EPRI Cable Aging Management- Initial Research
Cable research began in the mid-1980s Initial focus was on low voltage cables
(< 600 volts) Research issues studied included:
– Aging effects of thermal, radiation and combined thermal and radiation
– Condition assessment of jackets and insulation
– Thermally induced currents – Condition monitoring of cables (Indenter,
frequency domain reflectometry) Focused shifted to medium voltage
cables (> 600V ≤ 15 kV) in the late 1990’s to address submergence degradation (water trees)

Cable Research- Development of Aging Management Programs
Focus shifted to aging management program development in 2009– Implementation guides issued in 2010 for
I&C, low voltage power and medium voltage cables
Aging management guides dictate– Scoping (not limited to license renewal)– Identifying cable stressors Thermal damage, radiation,
submergence…– Walkdown guidance to identify adverse
equipment environments – Condition monitoring (tan delta, visual
tactile, indenter, frequency domain reflectometry, etc.)
– Health reporting– Documentation

Cable Aging Research- Support Beyond 60
Long term operation (LTO)-supporting since 2012 – How long will cables last?– How will we know?
Expanded Material Degradation Assessment (EMDA)– Identified level of knowledge– Knowledge gaps identified
Research Coordination and Collaboration group started in June, 2012 LTO Research Roadmap to track

Summary
There is a large amount of EPRI research supporting cable aging that has already been completed DOE, EPRI and NRC and our research partners (National Labs and
NIST) communicate to ensure needed research will address EMDA knowledge gaps and update our plans and track progress to ensure it will be ready to support initial license request for beyond 60 years operation Aging management guides exist and will be updated as new research
results, implementation lesson learned, and OE dictate EPRI Cable UG- Meets yearly, provides industry forum to:
– Status aging management implementation progress, lesson learned– Discuss industry cable operating experience – Discuss recent EPRI research results, status industry on in-progress EPRI
research – Networking between utility, NRC, DOE researchers, academia, cable
manufacturer’s and service providers
