12. County Commissioner's representative

Dan Wood spoke at length to praise Cabot District and all the people involved. He

gave special tribute to Isabelle and all the work and support she gave to the whole of

Cabot District.

He pointed out that Scouting was the biggest co-ed youth organisation in Avon thanks

to the thousands of volunteers working to make it possible. Their contribution is

invaluable. He had estimated that the time given by volunteers if paid at the

minimum wage level would amount to over £2 million.

His vision for the next year was more outstanding scouting with significant growth in

valued and enable scouting to be more inclusive - encouraging diversity. He wants the

excellence to be continued to be delivered with sustainable management.

Barry Seward of the 16ih explained to us how Sue Dobinson, who had died last year,

had set up a link with a scout group in Jinja, Uganda and befriended and provided

funds for educating 'Bob Mike' in the 1990's. Bob Mike then set up the El Shadai

family foster home. The house has recently been taken away from them and 167th are

raising money to help buy the house for the foster scheme to continue in memory of

Sue Dobinson. Barry invited us all to buy a fund raising raffle ticket.

The meeting closed at 8.35pm and everyone was invited to take part in the American

Supper with food provided by all the Groups and drinks provided by the District

Executive. Clive Grant gave us a superb power point presentation of a selection of all

of the Scouting Events of the year during the supper break. It was informative, funny,

moving and again an excellent way of giving everyone a flavour ofthe year.

Cub Scouts Sectional Report2012/2013

Another year has flown by since the last District AGM, and once again there are lots ofsuccess stories to report on from last time:

Back in September the District Cub camp took part at Wood house Park Activity Centre withan impressive 150 Cubs taking part. The theme of the camp was 'Space' - and the Cubseven had a visit from Darth Vader himself - not really - it was 'Crazy Chris' dressed up!!!The Cubs did a variety of activities from abseiling to archery and go-carting to the very wetand muddy assault course, and the camp wouldn't have been complete without a spacethemed campfire which I'm certainly sure could have been heard from outer space! On thefinal day, a man even came to talk to the Cubs about launching his homemade rockets.

Later in September, both the Beavers and Cubs were invited to take part in a sponsoredfootball competition at St Bede's School where they raised money for a variety of charities. This was a brilliant event played in a really friendly atmosphere, and the young peoplemanaged to raise just under £1000 pounds with the sponsor money they collected!Congratulations and well done to all who took part and the ih Bristol Pack for winning themain trophy at the competition.

In December, dozens of Cubs came together to play hockey with a fun swim afterwards atHorfield Leisure Centre, and in January just over 120 Cubs met up at Westbury BaptistChurch to take part in a craft and challenge afternoon, where they were able to do activitiesranging from making Plastercine models and decorating tiles to playing crazy golf withstraws and Malteasers or having a go at making their own bamboo bridges!

The Cub swimming gala, once again held at Horfield Leisure Centre in March was a greatsuccess with the 'fun races' continuing to be incorporated into the programme such asgetting a rubber duck from one side of the pool to the other on a float without it falling off,and a peg relay! Well done to all the Packs that took part! The Cubs that attended theJOTT walk in May at Blaise Castle certainly didn't lose their bearings and joined thousandsof Scouters across the world in taking part in a hiking activity over the course of theweekend.

It has, as always, been great fun visiting the Packs across the District or meeting them ontheir camps throughout the year. Margaret, Lee and I are always so impressed by thefriendliness and warm welcomes we have received wherever we have gone, and have lovedseeing the Packs in action.

All three of us would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the Cub Leaders, Assistants andSupporters for their excellent efforts and hard work over the past year. There have been alot of new faces joining the Cub leadership teams across the District which is great to see,and there have been changes in the leadership of some Packs too. We value the very realcommitment and dedication that everyone puts into making the Cub section in Cabot sodynamic and exciting all throughout the year.

We hope that 2013/14 is just as enjoyable for all the Cub Scouts and the many dedicatedleaders and helpers.

Chris Gavriel (DDC) Margaret Postlethwaite (District Cub Scout Leader) Lee White (District Cub Leader)

Beaver Scouts Sectional Report2012/2013

The Beaver section in Cabot has had a year to remember with the key District activitieslisted below:

Back in September a few Beaver Colonies came together with some Cub Packs to take partin a sponsored football competition raising money for charity. This was the first time theBeavers were involved, and they were a real credit to themselves. As well as this, theyoung people who attended managed to raise just under £1000 for the designated charities!Well done to the 44th Bristol Beavers for winning the Beaver competition.

In October, some Colonies took part in a Junk modelling competition, where they had tothink creatively to make models based on animals. The winning design was a very snappyand realistic looking crocodile made by Beavers from the 126th and 62nd Bristol.

Then in March came the highlight of the year, with biggest Beaver event ever put on byCabot District with a staggering 160 Beavers descending upon Bristol Docks for an actionpacked day which saw them visiting some of the key Bristol landmarks in the area. TheBeaver Scouts and their leaders, (from just about every Colony from the Districtrepresented) were able to:

• Relax on a ferry cruise as they explored the harbour by water. ..• Explore the SS Great Britain ship and the museum ...• Walk around the dark, spooky Recliffe caves ...• Look around the M-Shed Museum ...• Make pirate hats and telescopes at the Benjamin Perry Boathouse• AND they used their observation skills to complete an '1- spy' quiz of the local area

The day was a HUGE success, and it couldn't have happened without the extraordinaryvision and passion from Chloe Harvey from the 1st Bishopston as well as Lee & Margaret forall their hard work behind the scenes.

The annual JOTT hike held at Blaise Castle in May was once again well attended from theBeaver Colonies this year, and a special thanks must go to Ray Bamford from the 62nd andPhil John from the 91st for helping to organise this event - AND not losing any Beavers orleaders along the way!

As well as all the District activities put on this year, the Beavers have been kept extremelybusy in their own individual Colonies. The leadership teams of each Colony have ensuredthat a fantastic programme has been enjoyed by their youngsters on a weekly basis, andevery time the District team have come to visit there have been smiles and laughter allround ...

We would once again like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the adult volunteers who helpmake the Beaver section within our District such a fun and worthwhile activity for the YoungPeople to do. I am sure that they will all remember the fun and adventure that they take partin on a weekly basis for many years to come.

Chris Gavriel (DDC) Margaret Postlethwaite (District Cub Scout Leader) Lee White (District Cub Leader)
