Rencontres d’échanges, d’inspirations et de réflexions autour du design et de l’architecture, les Master Classes Index-Design, présentées par CAB Déco, permettent autour d’une discussion publique de partager l’expérience d’un designer ou d’un architecte de renommée internationale.

Pour la rentrée 2014, Index-Design, en par-tenariat avec CAB Déco et Interface, accueille pour une classe de maître inédite au Québec un grand nom de l’architecture internationale contemporaine : Craig Dykers. Co-fondateur de l’agence Snøhetta, il en dirige le bureau new-yorkais. Il a orchestré une grande partie des plus beaux projets de l’agence, comme la Bibliothèque d’Alexandrie en Égypte ou l’Opéra National de Norvège à Oslo.

Craig Dykers est un habitué des lectures, qu’il donne régulièrement à travers le monde. Il y différencie l’abstraction du « concept » archi-tectural à la réalité de ceux à qui un projet est destiné : les êtres humains.

A monthly gathering to share, inspire and reflect on themes related to design and architecture, the Master Classes Index-Design presented by CAB Déco aim to share the knowledge of an internationally renowned designer or architect in an open discussion.

The 2014 season begins with an astoun-ding Master Class. This fall, Index-Design in partnership with CAB Déco and Interface, will host one of the biggest names in internatio-nal contemporary architecture: Craig Dykers. Co-founder of Snøhetta, he now operates from the New York offices. He led most of Snøhetta’s greatest projects such as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt and the Oslo Opera House in Norway.

Craig Dykers is a seasoned international lec-turer. He often insists on the gap between an architectural concept and the reality of those who will live it: us, human beings.

‘‘ People Pissed-Off Map ’’

According to Craig Dykers, the very notion of concept is built upon the precept that a question must lead to another, and then ano-ther, until it reaches the users and develops a pragmatic relation to them.

La notion de concept telle que vue par Craig Dykers prend la forme d’une question qui en amène une autre, puis une autre, jusqu’à me-ner aux utilisateurs pour appliquer un rapport pragmatique aux personnes.

Pour le projet de réaménagement de Time Square, l’équipe de Craig Dykers a -entre autre- réalisé une « People Pissed-Off Map » afin d’identifier les pires espaces de conges-tion et fluidifier le trafic piétonnier, « to eliminate the anger » dixit l’intéressé.

Espace = générosité = confort

De ses racines scandinaves, Craig Dykers garde un goût prononcé pour l’épuration et l’espace. Pour Craig Dykers, l’espace permet la vision et la capacité à se situer dans son environnement, élément indispensable à la sensation de confort. « As humans, we want to get perspective of our surroundings. »

La générosité de ses créations amène les lieux à vivre des choses inattendues. L’Opéra d’Oslo a vu aussi bien un motard trial s’amuser de ses infrastructures qu’un couple frivole baptiser son toit le soir du lancement, alors que la Reine de Norvège, le Roi et toute la classe politique étaient en-dessous pour une autre inauguration, plus « mondaine » celle-ci. « That was kind of a nice way to open a building, I thought. » Même si ce n’était pas le concept original…

From his Scandinavian roots, Craig Dykers retains a marked predilection for minimalism and space. Space enables us to project and situate ourselves in an environment, two imperatives to the feeling of comfort. ‘‘ As humans, we want to get perspective of our surroundings. ’’

The openness of his architecture makes it a hub for creative outlets. For example, the Oslo Opera House has once hosted a demonstration of trial motorcycling and then a baptism of its roof by an eccentric couple while the Queen of Norway, the king and politicians were enjoying a more swanky inauguration under. ‘‘ That was kind of a nice way to open a building, I thought. ’’ even though it wasn’t the original concept...

Quand nous l’avons reçue fin 2013, la VOLT a été un vrai coup de foudre. Légère, sophis-tiquée, moderne, elle avait déjà donné un sacré coup de fouet au monde du design et attiré l’œil des photographes de la première édition du Sydney Indesign.

Comme si tous les yeux devaient rester braqués sur elle, elle a reçu le 24 mars 2014 un Red Dot Award dans la catégorie Objet Design. Son apparence toute en simplicité n’a pas su masquer sa grande sophistication.

Ses lignes fines cachent une conception en polypropylène chargée de fibres de verre et moulée par injection avec le système gas air moulding. Elle nous offre une structure en une pièce, aussi solide que légère : seulement 9 livres pour la version sans bras (670), 11 livres pour la version à bras (675). En bonus, la Volt s’empile jusqu’à 13 pour la 670, et 10 pour la 675.

It was love at first sight when we got our VOLT last year. Lightweight, sophisticated and modern, it quickly became a favorite among designers and won acclaims during the first edition of Sydney Indesign.

Staying in the spotlight, it received on march 24th 2014 a Red Dot Award in the Product Design category. Attention to details embra-cing simplicity is the secret of its refinement.

Its thin and linear structure is produced through gas molded polypropylene rein-forced with fiberglass. The resulting single piece chair is strong and light. The armless Volt 670 weighs in at only 9 pounds and the 675 with arms at 11 pounds. It is also stac-kable up to 13 for the 670 and to 10 for the 675.

Plusieurs mois déjà depuis la découverte de ses courbes et de ses couleurs et la VOLT fait encore vibrer les passionnés de design. Après des apparitions remarquées à Sydney et Milan en 2013, elle débute 2014 avec un prix prestigieux et l’ajout à sa gamme d’un argument de taille.

Prendre de la hauteur

Cette année encore, Volt a fait partie des vedettes du Salon international du meuble de Milan où le public a eu la surprise et le plaisir de découvrir une version tabouret. Son design reprend tous les attraits de la chaise dans une version hauteur bar, disponible dans les mêmes couleurs que le reste de la famille.

Le tabouret est conçu de la même manière que les chaises : une structure d’une pièce en polypropylène renforcé de fibres de verre et moulé par injection. Les trois appui-pieds as-surent la stabilité et permettent au tabouret d’être lui-aussi empilable! Aussi à l’aise en extérieur que dans des restaurants au design contemporain, c’est en toute logique que la gamme accueille ce grand-frère. Un futur classique.

Up in the air.

This year again, the Volt was part of the reigning champs at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile of Milan, where lucky design lovers saw the launch of the new Volt barstool. It is available with the same features and in the same colors than the chair.

The stools are produced in the same way than the chairs: A one-piece gas molded reinforced polypropylene frame. Footrests on three sides will ensure perfect stability while still enabling the stools to stack.

It may be suitable for outdoor use, but it will also shine in trendy restaurants. The Volt barstool is a highly anticipated addition to the collection and an instant classic.

2014 voit le retour au premier plan du design d’inspiration scandinave. Les collections se mul-tiplient et fleurissent les blogues de designers. La nature reprend ses droits; le style industriel n’est plus l’unique incontournable.

Notre série Malmö est arrivée sans tambours ni trompettes début 2012, légèrement en amont de cette tendance. Elle incarne et respecte totalement le corpus des valeurs du design scandinave : fonctionnalité, fiabilité, audace.

Ses lignes épurées s’articulent autour d’une structure en frêne tourné, un bois clair qui témoigne d’une relation forte à la nature. Ses formes telluriques érodent en douceur l’abstraction typique de ses inspirations modernistes.

En deux ans d’existence, notre gamme Malmö a pris le temps de s’étoffer. Elle se promène avec élégance du salon à la salle à manger, du lobby au bureau, et y imprègne sa quiétude, comme une bouffée d’air frais au bord de l’eau.

Scandinavian design makes a notable come-back in 2014. Collections multiply and designer blogs stock up. Nature inspired design is back in the game; industrial is not the only leading trend anymore.

Our Malmö series shipped in without great fanfare in the beginning of 2012, just before the trend took off. It embodies scandinavian integrity at its fullest: functionality, reliability and boldness.

The Malmö’s sleek lines are made of turned ashwood, a light-shaded wood that reminds us of its strong ties to nature. Its organic shapes mirror the abstraction found in mo-dern design.

Throughout its two years of existence, our Malmö series grew a lot. It will fit seamlessly in the living room as much as in the dining room, from the lobby to the office. It will infuse any room with its peacefulness, as a crisp breath of air on the shores of a quiet lake.

capitale danoise, Malmö est réputée pour sa diversité architecturale remarquable en harmonie avec son environnement naturel.

Après une période de crise industrielle dans les années 90, la ville a accueilli la European Exhibition en 2001. Les meil-leurs architectes du Vieux Continent se sont alors démenés pour faire de Malmö une ville écologique exemplaire et inno-vante.

Aux pieds des bâtiments en bois, en alu-minium ou en verre, d’immenses espaces verts se jettent dans la Mer Baltique. On les contemple en traversant l’Øresund, le dé-troit de huit kilomètres qui sépare Malmö de Copenhague, reliées grâce à l’immense pont-tunnel qui a permis aux habitants de Malmö de sortir de la crise en allant travail-ler chez leurs dynamiques voisins.

Audacieuse, en phase avec son environ-nement, moderne, Malmö est devenue un symbole.

After a time of industrial crisis in the 90’s, the city hosted the European Exhibition in 2001. The wisdom of the greatest architects of the Old Continent were then put together to make of Malmö a sustainable city that would set the pace for innovation.

Green spaces span from the foot of the wood, aluminum and glass laden new building to the Baltic Sea. We can see them from the Øresund, the 8km strait that runs between Malmö and Copen-hagen and houses the great bridge that enabled the dwellers of Malmö to grow out of the crisis by working in Copen-hagen.

Bold, in harmony with its surroundings and modern, Malmö has become a symbol.

Nouveauté 2014, le fauteuil Havana définit un nouveau standard. Ses courbes spatiales n’ont d’égal que son insaisissable confort. L’ensemble lui a valu le Interior Innovation Award 2014.

Part of our 2014 collection, the Havana sets new standards. Its spacey curves are only matched by its otherworldly comfort. It’s no surprise that it won the Interior Innovation Award 2014.

À peine entré en production, le Havana a débarqué dans nos locaux comme un OVNI. Dans une couleur nocturne, son profil évoquant un appareil de la NASA a donné à notre salle de montre un petit côté “CAB” Canaveral inatten-du.

Avec son gabarit impressionnant, le Havana se dresse comme un monolithe. Pourtant, rien d’imposant ne s’en dégage, si ce n’est une invitation amicale à profiter de sa disponibi-lité. Sa légèreté surprenante –qui lui permet d’être malgré tout très manipulable- ne doit pas y être complètement étrangère.

À l’intérieur, ses courbes invitent à une attitude sereine, contemplative. Son confort presque absurde fait quant à lui perdre la notion du temps. Il provoque un effet de détente immédiate et donne l’impression de piloter une navette sans effort. Généreux, il accueille avec autant de réussite les plus grands gabarits.

Douceur, chaleur

Dans une couleur chaude, on imagine aisé-ment comment le Havana peut faire sentir un soleil insulaire à son occupant, peu importe où et quand. Nul besoin de cigare pour se sentir à Cuba! Le Havana se suffit à lui-même pour des ambiances confortables et muy caliente.

Le large choix de revêtement est pensé

Soon after it went into production, the Havana crash landed in our showroom as an ethereal UFO. Sporting a dark shade of night blue and shaped as a NASA spacecraft, it lent our showroom an unsuspected “CAB” Canaveral aura.

With its impressive proportions, the Havana stands out as a monolith although the only imposing thing that exults from it is a friendly invitation to nestle in it. It is surprisingly lightweight, which makes it easy to shift around.

When all cuddled up in it, it’s easy to lose track of time and to wander off in thoughts. The Havana instigates a serene and contem-plative attitude. It unwinds the most stressed of us and gives us the feeling of effortlessly steering the helm of a shuttle. Its wide build accommodates all sizes.

Softness, warmth

In a warmer hue, it’s easy to see how the Havana can bring the sweltering Cuban sun anywhere, anytime. No need of a cigar to feel like you’re hanging out with Hemingway. The Havana creates cozy and muy caliente ambiances.

The vast selection of upholstery fabric was chosen for its voluptuous feel and texture. Radiant hues and deep tones will make you feel right at home.

Et comme un bonheur n’arrive jamais seul, une toute nouvelle finition a suivi de près l’arrivée du Havana : un plaquage de cuivre sur le pied. Il apporte une touche industrielle et donne un potentiel design supplémentaire, alternative moderne aux finitions peintes très réussies quoique plus traditionnelles.

And as if it wasn’t enough, a new copper finish is available to customize the feet of the Havana, giving it a touch of modern industria-lism. It’s a welcome alternative to the more traditional painted steel legs.
