Voice over IP (VoIP) over Satellite• DVB-RCS is capable of supporting Voice over IP (VoIP).

• Support of VoIP is generally a resource management issue• QoS and Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) is required • Dynamic capacity allocation, based on DVB-RCS MAC layer mechanisms• Can use DVB-RCS’ CRA class but this is not very bandwidth efficient.

• For VoIP over DVB-RCS the following issues must be addressed:• Identify proper traffic profile. • Minimize call set-up delay.• Enable QoS.• Minimize jitter.

• Bandwidth Efficiency...• Header Compression• Different Codecs are supported (G.729, G.723, G.711…)• Packetisation is configurable - can trade bandwidth vs. quality

DVB-S2 Overview

• DVB-S2 is an update of the DVB-S standard and was approved in 2004• Contains improvements on coding, modulation and adaptivity

To the service provider this means:• At least 25-30% more capacity and chargeable bits/s for same cost.

• Same satellite power and bandwidth.• Same code rate and modulation to all users.• More efficient handling IP packets.

• Up to 2,5 times more capacity and chargeable bits/s for same cost.• Same satellite power and bandwidth.• Variable code rate and modulation to all users.


Defense Applications

•Military and defense communication goes commercial• Major potential application of commercial satellite systems

•Tactical networks can be deployed quickly and reliably• Broadband networks combined with e.g. L-band Inmarsat • Integrated WiFI add mobility, flexibility and capacity. • Coverage on land, air and sea to individual personnel,

larger group and various vehicles.


DVB-RCS goes maritime• Maritime DVB-RCS equipment is available • Stabilized antenna sizes at ca. 1 meter similar

to Inmarsat.• Equipment cost is similar to Inmarsat (@ L-

band)• Operational costs are lower. • Data rates are higher.

• Maritime Ku-band coverage an issue• Mediterranean or Caribbean coverage may be

sufficient.• Users may not be licensed to use the maritime

equipment close to shore• Common for large ships to install two

antennas• Secures a link to the satellite independent of the

boats position relative to the space segment.
