pere Marquette Plan recommends acquisition of parcels in sections 7, 9, 16, 17, 18, 20 & 21. Unique, Natural Features: Manistee River, Apple creek and Blind creek. Many unnamed feeder streams. Some ridge areas along the river and between the creeks have spots that have never been cut. Wood turtle just ne of section 9; also to the w and sw. Great blue heron rookery within 1/2 mi s of section 19. Goshawk to the n. Bald eagle to the se. Red-shouldered hawk to the nw and ne. Ginseng to the e. Hill's thistle to the e and ne. Pine Barrens to the ne (Walton Marsh). Potential for bog bluegrass in swamp hardwoods. Potential for rare plants of cedar swamp: limestone oak fern, ram's head lady's-slipper and calypso orchid. Potential for ginseng in mesic slopes along Manistee River. Potential for great blue heron rookery, osprey, eagle, goshawk, red-shouldered hawk. Potential for wood turtle, massasauga, and Blanding's turtle. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: Prehistoric earthworks and Woodland Indian camp within compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: RMU states “High quality natural white pine is found along the river. Because white pine of this quality is not common it should be retained and encouraged.” Random camping sites along the Manistee River have resulted in various stages of erosion. Recommend closing some of these to vehicle access. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: To be done by Fisheries Division.

Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Priority wildlife species are deer, ruffed grouse, woodcock, aquatic furbearers, and waterfowl. There are 13 compartments in this RMU. Agreements called for a decrease of 200 acres in red pine/white pine and an increase of 200 acres in aspen. (L. Smith, 9/24/07) Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Sections 9 & 16 - 21, T24N-R10W, Wexford County Surface sediments consist of coarse-textured till and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 200 and 400 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Mississippian Michigan Formation, Marshall Sandstone and Coldwater Shale. The Michigan is quarried for gypsum in other areas of the State and the Marshall was used as a building stone. Gravel pits are located in the area and there should be some potential. This area is located seven miles southeast of the prolific Silurian Niagaran reef trend. Oil and gas has unknown potential in the Compartment, but lands are currently leased in Sections 8 & 9 and to the northwest. Vehicle Access: A forest road access plan is detailed on the compartment map. Identified are state and county roads as well as forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR. Also indicated are forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR that are proposed for abandonment. These roads were determined to be in excess of the access needs in the area, are a threat to the resources, or are a concern environmentally. Proposed new roads or roads recommended for substantial improvement are noted below: Survey Needs: None needed. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The Manistee River forms a heavily used canoeing, fishing corridor. Other recreational use consists of dispersed recreation (hunting, trapping, and fishing) along the feeder streams and back from the water courses. Campground at Baxter bridge provides car camping and walk in canoe camping. Parks division also maintains a river access site down river, across the road, on the north side of river. MCCCT trail runs through east part of compartment, in sections 9 & 16. Fire Protection: There are a variety of timber types within this compartment, with some of the areas being of concern for large fire growth. Access for equipment could be a concern, due to the Manistee River, and its tributaries. There are also private land within the compartment, which increases the urban interface concerns. Additional Compartment Information:

Cover Type details, Proposed Treatments, and Stand listings are listed in the attached reports: ♦ Cover Type by Age Class ♦ Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors ♦ Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors ♦ Stand Listing – Forested ♦ Stand Listing – Non Forested ♦ Special Conservation Area (SCA) Details

The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: ♦ Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types ♦ Proposed treatments ♦ Proposed road access system ♦ SCA – Special Conservation Areas
