The Cadet 1:1 Learning Initiative will be launched on Monday, December 19, with the distribution of laptop computers to students at Iowa Falls-Alden High School.

This initiative is a significant step in making the IF-A Vision for Technology and Learning come alive. Our vision describes our intent to transform student learning through the integration of technology so that all students are prepared for success in the 21st Century.

IF-A Vision for Technology and Learning

Seamlessly integrating technology to transform learning – any time, any place, any path, any pace.

Making our technology vision come alive will not be easy. It will require a thorough examination of not only what we teach, but also how we teach it. We will need to carefully consider how technology will be used to provide and support a challenging curriculum through engaging instructional practices (e.g.,

collaborative learning, problem-based learning, problem solving, critical thinking, constructivist classrooms, project-based learning, and so on). We will also need to empower students so that they take ownership of their learning and that learning can take place 24/7 – twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week.

The Cadet 1:1 Learning Initiative is designed to move us closer to our vision of seamlessly integrating technology to transform learning for success – any time, any place, any path, any pace. We are living in a time where dramatic changes are becoming the norm. Consequently, students in the 21st Century need to learn how to learn in order to successfully adapt to the explosion of new information and the constant shrinking of the boundaries that separate them from their fellow global citizens. Simply put…Our Yesterday Is Not Our Students’ Tomorrow. The world has changed, and we must also change.

Teaching students how to learn is one of our most critical responsibilities. It is not only about what we teach; it is about how we teach it. The challenge is to imagine doing things we have never been able to do in education, not simply improving upon what we are doing today. The real work for our educators is redesigning the assignments we give students to be more rigorous and motivating, and when possible, more global. It is a more complex task than adding

technology to our current set of assignments. With all of this in mind, the Iowa Falls Community

School District is launching the Cadet 1:1 Learning Initiative. It is hoped that students, parents and teachers share in the excitement of this initiative. The potential impact that this initiative will have on teaching and learning is enormous, and will help accelerate the transformation of the education provided to every student.

We recently have completed 1st quarter on October 26th. As we start 2nd quarter, we move toward the winter months and the holiday season. Since the beginning of the school year, teachers have been working hard on Tech Tuesday by brushing up on and learning new technology programs. They continue to practice Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) 3 out of the 4 Wednesdays each month during inservice. AIW is where learning is teacher-driven and teachers take a snapshot of what is going on in the classrooms. The process of IPI is geared toward student engagement. We have recently tied IPI in with AIW. We will currently collect data three times throughout the year. Our Science, Social Studies, Math, and English teachers have been receiving training in Concept Based Training.

Other activities going on at the high school include: FFA has been busy selling fruit and raffle tickets for a half a hog. They just recently returned from attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. International Club is busy with a Thanksgiving Food Drive. FCCLA has just completed a fundraiser with selling a goat to your best friend. Red Ribbon Week was recognized. The fall musical wrapped up in November. Math Club has been attending different contests. The Junior class attended Career Day at Ellsworth Community College. The Dance team held their annual Saturday breakfast. The cheerleaders have been practicing for Winter Sports. Winter Sports kick-off soon! We wish wrestling and the boys' and girls' basketball teams best of luck. Never a quiet moment at the high school!

On November 16th and 17th we had a normal

school day and the teachers received additional training from Apple instructors from 3:05-6:00 pm. Also on Nov. 17th at 12:30, we had an assembly bringing in the Power Team to deliver the message on “bullying” and drugs and alcohol.

Cadette CornerIf you are having current concerns with your student's

grades or with your student athlete, please consult the teacher and coach with those concerns right away.

Current issues that tend to arise at this time of the year and where we are asking for support from parents to help us, are attendance and open campus for seniors.

Our current policy states 3 and 6 period absences that include unexcused absences could lead your student not being able to opt out of semester tests, being dropped from the class, and being put into study hall. The current policy for seniors who are failing classes is they lose open campus till next grading period and are assigned to a study hall. Parents, please call in right away if your student is going to be absent.

We have started to make adjustments gearing up for the 1:1 laptop initiative rollout that is scheduled to occur on Dec. 19. A mandatory meeting that evening will be required for student and parent/guardian to attend. The laptops are to be an additional tool for teachers to help students, to be competitive not with just other Iowa students, but nationwide. Students need to realize these laptops are not just for playing games. We will continue to monitor and make sure these computers are being used for educational purposes. We are in the current process of setting up a student

Responsibility of Parents/Guardians

• Make every attempt possible to ensure your son/daughter attends school, as prescribed by law.

• Notify the Attendance Secretary by 9:30 am of the reason for absences concerning your son/daughter.

• Prearrange absences for all out-of-school appointments and verify time of return from all appointments if possible.

• Keep the administration informed of all extenuating circumstances that might have an impact on your son’s/daughter’s ability to attend school.

Six-Period Absence Policy

A student who is absent from a given class six periods in one semester, may be withdrawn from that class. Exemptions to this policy may include:

a. Hospitalization and long-term illness b. School-sponsored activities c. College visits, if arranged in advance through the

IFAHS guidance office

Three Unexcused Absences

Students who have 3 unexcused absences in a semester may be dropped from the class or classes. A hearing will be held within 3 school days in order to decide what is in the best interest of the student and staff. Possible restatement into the class or a permanent removal will be options.

Class Time/Tardies

Students must be in class a minimum of ¾ of the class time to be credited for a period of attendance.

Counseling ConnectionThere are three test dates left to take the ACT

exam. I would recommend that juniors take the April 14 test date at Ellsworth Community College.

These are the remaining test dates and the registration deadlines to avoid late fees:

Test Date — Registration Deadline to Avoid Late Fees February 11, 2012 — January 13, 2012April 14, 2012 — March 9, 2012June 9, 2012 — May 4, 2012

Seniors, you should try to apply to the college that you feel that you would like to attend by Christmas. This gives you some time to work with the housing department and the financial aid office. Many institutions have scholarship days for their incoming freshmen. You need to be accepted by the college to qualify for these competitions.

If you fill out a college application online, please let the guidance office know so we can send an official transcript to the institution for you.

There are a lot of things that have to be done before next fall and the sooner you get started, the easier it will be.

$$$ SCHOLARSHIPS $$$

Many students ask about scholarship opportunities. In this day of technology, many scholarship applications are not mailed to the school like they used to be several years ago. Most applications are online. Students can also do a massive scholarship search by using a few of the search engines listed below.

Seniors, please put this date on your calendar. We will be having our financial aid night on Tuesday, January 10, at 5:15 pm in the high school library. We will also be covering the local scholarship program at this time.

Graduation Requirements For All Students

All students need to keep track of their credits. Iowa Falls-Alden High School requires that you have 50 credits to graduate. You need three years of math and science. Four years of English which includes one semester of speech. You must have three years of social studies, which include one year of American History, one year of World History and one semester of U.S. Government and one semester of a social studies elective. The social studies elective are psychology, sociology, economics,

geography, and current events. You also need 8 semesters of physical education.

These are only the requirements for high school graduation. If you are planning to attend a major college or university they may have different admission requirements. You will need to check that information out.

2nd semester

We are in the process of getting ready for second semester. If you are a senior who qualifies to take college classes, you need to see Mr. Carr or Mrs. Rieber to get registered for the classes that you wish to take. Classes at Ellsworth Community College can fill up quickly.

The year is going by quickly. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact the guidance office at 641-648-6440

Girls Group is open to all girls who attend Iowa Falls-Alden High School.

Our goal is to provide any high school girl the opportunity to access a wide variety of activities, learning experiences, and ways to give back to the community. Our group runs on a bi-weekly basis during the entire school year, focused on an array of girl focused topics. We are funded by Church Women United. Without their donation, many of our activities would not be possible. We greatly appreciate their contribution to the group.

In the month of October, the activities that the girls participated in were decorating pumpkins for the staff at the high school, making caramel apples (for ourselves!), and going to the Coffee Attic for a little relaxation and group time. We also had fantastic coffee while there! In the month of November, we went to Ashbrook to paint fingernails and visit with the residents. They love it when we spend time with them.

The group is lead by Mrs. Rieber, Mrs. Kuhfus and Mrs. Mulford.

iFAHS juniors attended the ellsworth College Fair on november 2nd

The junior class of IFAHS traveled to Ellsworth Community College for a Career Day. Despite the drizzly day, the students had a great time exploring their futures by viewing various collegiate programs. In the morning each student visited two programs offered on the Ellsworth Campus. A third program that all students were required to attend was a career planning session with a career counselor (who was not affiliated with any college.) Ellsworth Community College provided lunch for the students and chaperones.

Your patronage is very much appreciated!

¿HABLA uSteD eSpAÑoL Students in Spanish I and II are communicating

in Spanish with pen pals! The old-fashioned kind with notebook paper, pencil, envelopes and stamps.

Spanish I and II students are getting to know their pen pal while practicing their Spanish. It started with Mrs. Buss contacting teachers at Osage and Gilbert, Iowa, and matching up all of the Spanish I and II students with pen pals from one of the two schools. Spanish I students write to the students in Osage and Spanish II students are writing to students in Gilbert.

All of the students have written and read at least one letter. When our first letters arrived, our students were very excited to read the letters and wanted to start writing their responses immediately. The teachers in Iowa Falls, Gilbert, and Osage coordinate what they are teaching/learning in class with the pen pals' letters so maximum learning can occur. This is a great way for our students to practice reading and writing what they are currently studying in Spanish.

As a group, all four students discussed and then selected a debate topic. Students then did research on the topic, organized their arguments, and wrote questions. Cleveland Band trip Scheduled for Spring

Some traditions fall by the wayside, but the IFAHS Band is determined to continue their tradition of taking a band trip once every four years. With this goal in mind, the band is planning to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, next spring. Students will depart via motorcoach when school dismisses on Wednesday, March 14. The first stop will be Valparaiso, Indiana, where the band will perform and participate in a clinic at the Chapel on the campus of Valparaiso University. They will continue on to Cleveland to the centerpiece of their tour, the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame. Additional attractions will include the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Great Lakes Science Center and Omnimax Theater, the Pro Football Hall of

StuDent CounCiL BuSY by Micaela ChoateIt’s been a very busy year so far for the student

council representatives. There are two students from each homeroom who are selected to be on student council for each trimester. Then there is a core team that is comprised of two boys and two girls from each grade level who are permanent members of the council.

Many things have been addressed so far in student council. One subject of discussion has been whether to get an iPad or an iPad 2. Also, we have spent time discussing the fall social, volleyball battle and Mix-It-Up Day and forming committees for each.

It is going to be a great year of decision making for the council and we look forward to helping improve the school as well as demonstrating good leadership skills.

Members of the council for the first trimester are Evan Krause, Alivia Gerstein, Karly Novy, LeLecia Tubbs, Alex Dague, Koltien Schwandt, Jewel Friend, Christina Clark, Alesha Terveer, Rebekah Van Gorp, Saje Ites, Jagger Olson, Jenna Loyd, Ryan Kloetzer, Weston Meyer, Amanda Fjeld, Micaela Choate, Aly Sheridan, Taylor Jeffrey, Odalis Cruz, Matt Aldinger, Kylie Chaplin, Emilee McDaniel and Conner Faga.

out of many applicants to be members of this year’s Core Leadership Team. Representing the eighth grade are Ross Norem, Emilee McDaniel, Chase Wagoner and Victoria Butt. Seventh graders selected were Todd

Raisch, Kayla Anderson, Trevor Stockdale and Maggie Thielen.

The Core Leadership Team went to Clarion to attend a leadership conference where they had the chance to listen to an enthusiastic speaker by the name of Craig Hillier. The team participated in many teamwork-building activities during the course of the day. The attendees felt that this was a great experience that will help them to anchor the student council during the school year.

The Riverbend Middle School Core Leadership Team poses for a picture on the shore of Lake Cor-nelia near Clarion on October 5, 2011. One of the themes of the day for our student leaders was to encourage a “break-through” of leadership skills. Demonstrating the sign language for “break-through” are the 2011 core leadership team. Red Ribbon Week was held at the end of October to give students an opportunity to show that they are drug-free and to help promote a healthy lifestyle. Red ribbons were numbered and given to all students on Monday of the week. Periodically during each day numbers were called and students won a prize if they had their red ribbon. Also, each day had a drug-free theme and students were encouraged to dress according to the theme, which produced some very interesting outfits during the week.

VoLLeYBALL BAttLeby Paige ItesRecently the fall sport season concluded with the

annual Volleyball Battle, featuring both 7th and 8th grade girls and boys playing each other. Players and spectators each paid one dollar with the proceeds going to the school nurse’s fund.

The action began with the 8th grade girls playing the 7th grade girls and the 8th graders won both games. Then the 7th grade girls played the 7th grade boys and beat the boys in both games. The action continued with the 8th grade boys defeating the 7th grade boys. The 8th grade girls kept busy taking on the 8th grade boys and defeating them twice.

The last match of the afternoon saw the hard-hitting 8th grade girls taking on the never-defeated staff team. The staff team remained unbeaten by winning both games against the 8th grade girls. A lot of fun was had by all with the proceeds going to a good cause.

On Friday, November 11, the Riverbend Middle School 8th grade band performed at Hy-Vee dur-ing a special breakfast honoring veterans. The Character Counts pillar we are focusing on during the month of November is “Responsibility.” We usually associate responsibility with completing homework on time, completing chores, and keeping track of one's school or personal items. It also includes protecting the environment by conserving, recycling, or reusing resources.

One activity we are planning to help improve our school is to collect “Box Tops for Education,” Hy-Vee receipts, Pizza Ranch Wagons and Campbell’s soup labels.

Each box top is worth 10¢. Therefore, 10 box tops would be $1.00...100 box tops would equal $10.00...and 1,000 box tops would be $100! Box tops are found on all types of items like General Mills® cereals, and products for Pillsbury®, Yoplait®, Betty Crocker®, Ziploc®, Green Giant®, Huggies®, Hefty®, Scott®, Cottonelle®, Nature Valley®, fruit snacks, and many more!

Each Hy-Vee receipt is worth a percentage of the total amount purchased. Pizza Ranch wagons are worth $.25.

Students would benefit from collecting by working together for a common goal, seeing the value of saving, and having extra books or other educational materials to use.

Even though these items can be collected all year, the Rock Run students will be having a friendly competition to see which grade can bring in the most box tops to help their school. You can help by doing the following:

1) Check you cupboards for products with a pink, yellow, and white rectangle labeled “Box Tops for Education.”

2) Cut out the 10¢ coupon.3) Ask your friends, neighbors, and relatives to help

you find box tops.4) Send coupons to Rock Run with a 3rd, 4th, or

5th grader. (You can drop them off at the office, too.)As you’re doing your holiday baking, or before you

throw away that box of Kleenex®, please stop and clip the “Box Top for Education” coupon and send it to

Rock Run elementaryRock Run. It’s an easy way to help your local children, or future community members, and their school. :)

December Character Counts

The pillar focus in the month of December is CARING. As part our Character Counts activities we are having a pajama collection the week of November 28-December 2nd. A food drive for the Iowa Falls food pantry is planned the week of December 5-9. During the week of December 12-16 we will be having a spare change drive for the nurse’s fund. We focus on caring in the month of December to help remind students that part of the holiday spirit is the act of giving and helping others. It is a natural tie with the cold weather and holiday season to talk to students about helping others who may be less fortunate or in a time of need. Community members can feel free to participate and may drop off any donations at the Rock Run office.

Fourth Grade Leader Dog program

The 4th Graders of Rock Run Elementary would like to thank Jennifer Bicknese of Copper Cupboard Bel Floral for the generous donation to our 4th Grade Store/Leader Dog Puppy Program.

The 4th Grade Store is a student-run business that sells a variety of items in order to raise money to sponsor Leader Dog Puppies for the Blind. It costs $500.00 to sponsor each puppy, and the money that is raised from the 4th Grade Store is used to buy food, pay vet bills, and other needed items. Besides just working at the store, the students are also given the chance to actually work with the puppies and train them.

The 4th Grade Store/Leader Dog Puppy Program is currently in its 9th year of operation. During that time, the students of Rock Run have successfully sponsored 24 puppies that have gone on to become working Leader Dogs for blind people and raised over $24,000.00. That is amazing since the store is only

open from the end of November through December. The store and the Kennel Club Restaurant, another student-run business, have been valuable teaching and learning tools for the students of Rock Run.

Jennifer’s interest in the 4th Grade Store/Leader Dog Puppy program first began three years ago when her oldest daughter was in fourth grade. “What an invaluable experience! Not only did the students raise money to support the Leader Dog program, but also the skills the children learned during the course of the year will last a lifetime. No matter what position they earned in the 4th Grade Store, the children learned responsibility, communication, and finance skills—three extremely important attributes any future employer would love to hire in an employee! Therefore, as a new business owner of Copper Cupboard Bel Floral,

it was my pleasure to donate merchandise for the children to sell in their own store! Hopefully, it will be a great holiday for all involved!” Submitted by: Mrs. Jones

Get Fit at Rock Run elementary

The “Get Fit” conditioning program for Iowa Falls Elementary students is off and “running” for a second year at the Rock Run gymnasium. Students arrive at the gym on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM to complete their morning

workout. The “Get Fit” program runs from October through May of this school year.

Students begin by following a Get Fit Training Guide and work and build their way up to running a complete mile for their daily workout.

Each student accumulates his or her mile count with the use of a mile punch card along with an electronic pedometer that measures distance. Incentives and prize rewards are shared for each student’s dedication and self-discipline as they accumulate their miles and join the Get Fit Mile Club. Also, a nutritious after-school snack is awarded to those who attend each morning.

This year the Get Fit Program welcomes its new

As we say at Get Fit, “You’ll be glad you came...you’re going to feel so good about your day!”

After-School programOur school district offers an after-school program

for students K-5. The program is housed at Rock Run Elementary. Each Wednesday students have special events called Wacky Wednesdays. Often the special event is a field trip to someplace in our community. In the following photo you can see the kids at the Apple Orchard. If you have questions about the after-school program or to sign up for the program, please call Rock Run Elementary.

StAR SneetCHWhat in the world is a Star Sneetch? Ask any Iowa

Falls third grader or former third grader, and their eyes will most likely light up as they reminisce about their Star Sneetch days. By authoring the book entitled, "Sneetches," Dr. Seuss was the brainchild behind Rock Run’s Star Sneetch week. In his story, through tough and costly lessons, the Sneetches realize that no one is superior to another. Eventually, the Sneetches are able to set aside their differences and live together peacefully.

The third grade Star Sneetch program, which was created over thirty years ago, has evolved into a treasured tradition. The purpose of this program is to enhance children’s self-esteem through individualized child-centered activities. Third graders learn to celebrate each child’s uniqueness as well as identify common interests. Each third grader has one entire week of their third grade year designated as their Star Sneetch week. On Monday, the featured student dons a Star Sneetch crown and special button while earning the privilege of having his/her name

Winter ConcertsAll families and community members are welcome to

join us for our winter concerts! The Pre-school concert will highlight our 4-5 year old groups at 1 PM on Wednesday, December 14. K-6 vocal and 5-6 band will perform on Thursday, December 15, starting at 6:30 PM. Both concerts will take place in the Alden Elementary gymnasium.

Holiday Gift ShopThanks to our wonderful parent volunteers and

Fine Arts Boosters, we will again be offering a gift shop for our K-6 to purchase items for family

featured on the weekly spelling test. Throughout the week, the Star Sneetch is invited to showcase his/her interests by creating a personalized display featuring favorite photos, souvenirs, awards, and other meaningful items. Students are also encouraged to demonstrate their talents for the class, bring their family pet for a visit, invite friends and family members for lunch, share their favorite recipes, and host special guests. The special guests often share memorable stories about the Star Sneetch, and some guests’ even share about their occupations in informal question and answer sessions. Through these conversations, many students meet a variety of community members and realize the importance of academics and quality character traits when it comes to pursuing a career.

As a culminating activity, the Star Sneetch is presented with a collection of letters from his/her classmates, which include positive affirmations, new learning, as well as the students’ favorite highlights of the Star Sneetch’s activities. Not only do the students cherish these letters for years to come, they also treasure their Star Sneetch week memories.

technology ClubWe have started again this year with a Technology

club for 6th Grade. We have 11 students signed up to explore this wonderful experience this year. We run the club from 3:00 to 5:00 every second Tuesday of the month.

During the Technology Club the kids will be learning all about the Google Apps that the school has and the uses of this for their future in learning. We will explore Documents, Calendar, Mail, Sites and a few other things that they will be able to use in their learning with the Cadets 1:1 lap top initiative starting in December at the high school level and hopefully soon at the other levels.

These 6th grade students in the club this year are responsible for keeping up a Google Site for the 6th grade. The site the kids will be keeping is: https://sites.google.com/a/ifacadets.net/alden-sixth-grade/. On this website they will be doing lunch menu, breakfast menu, student of the week, teacher of the month, weekly announcements, and lots more. We are always up for new ideas to add to this website for the use of all students and parents. (Maybe even updates of Assignments in classes!)

Reporting from mrs. Hoover’s roomCaitlin Bradley

One week our class prepared to visit Scenic Manor and participate in their Veterans Day program. Early in the week, we worked on perfecting the songs, "This Land is Made for You and Me" and "America the Beautiful." Lilly Bandow helped keep us in tune, while Levi Henderson and Trey Chaplin conducted. In Mrs. Hoover’s class, we spent time rediscovering what Veterans Day means to Americans all over the country. Roslynn Voyek, Kyle Arends, Jacob Beadle, and Autumn Schott volunteered to rehearse and perform Veterans Day poems for the Scenic Manor residents. We all created cards to thank the Scenic Manor Veterans for their service.

When Friday finally arrived, the residents were happy to see us. They really enjoyed our performance. After the program, we all visited with our grand-friends and ate delicious treats made by the Scenic Manor staff.

We’d like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Oliver for helping us learn and rehearse our songs for the performance. It was a lot of fun!

pineview elementaryFire Safety in preschool and K-prep

The preschool and K-Prep classes at Pineview learned about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week, which was held October 10-14. Darwin Bates, John Linn, and Jeff Orgell, local volunteer firefighters, came to the school to talk to the preschool and K-Prep classes. They taught the children how to be safe in their homes if there ever is a fire. The firefighters brought their entire uniforms which, when worn, can be very scary for a young child. They talked about

each piece as a firefighter put it on, explaining why they need it. It really helped the children to see our friendly firemen in their uniforms!

The children also enjoyed a visit from many of our volunteer firefighters during a school-wide Fire Prevention Assembly. They learned when to dial 9-1-1 and talked about things they should not touch or play with because they could start a fire.

The highlight of the week was when the preschool and K-Prep classes were able to go outside and see

what Mr. Bates had driven to the school—the fire truck! Children then had the opportunity to explore the inside and have their picture taken in it.

Thank you, local firefighters!

Kindergarten Field tripOn Friday, October 14th, our kindergarten

classes traveled to Cedar Falls to Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center to see the production of “Skippyjon Jones.” This play is based on the picture book by Judy Schachner. Skippyjon Jones is a Siamese kitten who enjoys pretending to be anything but the big-eared kitten that he is. Through the story, Skippyjon reminded us to use our imagination and to follow our dreams! It was a very enriching experience for our children to see this live production.

After eating lunch at the UNI-Dome, we were treated to an educational scavenger hunt provided by the UNI Science Museum. This included finding many different animals throughout the museum. It was an exciting afternoon!

The Iowa Arts Council through their Big Yellow School Bus Grant supported our transportation needs. Iowa Select Farms also contributed funds for transportation as well as providing lunch for the students who attended. We thank them for their support!

technology is AWeSome in 1st Grade!

In first grade classrooms of the past, teachers would play records on a record player or tapes in a cassette player. They would use overhead projectors and film projectors.

These teachers were considered to be on the cutting edge of technology! These days technology in the first grade classroom looks a lot different than it did years ago. Current technology has drastically changed how both teachers and students move through their school day. This Cadet Gazette article will allow you to get a glimpse of how technology is used throughout a typical day in the life of a first grader and a first grade teacher at Pineview Elementary School here in Iowa Falls.

When the school bell rings, first graders enter their classrooms and head directly to the SMART board to record if they are having hot or cold lunch, which also serves as a way to take attendance. The SMART board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection. A projector displays the output from the computer to which it is connected.

The SMART board includes 4 pens with digital ink that allow the students to write directly on the whiteboard. The teacher then enters attendance and lunch count into a program on his/her desktop or laptop computer, which goes directly to the school secretary and the district food service coordinator.

After the traditional pledge to the flag, students again use the SMART board to practice multiple math skills through the use of the calendar, all of which are displayed on the SMART board. Sharing time often follows calendar time. During sharing time a student gets up in front of his/her peers and shares several items that he/she has brought from home. Students are encouraged to tell their classmates about these items, which gives them a chance to speak in front of

an audience. Both the students and the teacher can make their voices be heard more clearly, and at an even volume, from any place in the room by using the REDCAT speaker system. The teacher wears this glorified microphone anytime he/she is in front of the whole class. It is a piece of technology that saves the teacher’s voice from wearing out from daily use, and helps shy, quiet students become more confident readers and speakers. Individual students often use the REDCAT microphones when reading aloud to their classmates, or when putting on plays or reader’s theater performances. These performances, along with student-created work, can be videotaped using the classroom Flip Camera. The Flip Camera is a compact video camera that can easily be used by the teacher and students. Occasionally you will see classroom created videos on the websites that each teacher at Pineview Elementary has.

Following calendar and sharing times first graders typically fill the rest of their morning with reading. The SMART boards, along with I-Pads, are used by children to do word work activities and games that improve their reading and writing skills. Some children will be using iPods, CD players, or computers to listen to books on CD, or to listen to stories that are read aloud on the Internet from many different websites. You may also find first graders doing word processing on desktop and laptop computers when working on improving their writing skills.

The afternoon in first grade is spent working on math, writing, science, social studies, and health. Another technology tool helps us to teach these subjects more effectively.

Each teacher has a scanner that is hooked up to his/her laptop computer. Scanners can be used for multiple purposes, but in first grade we have found them to be helpful to scan workbook pages and charts for math, reading, and handwriting. The images of workbook pages that we have scanned can be displayed on the SMART board, and children know exactly how to complete work that they will later do independently. No more overhead transparencies are necessary! SMART board technology is also used during Science, Social Studies, and Health. We have access to countless videos and interactive materials that enhance our curriculum in all of these areas.

First grade students and teachers today are living in an ever-changing, technologically advanced world. It is safe to say that first grade students and teachers at Pineview Elementary School are embracing these new technologies, and will become successful digital citizens of the 21st century.

Subject Spotlight on Art, Character Count & nutrition

This year the second grade students are switching classes in the morning for 30 minutes to work on different subjects. In Mrs. Sheahan’s room they are focusing on art, Character Counts, and nutrition. Each month we focus on a new Character Counts trait. This past month the Character Counts trait that we worked on was Respect, which means to follow the golden rule. The second grade students worked together to brainstorm ideas of what it looks like in our school when we treat other how we want to be treated. We also discussed what it looks like when we do the opposite of this. The students had the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of what it looks like to be disrespectful and respectful. We learned the importance of thinking before you say or do

something, because it is easy to tear someone down, but hard to put the pieces back together. The next pillar we will be focusing on is the Caring pillar.

physical education at pineview

Elementary PE has been up busy this year! After enjoying the awesome fall weather and playing a variety of activities outside we have moved into the gym for the winter! Some of the activities that we have done so far are Rainbow Tag, Get To Know Me, Quick Sand, Base Tag, Learning about healthy choices and how to keep our bodies healthy, Stations and Bean Bag Bull’s-eye. We are currently doing a unit that works on loco motor skills such as skipping, galloping, jogging, hopping, sliding, balancing and running. This unit also works on our non-loco motor skills such as balancing on one foot, hopping on one foot, jumping side to side, jumping front to back and many other in place activities. This unit is called Musical Dots and the students and I love it. We have the opportunity to include music, dance, be active and have fun! It has been a great year so far!

pineview elementary Fundraiser is a Huge Success!

Pineview Elementary recently completed our annual fundraiser with Club’s Choice. Our goal was to sell at least 2,100 items. We sold just over 2,100 items. Way to go! Pineview Elementary profited almost $12,000 from the fundraiser. This money will be used to purchase instructional supplies for the many programs at our school. Thank you to everyone who purchased items from our students and to all of the students and parents who worked so hard at selling.

Red Ribbon WeekRed Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and

largest drug-prevention program, reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life.

Pineview Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week October 24th–28th. Our focus at Pineview was healthy choices: eating right, taking care of our bodies and exercising.

During Red Ribbon Week all students participated in the following activities:

Monday - Wear Red Day — students wore red and received a Red Ribbon to wear
