Willkommen to The Paramount, or — as it has been transformed for this evening — to the Kit Kat Klub for Roundabout Theatre Company’s thrilling production of Cabaret as part of our 2016–2017 KeyBank Broadway at the Paramount season!

Set against a political climate of intolerance and the stark socio-political inequities beginning to percolate in a pre-WWII Berlin, Cabaret’s story serves as an important reminder of the imperative role art plays in both connecting us to, and shielding us from hardships unfolding around us.

As we follow Cliff, an American novelist seeking inspiration in 1930s Berlin, we witness both a foreshadowing of the atrocities to come, as well as the decadent and escapist lifestyle offered by Sally Bowles and the enigmatic emcee of the Kit Kat Klub. However, it’s not long before the two worlds collide, with the Kit Kat Klub unable — and perhaps unwilling — to serve as a respite from the increasingly ominous outside world. Through this collision, we are reminded that art acts as a mirror to our world – reflecting beauty and turmoil with equal clarity.

Art’s ability to both entertain and inform is something we value very highly at STG. Though beautiful and engaging, the story of Cabaret contains themes of intolerance and escapism that continue to reflect the climate of our world today. In art we find the moments of pleasure, solace, and unity that are necessary for surviving tumultuous times; while, we also find a critical way to document, unpack, and critique present-day struggles. STG finds value in turning to art with the intention of seeking both.

We hope that tonight’s performance will both engage and enlighten as we invite you to join us on this journey to a place and time in history that is still so relevant today.

Who’s Who

Welcome LetterWelcome to the Kit Kat Klub, and to John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff ’s seductive master-piece of a musical, Cabaret. The production you will see today, brought to life by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall (one of the most gifted directorial teams in the business), first slinked onto the Roundabout stage in 1998. The show presented a dark and dazzling vision for the iconic musical, stripping away showbiz sheen and sparkle to reveal an unadorned, visceral core: in the jagged choreography and raw sensuality of this production, we find a story both stark in its judgment and mesmerizing in its empathy. The 1998 production ran on Broadway until 2004 and proved to be a landmark moment in Roundabout’s history. In 2013, when conversa-tions about a second revival began, I knew we had to take the opportunity to bring the musical to another generation of Broadway theatregoers. This is a production that deserves to be seen, whether for the first time or for a blissful encore.

Following that exceptional second run on Broadway, I am incredibly proud to be sharing this milestone production with a national audience. This season marks Roundabout’s 50th Anniversary as a company, and in this historic year, I cannot think of a better production with which to share our work and mission with you. Since Roundabout’s founding, the company’s mission has been growing with our audience. Today, our seasons include expert revivals of rarely-seen classic plays like Machinal and The Winslow Boy, joyous reimaginings of timeless American musicals like Anything Goes and She Loves Me, and new works by the playwrights penning the classics of the future. Roundabout is committed to bringing thrilling, high-quality productions to each of our New York stages and to stages throughout the country. As a not-for-profit theatre, we are also dedicated to making these enduring stories accessible to the largest possible audience, through extensive education and audience development programs.

Whether you have seen Roundabout’s work in New York or on the road (Cabaret marks our third national tour, following Twelve Angry Men and Anything Goes) or if you are joining us for the first time: thank you. Thank you for welcoming us to your theatre and for being a part of our 50th year. I hope you will visit us the next time you are in New York City, or online at RoundaboutTheatre.org. We are thrilled to continue growing our Roundabout family and to celebrate five decades of extraordinary productions and performances with you. Enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Todd Haimes, Artistic Director

Seattle Theatre Group and Starbucks are committed to young artists, that’s why we’ve partnered for more than a decade.

DANCE This alum

“DANCE This has been a goal of mine ever since I saw it many years ago. I knew I wanted to be part of it but I didn’t know it was something I could do. Now, not only have I performed in it but I’m a returning choreographer. This program has broadened my horizons and changed my life; it has opened doors for me and my community. Thank you Starbucks for your continued support and for maintaining a personal touch in our community.”

— Shakiah Danielson, performer and choreographer

STG + Starbucks, giving young artists a stage to shine for thirteen years and counting.

Thanks to support from Starbucks, STG provides young people in the greater Seattle area with access to innovative cross-cultural training and performance programs like More Music @ The Moore, DANCE This and STG’s Songwriters Lab. More than 400 young artists and 4,500 community members are impacted by this partnership every year. Shakiah Danielson is just one example.

On July 6 is a screening of Promised Land, a social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest: the Duwamish and the Chinook, as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they’ve long been denied. In following their story, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still looks at tribal sovereignty.

Your Dollars @ WorkMark your calendars for Nights at the Neptune!STG’s Nights at the Neptune is an annual series of FREE summer performances that showcases the work of local artists as it relates to some of the most pressing issues of our time. It is a platform designed to awaken our consciousness to inequity, while celebrating our shared cultures and forgotten histories — all through art.

These six shows bring our community together each Thursday night from July 6 through August 10, with this year also featuring a special kickoff event celebrating the 5th anniversary of Nights at the Neptune on June 30! With the financial support of donors and community partners, STG has had the pleasure of mounting presentations by some of the region’s most dynamic and powerful artists and organizations whose work reflects themes of race & social justice or celebrates a cultural art form.

This year, STG joins forces with Artist Trust for an Artist Trust-STG Nights at the Neptune Community Partnership to strengthen the mission of the Nights at the Neptune series. Two of this year’s events were created with support from Artist Trust’s GAP Award…

For more information on the Nights at the Neptune series, including a full schedule of performances, please visit stgpresents.org/neptune/nights.
