Welcome to the 25th Annual Cabernet for Connoisseurs! We're honored to bring together this special community of

support to house families completely free of charge (thanks to you!) during their child's treatment for life-threatening

illnesses. In partnership with UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, Family House provides family-centered care for all

who pass through our doors.

The funds raised this evening will provide compassionate care for the 4,500

patients, parents, and siblings we serve annually at the Nancy and Stephen Grand Family House, which

includes so much more than free, temporary housing. Each day, in partnership with dedicated volunteers, families receive free meals, transportation, emotional support, birthday parties, sibling groups, music performances,

arts and crafts, and other opportunities for normalcy during life's greatest challenge.

This evening we celebrate my dear friends, Pam and George Hamel. The Hamels were early and generous partners of Family

House, but that's only one part of their philanthropic story. The Hamels work under the radar to support: the homeless,

affordable housing for those hit the hardest in the 2017 wine country fires, as well as many other important local organizations

helping vulnerable folks in the Bay Area. We’re delighted to recognize their important work in our community.

In our founder, Dr. Art Ablin's words, there are many excellent causes to support, but none better than Family House. Thank you for being here,

and have a fabulous evening!

Cheers and thank you for coming to the 25th Annual Family House Cabernet for Connoisseurs event! This year we honor Pam and George Hamel. George, Pam, and their entire Hamel family have been huge Family House supporters over the years, and this recognition is long overdue.

The Cabernet for Connoisseurs event is our flagship event for Family House, bringing together two of the greatest features of the Bay Area: Wine and Philanthropy. Our 40 vintners at this year's event, many of whom have supported this event for years, if

not decades, are the finest in the world. Yes, their wines are fantastic, but our Family House vintners are great people who endeavor to give back to their community whenever and wherever possible. Please support them the way they have supported Family House.

Tonight's event can only happen due to the incredible efforts and teamwork of many people. Our event chairs, Scott Miller and Jeff Smith, have somehow managed to outdo themselves again this year. They lead an outstanding event committee that always attracts fresh and exciting auction lots and vintners to the party. Each year this team of dedicated Family House board members, employees, and perennial supporters raise the bar for the event, and each year they deliver. Our Event Producer, Camilla Burraston, makes everything look seamless to our guests, but rest assured that "behind the scenes," it is not.

I want to give a special shout out to our fearless leader Alexandra Morgan and our world-class Family House staff. The 80 families staying at Family House each night receive exceptional compassion, care, and comradery as they try to manage the unimaginable. Making all of this happen—tonight's event and every day of the year—are the more than 5,000 volunteers that contribute their time and talents to Family House each year.

Since 1981, Family House has served as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by providing physical comfort and emotional support, free from financial concerns. The Nancy and Stephen Grand Family House is located just a few blocks from the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Mission Bay. With cancer treatment taking weeks, months, or even years, Family House is an oasis for children and families going through an extremely difficult time. Family House provides compassionate housing, amenities, and support for up to 80 families per night, always 100% free of charge, thanks to generous donor and volunteer support.

PAMELA AND GEORGE HAMEL, JR.

Family is at the center of everything Pamela and George Hamel, Jr. strive for.

Opened in 2014, Hamel Family Wines, located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, is truly a family affair. George and Pam's son, George Hamel III, oversees the sales, financial and business operations, and his brother John oversees the winegrowing and winemaking. Driven by a desire to showcase their unique vineyard sites, the Hamel family crafts wines that express the distinctive characteristics of their terroir through biodynamic and organic farming practices.

When wildfires swept through wine country in 2017, Pam and George sprang into action. They quickly organized and hosted a benefit with singer John Fogerty in support of Wine Country Wildfire Relief, raising more than $1.2 million. For the Hamels, who lost their own home in the fire, it was a typical act of generosity. When the son of family friends was diagnosed with a brain tumor, the Hamels wasted no time in fundraising on behalf of the McKenzie family, ensuring that 100% of their attention could be focused on helping Frankie to get well again.

Family is everything for Pam and George Hamel, and we are proud and grateful to call them, their children, and grandchildren, a part of ours.

FAMILY STORY: THE TEDESCO FAMILY

“We are better people for having been connected with Family House.”

Amidst the excitement of expecting their first child, Teresa and Nick Tedesco faced an awful shock—the knowledge that their son Rocco would be born with a life-threatening congenital heart defect: Transposition of the Great Arteries. At only 9 days old, Rocco had corrective open heart surgery at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. Fortunately, and without knowing it, they were already part of a larger community of support in Teresa's employer, John Schwartz, proprietor of Amuse Bouche Winery, and longtime Cabernet for Connoisseurs participating vintner.

The Tedescos stayed at Family House, right by the Hospital for a month, entirely free of charge while Rocco recovered from this complicated, invasive surgery. During their stay at Family House, Teresa and Nick connected with other families, "They took us under their wing and helped us navigate our stay. We don't know what we would have done without being able to stay next to the hospital."

Thanks to world-renowned UCSF pediatric cardiologist Dr. Mohan Reddy, Rocco's surgery was a stunning success, and today, Rocco is a thriving, happy 15-month old. "We count our blessings every day."


FAMILY STORY: THE MCKENZIE FAMILY

“Family House is a part of our future, not just a part of our past."

"Brain tumor" might be two of the worst words imaginable, and for then-3-year-old Frankie's parents, they knew the family had a fight ahead of them. After the diagnosis, Frankie endured brain surgery, 6 weeks of radiation, and three different stem cell transplants at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. Thanks to friends Pam and George Hamel, they quickly moved into Family House.

The connections that they made at Family House were invaluable. Parents here can relate to each other through incredibly difficult situations, and immune-compromised children can play freely and safely in our clean and sanitized home away from home.

"It was nice to have a home base here, and not have to drive all the way 2 hours back home to Santa Rosa every day during outpatient treatment."

2. By his or her purchase, the buyer waives any claims for liability against either FHI or the donor of the property or service. Neither Family House nor the donor is responsible for any personal injury or damages to property that may result from the property or services sold.

3. It is the Event Committee’s intent to accurately describe all auction items with information provided by the auction’s contributors. The Event Committee of FHI is not responsible for the correct description or authenticity of any item.

To enter a bid, please raise your bid number toward the auctioneer. A bid is registered only when formally recognized and called by the auctioneer.3. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser and acknowledgment is legal and binding. With the word SOLD from the auctioneer, title to the auction item will pass to the highest bidder.4. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have the sole and final discretion, either to determine the successful bidder, or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute.5.
