GIS MilestonesTransition from CAD-based map to GIS-based map
1992-93 Release of ArcView – Affordable desktop GIS - point and click vs. command line – ease of use
1999 Release of ArcView 3.2 – enhanced CADReader extension, Projection utility
2001 ArcGIS Desktop 8.1 – ArcEditor option, improved CAD rendering, annotation, on-the-fly coordinate and datum projection, three application user interface.

CAD to ESRI Geodatabase
General process, considerations, tips & tricks
![Page 4: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Document CAD data
• Thorough documentation is critical– List layers along with descriptions
• Are CAD attributes such as color and line type important?
– Layer forms polygon boundary?– Layer is no longer needed in GIS
environment?– Etc…
![Page 5: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
•Combine CAD layers into single feature classes
•Use geodatabase subtypes
![Page 6: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Tools Used
• Mostly standard ArcGIS tools– Select Level from CAD Export selected
features to feature class– Copy/Paste– Import CAD Annotation
• CAD file needs a .prj file for this to work
• Data Interoperability extension– Great for automating repeated conversions
![Page 7: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
CAD lines for highway shields and other symbology are unneeded in the geodatabase
Example 1:
![Page 8: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Example 2: Do not convert these lines. Use geodatabase annotation properties
![Page 9: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Example 3: Do not convert these lines. Use geodatabase point feature
![Page 10: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
CAD lines that will form polygon feature classes need to be inspected closely for gaps
Example 1: PLSS lines Polygons
![Page 11: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Mtext is a problem
![Page 12: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Mtext does not convert to GDB
![Page 13: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Exploded Mtext….
Converts to single GDB annotations
![Page 14: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Fix misalignment of stacked lines with the Integrate tool
Gap
Double section lines
Integrate tool with .5 foot cluster tolerance will make these lines coincident.
![Page 15: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Attribution techniques
•Buffer + Spatial Join
•Attribute Transfer Mapping (last resort)
•Spatial Join – point in poly
•Join PIN to database for subdivision attributes
![Page 16: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Buffer + Spatial Join
![Page 17: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Attribute Transfer Mapping
![Page 18: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
2 Spatial join methods
1) Count field shows number of points within poly
2) Poly receives attributes of closest point. Distance = 0 indicates the point is within the poly boundary.
![Page 19: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Join for Count catches errors
![Page 20: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Spatial join for attributes produces some erroneous attributes
![Page 21: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Spatial join for attributes:distance > 0 indicates either non-
parcel polygons or errors.
![Page 22: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Watch out for crazy stuff!!

More crazy stuff • Workaround for Export to CAD bug w/ ellipse features
• DGN DWG GDB
![Page 24: Cad to ESRI Geodatabase Conversion](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081420/5586daa6d8b42a5c718b464a/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
