Security: In their first year, babies may need a comfort blanket or favourite toy.
Routine: babies and young children need routine and predictability – this increases their self-esteem.
Attachment: children need a steady, caring relationship with empathetic adults. (In child care settings, the key person system helps to meet this need.)

The need for praise and recognition
Children need to feel that their efforts as well as their achievements are recognised. You can do this by always encouraging and praising children when they have tried hard or have achieved something new, however small it might seem.

The need for responsibility
Children need to gain independence:
• Encourage them to look after themselves, e.g. dressing, washing hands.
• Provide challenges in line with interests and ability levels.
