Open the hood, locate the cabin air fi lter duct clamp 1.

Release the cabin air fi lter duct clamp by depressing 2.

Flip the fi lter duct upside down so the fi lter is now 4.

Locate the cabin air fi lter panel under the glove 1.

compartment on the passenger side. Remove

three screws.

Disengage three tabs to release panel from housing. 2.

Remove panel by sliding away from the mounting and

pulling downward.

Unlock plug connections and disconnect from 3.

the panel.

Pull the cabin air fi lter down to remove.4.

Replace with a clean cabin fi lter.5.

Reconnect plug connections and slide panel back 6.

in place, making sure guides on bottom of panel are

seated in the mounting, until the tabs snap back.

Replace screw.

Locate the cabin air fi lter panel under the glove 1.

Release the two cabin air fi lter panel latches.2.

Remove the cabin air fi lter panel by 3.

The access door for the cabin fi lter is located under 1.

Tools needed are a Phillips screw driver and a 1.

the up position and open the hood.

Remove the 3 (three) screw caps from the left, middle 2.

and right side of passenger cowl cover. Remove the

screws and the weather stripping.

Lift off the passenger cowl cover and unsnap clip on 3.

left side of fi lter housing.

Remove fi lter frame4.

Remove dirty fi lter from frame and replace with clean 5.

cabin fi lter. Replace frame in housing and fasten clip.

Replace weather stripping, screws and screw caps.

Close hood.

Tools needed are a Phillips screwdriver and a 1.

standard screwdriver. Open hood and on the

passenger side of the cowl is the cover plate for the

cabin fi lter. Remove 4 (four) caps from windshield

side of cover plate.

Remove 4 (four) screws and the fi ttings from opposite 2.

side of cover plate. Remove cover plate.

The rain shield is now visible. Remove the rain shield 3.

by pulling up and out.

Lift the fi lter from the housing and replace it with a 4.

clean cabin fi lter. Reinsert the rain shield, matching 3

(three) clips on top of shield to indentations in top of

sheet metal and reattach cover plate.

Tools needed are a Phillips screw driver and a 1.

the up position and open the hood.

Remove the cap on screw in center of cowl cover. 2.

Unscrew halfway and pull out fi tting. Unsnap 3 (three)

clips on front edge of cover and remove cover.

Either a fi lter or screen is visible under cover. Flip out 3.

edge of housing and remove the fi lter or plate.

Replace with a clean cabin fi lter making sure the 4.

arrows on the fi lter are facing up. Reclip front of

housing in place and replace the cowl cover.

Open hood and unhook clip on left of passenger side 1.

Locate the cabin air fi lter compartment access cover 2.

remove the 5 (fi ve) screws holding the fi lter

compartment access cover. Use caution to avoid

damage to the access cover or loss of the screws.

Remove the fi lter compartment access cover. Slide 3.

Tools needed are a Phillips screwdriver and a 1.

standard screwdriver. Stop windshield wipers in up

position. Thunderbird: open hood and remove left

and right cowl trim pieces, wiper arm nut covers,

then the nuts and wiper arms. Remove the pin type

retainers attaching the cowl cover to the cowl.

Lincoln: open hood. Jaguar: open hood and remove

windshield arm nut covers. Remove windshield wiper

arm retaining nuts, then remove the wiper arms using

a suitable windshield wiper arm puller.

For 2. Thunderbird, go to step 3. Lincoln: remove the

pin type retainers attaching the passenger side cowl

cover to the cowl. Detach the rubber hinge cover from

rear outer corner of the passenger side cowl cover.

Pull up on the passenger side cowl cover to release

the lower retaining clips, then remove the cover.

Jaguar: remove the cowl grille screw covers. Remove

the cowl grille screws and retainers, then remove the

cowl grille.

Thunderbird and Lincoln:3. release the right hand

corner of the cabin air fi lter, by pushing on the

retaining clips. Release the left hand corner of the

cabin air fi lter, then lift the fi lter from the cowl

opening. Install a new cabin fi lter through the

passenger side cowl opening. Ensure the airfl ow

marking is facing in the proper direction. Jaguar:

open the cabin fi lter cover, and remove the fi lter.

Install a new cabin air fi lter, if fi lter is equipped with

air fl ow markings, ensure the marking is facing in the

proper direction. Close the cabin fi lter cover.

Thunderbird:4. install cowl cover, ensuring all retainers

are properly attached; install the wiper arms, secure

with nuts, then install the nut covers. Replace the

left and right cowl trim pieces. Close the hood.

Lincoln: install the passenger side cowl cover. Ensure

all the retainers are properly attached. Close the

hood. Jaguar: install the cowl grill. Ensure all the

screws and retainers are properly secured. Position

windshield wiper arms to the pivots, then install the

retaining nuts and close the covers. Close the hood.

Remove the windshield wiper arm nut covers. Remove 2.

the wiper arms using a suitable windshield wiper arm

puller. Remove the cowl grille screw covers, screws,

and retainers, then remove the cowl grille. Open the

cabin fi lter cover and remove the fi lter.

Install a new cabin fi lter, ensuring the air marking is 3.

facing in the proper direction.

Close the cabin fi lter cover and install the cowl grille. 4.

Ensure all the screws and retainers are properly

secured. Position the windshield wiper arms to

the pivots, then install the retaining nuts and close

the covers.

Close the hood.5.

Remove the 2 (two) screws in the panel and take off 3.

side of the cowl. Unscrew and remove the 4 (four)

screws in passenger side cowl cover.

Lift out passenger side cowl cover.2.

Unsnap hinges on both sides of the cabin air fi lter 3.

cover and remove.

Pull out fi lter and replace with a clean cabin 4.

weather stripping.

Tools needed are a Phillips screwdriver. Open the 1.

hood. The cover for the cabin fi lter is located on the

passenger side in the cowl.

Unsnap the cover and the fi lter is visible. Locate the 2.

lever on the left side of the housing. Push the lever

out and remove the fi lter.

Replace with a clean cabin fi lter by depressing the 3.

lever in the housing and sliding the fi lter into the

double track. Replace cover.

Under the glove compartment is a kick plate cover 2.

take off cover.

The door to the cabin fi lter is now visible. 3.

Remove screw in door and unhinge.

Remove the fi rst fi lter by pulling straight down. 4.

Remove the second fi lter by sliding forward and

pulling down. Replace with clean cabin fi lters.

Reattach door and kick plate cover.

Tools needed are a standard screwdriver. Put 1.

windshield wipers in up position. Open hood and

remove weather stripping from passenger side

of cowl.

Unclip wiper fl uid hose in three places and remove.2.

Unscrew and remove fi ttings on either side of cowl. 3.

Remove center screw cap and take out cowl cover.

Remove fi lter and replace with a clean cabin fi lter. 4.

Reattach the cowl cover. Snap wiper fl uid hose in

place and replace weather stripping.

Park Avenue:1. Place the ignition switch in the off

position, remove the supplemental infl atable restraint

fuse from the underhood fuse panel. Remove the

left sound insulator fasteners. Disconnect the left

sound insulator electrical connectors, then remove

the insulator. Seville: Place the ignition switch in

the off position, remove the supplemental infl atable

restraint fuse from the rear fuse panel. On 1997

models, the rear fuse panel is located in the luggage

compartment. On the 1998-2003 models, the rear

fuse panel is located under the rear seat. Remove the

two retaining screws from the rear edge of the left

sound insulator. Push in on the snap tabs to release

the insulator. Disconnect the left sound insulator

electrical connectors, then remove the insulator.

Twist the shift cable grommet ad position away from

the cabin air fi lter access door. It may be necessary to

cut the tie strap and peel back the foam insulation to

position the grommet away from the door.

Seville and Park Avenue:2. Remove the cabin air fi lter

access cover from the A/C and heater module. For

Park Avenue models since 2000, pull the cabin air

fi lter access cover down and then out to remove from

the A/C and heater module.

Seville and Park Avenue:3. Remove the tape, then pull

out the fi rst cabin fi lter element using the fi lter tab.

Remove the tape, then pull out the second cabin fi lter

element using the fi lter tab. Remove the tape, then

pull out the third cabin air fi lter element using the

fi lter tab.

Seville and Park Avenue:4. To ease installation,

lubricate the new fi lter guides with silicon spray.

Install the fi rst clean cabin fi lter into the case using

a long thin blade screw driver and fi lter tab. Raise

the fi lter until it is parallel with the A/C and heater

module. Ensure the leading edge of the fi lter engages

the fi lter case holding rib. Engage the new second

cabin fi lter in the tab of the fi rst fi lter. Slide the

second fi lter into the remaining channels of the fi rst

fi lter. Using the fi lter tab, raise the fi lter until it is

parallel with the A/C and heater module. Ensure

the leading edge of the fi lter engages the fi lter case

holding rib. Engage the third new cabin fi lter in the

tab of the second fi lter. Slide the third fi lter into the

remaining channels of the second fi lter. Fold the tab

of the second fi lter down. Fold the tab of the third

fi lter up and over the second fi lter.

Seville and Park Avenue:5. Install the A/C and heater

module fi lter cover. Ensure cover is properly seated.

For Seville, position the shift cable grommet. Position

the left sound insulator to the instrument panel, then

connect the electrical connectors. Install the left

sound insulator fasteners. Torque the fasteners to

18 inch lbs. (Seville), 17 inch lbs. (Park Avenue). Be

sure to install the fasteners in the proper locations.

Install the SIR fuse. From a position off to the side of

the air bag module, place the ignition switch in the

on position. The air bag warning lamp should fl ash 7

times and then turn off. Place the ignition switch in

the off position.

tabs from either side of compartment. Remove three

screws on left, center and right of compartment.

Close compartment.

Remove access panel from right side of compartment. 2.

Remove two screws under access panel. Remove

access panel in center of console under radio. Remove

screw on right side under this panel.

Remove access panel under glove compartment. 3.

Remove two screws on underside of glove

compartment and one screw on metal bar. Remove

glove compartment, disconnecting light wire on

left side.

Remove remaining two screws on either side of metal 4.

bar. Remove bar. The access door to the fi lters is now

visible. Pull up on access door to release and remove.

Pull out fi lter in housing and slide second into opening 5.

Remove the two bolts securing the glove

compartment to the instrument panel; remove the

instrument panel right lower cover retaining screw,

then the cover.

Remove the glove compartment frame retaining 2.

screws. Remove the glove compartment frame with

the knee bolster.

Detach the wiring harness from the evaporator 3.

housing clamps. Remove the fi lter cover from the

evaporator housing. Remove the cabin fi lter and the

element from the fi lter housing and replace with a new

cabin fi lter. Ensure the fi lter element and fi lter housing

arrow markings are facing in the same direction.

Install the cabin fi lter into the evaporator housing.

Install the evaporator housing fi lter cover. Ensure 4.

the fi lter cover is securely seated. Attach the wiring

harness to the evaporator housing clamps. Position

the glove compartment frame and knee bolster to the

instrument panel, install the attaching bolts. Install

the stops at each side of the glove compartment.

Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable. After 1.

3 minutes to allow the air bag system backup power

capacitor to discharge. Remove the stops located at

each side of the glove compartment.

Remove the two bolts securing the glove 2.

diagonal cutters, cut the plastic cross brace located

at the glove compartment opening at each end, then

discard the plastic brace.

Remove the glove compartment frame retaining bolts 3.

Remove the fi lter cover from the evaporator housing. 4.

Remove the cabin fi lter from the evaporator housing

and install a new cabin fi lter. Install the evaporator

housing fi lter cover. Ensure the fi lter covers securely

seated. Position the glove compartment frame, then

install the attaching bolts and screws.

Install the stops at each side of the glove 5.

compartment. Connect the battery ground cable.

Ensure no air leaks are present a the evaporator cabin

fi lter cover.

Sonata: 1. Open glove compartment. Press inward at

both sides of the glove compartment, then lower the

glove compartment. XG: Open the hood. Remove

the glove compartment stop, then lower the glove

compartment.

Sonata:2. Remove the lower side instrument panel and

crash trim pad. Remove the four glove compartment

upper cover retaining screws, then the cover. Remove

the two glove compartment retaining bolts, then the

glove compartment. Press on the cabin air fi lter cover

tab, then remove the cover. XG: Remove the two

glove compartment attaching bolts and two attaching

screws, then the glove compartment. Remove the

right lower side instrument panel crash trim pad.

Disconnect the luggage compartment lamp electrical

connector. Push downward on the blower unit under

cover, then remove the cover.

Sonata:3. Remove the cabin air fi lter from the blower

unit opening. Install a new cabin fi lter, ensuring the

air fl ow marking is facing in the proper direction.

Install the cabin air fi lter cover, ensuring the cover

is properly installed. XG: Remove the cabin air fi lter

cover, remove the fi lter from the blower unit opening.

Install a new cabin fi lter, ensuring air fl ow marking

is facing in the proper direction. Install the cabin air

fi lter cover, ensuring the cover is properly installed.

Install blower unit under cover. Connect the luggage

compartment lamp electrical connector.

Sonata:4. Position the glove compartment to the

instrument panel, then install the two retaining bolts.

Install the glove compartment upper cover. Install

the lower side instrument panel crash pad. Lift the

glove compartment into position. Close the glove

compartment. XG: Position the glove compartment

to the instrument panel, then install the two retaining

bolts. Install the glove compartment upper cover.

Install the right lower side instrument panel crash

trim pad. Install the lower side instrument panel

crash pad. Position the glove compartment to

the instrument panel, then install the two glove

compartment attaching bolts and two attaching

screws. Lift the glove compartment into position and

install the stop. Close the glove compartment.

screws. Lift the glove compartment into position and

install the stop. Close the glove compartment.

Tools needed are a screw driver. Set the wipers in 1.

the upright position. Open the hood. Dismantle the

cover’s right hand clips. Remove the clip on the corner

tab to the windscreen corner.

Loosen the rear main seal halfway. Lift off the foam 2.

block and lift up the front edge of the cover so that

the hood and clip release on the rear edge. Fold back

the corner tab. Fold up the cover halfway.

Fold up the clips from the fi lter holder. Remove the 3.

cabin fi lter. Lift up the drainage hose and clean it. Fit

the drainage hose and insert a new cabin fi lter. The

new fi lter should be fi tted with the arrows directed in

towards the car.

Fold back the holders clips. Fold down the cover. Fit 4.

the corner tab under the windscreen moulding. Insert

the hook under the windscreen and press down the

cover so that the clips lock. Fit the clip to the corner

tab to the windscreen corner. Lift up the foam block

and fi t the clip. Fit the rear main seal. Check the

operation of the wipers. Close the hood.

Move the wire harness to the left. The wire harness is 2.

Highlander:1. Remove the screw retaining the eyelet

clip. Open the glove compartment door. GS:

Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.

After disconnecting the battery ground cable, wait at

least 90 seconds to allow the air bag system backup

power discharge. Remove the bolts attaching the

glove compartment to the instrument panel. Airbag

system components are located in this area, use

extreme caution. Open the glove compartment door.

RX: Open the glove compartment. Remove the cover

from the rear of the glove compartment.

Highlander: 2. Push inward at each side of the glove

compartment door to disengage the retainers, then

lower the door. Through the glove compartment

opening, remove the fi lter cover from the fi lter

outlet. Pull the cabin fi lter housing from the fi lter

outlet. Remove the cabin fi lter element from the fi lter

housing. GS: Remove the three glove compartment

retaining screws, then the glove compartment.

Remove the fi lter cover, then the fi lter element. RX:

Through the glove compartment cover opening,

disengage the fi lter cover retainers, then remove the

cover and cabin air fi lter housing. Remove the cabin

air fi lter from the fi lter housing.

Highlander:3. Install a new cabin fi lter element into

the fi lter outlet. Ensure the fi lter element is properly

positioned in the fi lter housing. GS: Replace with

a clean cabin fi lter. Install the cabin air fi lter cover.

Ensure the cover is securely seated. Position the glove

compartment to the instrument panel, then install the

attaching screws. RX: Install a new cabin fi lter into

the fi lter housing. Through the glove compartment

cover opening, install cabin air fi lter housing, then the

fi lter cover. Ensure the cover is properly seated.

Highlander:4. Install the fi lter housing into the fi lter

outlet. Install the fi lter cover. Push inward at each

side of the glove compartment door, then raise the

door into place. Close the glove compartment door.

Install the screw retaining the eyelet clip. GS: Close

the glove compartment door, then install the two

attaching bolts. Connect the battery ground cable.

RX: Install the glove compartment rear cover. Close

the glove compartment.
