CoEXist in brief
• Objective: – The mission of the H2020 CoEXist project is to systematically increase
the capacity of local authorities and other urban mobility stakeholders to
get ready for the transition towards a shared road network with
increasing levels of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs)
• Automation-Ready: – Micro- and Macroscopic Transport Modelling
– Hybrid Road Infrastructure
– Local Authorities
This project has received funding from the European
Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723201-2

• Programme: EU H2020-ART05
• Duration: May 2017 – April 2020
• Total Budget: 3,474,065 €
• Strategic Aim: – To bridge the gap between automated vehicles
(AVs) technology and transportation and infrastructure planning by strengthening the capacities of urban road authorities and cities to plan for the integration of AVs on the same network.
• Partners: – 16 partners from 7 European

Aim of Focus Group Meeting • Current focus of the debate is on vehicles and technology.
Let’s have an holistic discussion about sustainable urban transport policy rather than industrial policy.
– Polis Paper
• Road vehicle automation and cities
– DIFU workshop
• Impact of automated driving on cities
– Danish Cycling Embassy
• Cyclists and self-driving vehicles – challenges and potentials
– ICLEI article
• Why cities should engage with autonomous driving
– CIVITAS?

Vision for Automation-ready
• Written 15 years ago
• Definition of sustainable mode
• Sharing / MaaS
• Disruptive technology
• Role of cities
• Engagement with citizens and industry about technology

Definition for “Automation-Ready
• This is the current definition for ‘automation-ready’:
“Automation-ready is defined as conducting transport and infrastructure planning for automated vehicles in the same comprehensive manner as for existing modes such as conventional vehicles, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists, while ensuring continued support for existing modes.”
• We might need different definitions for different modes
• Different definitions for different time frames
• Today, cities don’t have to be “automation-ready”, but “automation-aware”

Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723201-2

‘Automation-ready’ measures
• What you can do in your current role/job and what measures can be taken in your city in order to become ‘automation-ready’?
• Short term: within the next 5 years – Stay Educated on Driverless Vehicle Progress “Automation-Aware”
– Establish Communications and/or Coalition with Driverless Vehicle Stakeholders
– Support Testing Activities, íncl. legal and regulatory activities
– ‘Less concrete more bytes’ approach
• Medium term: 5 -10 years: – Update travel demand model & Evaluate Road Capacity Needs
– Incorporate Driverless Vehicles into City Goals
– Assess PT delivery plans and fleet requirements
• Long term: 10 – 20 years: – Infrastructure Modifications (e.g. lane markings, change of speed limits)
– Procure AVs for local authority fleets

Background CIVITAS SATELLITE and
CIVITAS Learning Centre
• The CIVITAS SATELLITE project provides cross-project
coordination, exchange mechanisms, and capacity building
• Cities access the latest innovations resulting from European
urban mobility research, as well as helping city practitioners
to gain the necessary skills to apply innovations in their local
contexts.
• To strengthen the capacity building aspect of CIVITAS 2020,
CIVITAS SATELLITE has established the CIVITAS Learning
Centre as the European e-learning resources library on
sustainable urban mobility.
• In the coming two years, a series of e-learning courses on
different topics
This project has received funding from the European
Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723201-2
www.h2020-coexist.eu
• Webinars conducted at the beginning of each course
• Course 1(early 2018)
– Topics: • Connected and automated driving in cities
• CAV technology and its abilities
• Impacts of transport automation in cities (e.g. transport planning, urban planning, and governance implications)
• Transport automation in use (e.g. shuttle services; shared and on-demand; platooning; freight; municipal services)
• Impediments to automation (e.g. safety, legal issues, cyber security, etc.)
• Course 2 (mid 2018)
– Topics: • Transport planning (e.g. strategic planning and policy framework)
• Model-based analysis (e.g. modelling and simulation, data-based and statistical analysis)
• Impact assessments (e.g. evaluations, assessment frameworks)

Features of Mobility Academy Platform
• Weekly modules according to the subtopics
• Interactive features for participant engagement
– Participants get tasks based on the module of the week
– Discussion forum for task results are moderated and participants can
exchange ideas; cities are especially encouraged to discuss their
contextual problems and also solutions
– Poll surveys and feedback from participants and experts
