IntroductionService Information S280-77-2 provides descriptive andapplication information for the KME4-79-1 and KME4-79-2Data Port-to-RS232 Compatible Computer InterfaceCable and Adapter Accessories. The accessories areused in conjunction with a Kyle Form 4C recloser controland the Form 4C INTERFACE™ Personal ComputerSoftware program, running on a DOS-compatible per-sonal computer. Refer to Bulletin KSPS2 for completeinformation.
For additional information on the Form 4C control, includ-ing a description of the front panel Data Port and the con-trol’s digital communications capabilities, refer to ServiceInformation S280-77-1.
DescriptionThe data port-to-computer interface cable accessoriesshown in Figure 1, provide a convenient means to tem-porarily connect a personal computer to the front paneldata port of a Form 4C recloser control, for programmingor interrogation of the control.
Either accessory converts the low-power output of theForm 4C control’s data port circuitry, to the standardRS232 interface.
The KME4-79-1 accessory permits a temporary digitalcommunications link from the control’s data port to anyDOS-compatible personal computer with a standard IEEE25-pin serial port. For personal computers with a 9-pinserial port; a standard DB25 male to DB9 female adaptercable must be used, which is readily available through mostcomputer suppliers. The KME4-79-1 cable is six feet long.
The KME4-79-2 accessory permits a temporary digitalcommunications link from the control’s data port to anyDOS-compatible personal computer with a standard 9-pinserial port. The KFME4-79-2 cable is five feet long.
The lengths of the data port-to-computer interface cablesare limited, due to the limitation of the low-power compo-nents used in the control data port circuitry and the mini-mal surge isolation of the data port from the outside world. The Form 4C control data port is designed for temporaryconnection only, of either a personal computer or theCooper Power Systems hand-held Data Reader.
9 Volt dc Power SupplyA 9-15Vdc power supply is required to operate the KME4-79-1 accessory RS232-to-Data Port adapter only. Apower input jack is located on the adapter. The accessoryincludes a a 9Vdc battery holder (battery not included)and cable, which connects to the power input jack. Batteryoperating life is approximately 4 hours (less under condi-tions of extreme heat or cold). It is used in applicationswhere supply voltage is not readily available, such asremote substations or recloser line installations and inter-rogation of the Form 4C control via a personal computer,is required.
The 9Vdc power supply can also be obtained from any ofthe following sources:
1. Personal Computer Serial Port. The serial port of thepersonal computer (either a 25-pin or 9-pin serial port)may include a 9-15Vdc supply. Most computers with a9-pin serial port do include a 9-15Vdc supply. If thecomputer’s serial port provides the necessary voltage,no external 9Vdc supply should be connected to thepower input jack of the KME4-79-1 RS232-to-DataPort adapter. Refer to the personal computer instruc-tion manual for additional information.
2. 120 Vac-to-9Vdc Supply Adapter Accessory (CatalogNumber KME4-208, ordered separately). This voltagesupply adapter rectifies and steps down a 120Vacinput to 9Vdc output. It includes a plug that connectsto the power input jack of the KME4-79-1 RS232-to-Data Port adapter.

3. 9Vdc Supply Cable Accessory (Catalog NumberKME4-207, ordered separately). This cable is identicalto the 9Vdc battery holder and cable supplied, less thebattery holder. The pigtail end is designed to tap thedc power available at a remote terminal unit (RTU).The other end of the cable includes a plug that con-nects to the power input jack of the KME4-79-1RS232-to-Data Port adapter.
NOTE: The KME4-79-2 accessory does not require a sepa-rate voltage source.
Installation and OperationTo connect the KME4-79-1 or the KME4-79-2 data port-to-computer interface cable accessory, refer to the con-nection diagram shown in Figure 2.
For operating instructions on the use of the Form 4CINTERFACE™ Personal Computer Software program, running on a DOS-compatible personal computer, refer toBulletin KSPS2.
