Roots Vacuum Pumps

ApplicationsFor many years now Roots vacuumpumps have been well established inthe area of vacuum technology. In combination with backing pumps, which compress against theatmosphere, these pumps offer thefollowing advantages:

Shifting the Operating

Pressure into the High

Vacuum RangeAs a rule of the thumb one may saythat Roots vacuum pumps are capable of improving the attainable ultimate pressure of a pump systemby a factor of 10. With two Rootsvacuum pump stages and a corresponding backing pump it ispossible to attain pressures in therange down to 10-5 mbar (0.75 x 10-5 Torr). Under certain circumstances this will make the useof additional high vacuum pumps(turbomolecular pumps or diffusionpumps) unnecessary.

Multiplied Pumping SpeedDue to the non-contact rotation of theimpellers, Roots vacuum pumps areable to run at higher speeds. Thus ahigh pumping speed is obtained witha relatively small size pump. Pumpingspeeds in excess of 1000 m3/h (589 cfm) can only be attained withRoots vacuum pumps.

When selecting the right kind ofbacking pump (sizing) it will be possible to pump large quantities ofgas in connection with smallerbacking pumps. Energy consumptionof such a pump system is much lesscompared to a single backing pumpoffering the same pumping speed.

General Roots Vacuum Pumps

The use of Roots vacuum pumps inthe area of vacuum technology hasresulted in further specializations andimprovements:

Through an integrated bypass(pressure equalization line) it isalso possible to utilize thepumping speed of the Rootsvacuum pump at high pressuresand large quantities of gas at anearly stage. This reduces thepumpdown time especially forcyclic operation (see figure“Comparison of pumping speedcharacteristics with and withoutpressure equalization line”).

High-purity gases or hazardousgases impose strict requirementson the leak-tightness of thesystem. Canned motors arehermetically sealed. There are no

seals in contact with theatmosphere which might besubject to wear. This preventsleaks and failures due to oil leaks.A service life of over 20000 hourswithout maintenance is quitecommon.

Tolerances and the quality of thebalancing combined with forcefedlubricated bearings and toothedgears permit high speeds and theuse of frequency converters. Thusit is possible to attain a highpumping speed while the processis in progress and to reduce thespeed when the process has beenstopped or while changing thebatch. This results in a lowerconsumption of energy and alonger service life withuncompromised reliability.

Conversion from vertical tohorizontal flow is easilyimplemented and can beperformed at the place where thepump has been installed. Thus thepump can be adapted moreclosely to the operating conditionsof your system.

Lately, a further characteristic isgaining prominence: Roots vacuumpumps are capable of compressingthe media in the pump chamberwithout the presence of any furthermedia. This mostly avoids interactionbetween different media in the pumpitself and also in the connectedvacuum chamber. Therefore

 the medium which is pumped isnot contaminated with lubricantsor sealants; complex accessories(exhaust filters, separators, etc.)are not needed;

 the lubricant in the side chambersis hardly affected, so that servicelife is not reduced;

backstreaming of oil from thebacking pump into the connectedvacuum chamber is prevented.

The effective air cooling arrangementreduces operating costs to aminimum. Cooling water is notrequired.

These characteristics make the Rootsvacuum pump attractive for almost allrough and medium vacuumapplications.

Roots Vacuum Pumps

Semiconductor

TechnologyIn the area of semiconductortechnology, Roots vacuum pumps arefound in etching processes amongothers, and in use with drycompressing vacuum pumps.

The pumping speed of the combina-tion of backing pumps amounts to200 to 500 m3/h (118 to 295 cfm) and it ensures a cut-in pressure of10-1 mbar (0.75 x 10-1 Torr) for theturbomolecular pump. In the case ofdry compression, corrosive gaseswhich also have a high particulatecontent must be pumped.

Canned motors and PFPE fluidsprovide a good seal against theoutside and allow long periodsbetween servicing, high reliability andthus very low operating costs (WS PFPE types).

Specific suitable for this processesand use in clean rooms are Rootsvacuum pumps filled with PFPE andwater-cooled motors. These kind of motor has only a littleheat dissipatoion.

Central Vacuum Supply

SystemsLarge Roots vacuum pumps, usuallyin connection with single-stage rotaryvane vacuum pumps serve severalconsumers of vacuum (packagingmachines, for example) at the sametime.

Due to the uncontrolled influx of gas,a high of pumping speed must beattained quickly, in order to keep thevacuum (1 to 30 mbar (0.75 to 22.5 Torr)) permanently available toall consumers. This in particular, isimplemented by Roots vacuumpumps having a pressureequalization line (WAU types).

ChemistryReplacement of vapor jet or gas jetpumps on liquid ring pumps in dryingand distillation plants is necessary forattaining the required operatingpressure of about 1 mbar (0.75 Torr).Reduction of operating costs byentirely eliminating vapor or gasquantities includes separation ofthese on the pressure side (WA andRA types).

Laser SystemsContinuous circulation of the gas inorder to remove heat from a closedcycle in which pressure differentialsof up to 100 mbar (75 Torr) must bemaintained. The tough requirementsregarding purity necessitate a totalabsence of contamination by oil anddust. This is ensured by reducing thepressure level in the oil chambers aswell as by coating the pumpchamber. The pumps are assembledand tested under clean roomconditions.

The canned motor ensures a highdegree of leak-tightness to theoutside and permits operation inconnection with a frequencyconverter (WSLF types).

Pump system consisting of RUVAC WAU 1001and SOGEVAC SV 200

Operating PrincipleRoots vacuum pumps, which are alsocalled Roots blowers, are rotaryplunger type pumps where twosymmetrically shaped impellorsrotate in opposite directions insidethe pump housing.

The figure-of-eight rotors aresynchronized by a gear whichensures that the impellors arecounter-rotating in such a way, thatthey are near to one another and tothe housing without actualcontacting.

In rotor positions I and II (see figure“Operational diagram of a single-stage Roots vacuum pump (withvertical pumping action)”) the volumeof the intake is increased. As therotors turn further to position III a partof the volume is cut off from theintake side.

In position IV this volume is openedto the exhaust side and gas underfore-vacuum pressure (higher thanthe intake pressure) flows in. This gascompresses the gas coming from theintake. As the rotors turn further thecompressed gas is ejected throughthe exhaust flange.

This process repeats itself twice foreach rotor per full turn.

As the rotors do not come intocontact with the pump’s housingRoots vacuum pumps may beoperated at high speeds. Thus a highpumping speed is obtained fromcomparably small pumps.

The pressure difference and thecompression ratio between intakeand exhaust is limited in Rootsvacuum pumps.

In practice the maximum attainablepressure difference is of significanceonly in the rough vacuum range (p > 10 mbar (p > 7.5 Torr)) where-asin the medium vacuum range (p < 1 mbar (p < 0.75 Torr)) theattainable compression ratio is ofimportance.

Roots vacuum pumps from Leyboldhave been designed to speciallymeet the requirements of the finevacuum range. They are normallyused in connection with backingpumps (exception RAV) or in closedgas cycles (WSLF series).

DesignThe pump chamber of Roots vacuumpumps is free of any sealing agentsor lubricants. Only the toothedwheels of the synchronous gear arelubricated with oil. Toothed gearwheels and bearings of the RUVACare placed in two side chamberswhich also contain the oil reservoir. These two side chambers areseparated from the pump chamberby piston ring seals.

Suitably designed oil supply systemsin both chambers ensure that asufficient quantity of oil is supplied tothe gear wheels and bearings at allpermissible speeds.

Almost all RUVAC Roots vacuumpumps are designed for a horizontaland vertical pumping action.

Roots Vacuum Pumps

TypesVarious types of Roots vacuumpumps have been developed toensure optimum adaptation to thewidely varying applications for thistype of pump.

Flange mounted motorThe drive shaft of the pump isdirectly connected to an electricmotor via a flexible coupling. Therequired seal of the drive shaftagainst atmospheric pressure isobtained by oiled shaft seals.

Canned motorIn the canned motor, rotor andstator pack are separated by avacuum-tight can made of a non-magnetic material. The rotoroperates on the drive shaft of thepump in the vacuum, so that ashaft seal which would be subjectto wear is not required.

Pressure equalization lineThe integrated pressureequalization line connects theexhaust flange to the intake flangethrough a differential pressurevalve. This valve opens at a highpressure differential between theflanges. Part of the gas then flowsthrough this line back to the intakeflange. This is why the Rootsvacuum pump may be switchedon at atmospheric pressuretogether with the backing pump. This also increases the pumpingspeed of the pump combination athigh intake pressures.

Special ACE vibration absorberThese pumps are best used inapplications involving frequentpumpdown cycles. The vibrationabsorber is of an oil sealed orfilled design where minuteamounts of oil may enter thevacuum system via the piston ofthe vibration attenuator.

RUVAC WA/WAU, WS/WSUThe series WA/WAU Roots vacuumpumps are provided with directlyflange-mounted air-cooled standardthree-phase motors. The oiled radialsealing rings of the RUVAC WA/WAUfor sealing the shaft against theatmosphere are made of FPM (fluorcaoutchouc).

The WS/WSU series pumps aredriven by air or water-cooled cannedmotors.

Roots vacuum pumps of the seriesWAU/WSU are provided with anadditional integrated pressureequalization line and a differentialpressure valve.

Pumps from these series aresupplied with a vertical pumpingaction as standard.

RUVAC WS with FCThis type of pump is equipped withan integrated frequency converterfitted directly to the canned motor. The frequency converter has beenspecially matched to the pump.

The main characteristics of theRUVAC WS are:Simulation of a pressureequalisation lineThe frequency converter has beenmatched to the pump so that thepossibility of mechanically over-loading it is excluded. In the case ofa pressure difference which is toohigh, the rotational speed of thepump is automatically reduced untilits load drops in to the permissiblerange.

This WS type with integratedfrequency converter can be switchedon together with the backing pump atatmospheric pressure. In this waysignificantly shorter pumpdown timesare attained. When using this modeof operation, the minimum pumpingspeed rating of the backing pumpneeds to be observed.

Operation at any rotational speedsThe frequency converter is equippedwith a 0 to 10 V signal input and isthus in a position to control therotational speed of the pump.

Increasing the pumping speedThe pump is prepared to handle a maximum rotational speed of 6000 rpm so that the frequencyconverter permits an increase in thenominal pumping speed of up to 100 %.

NotePlease enquire about possiblyexisting usage limits (processdependent).

RUVAC WSLFThe pumps of these series areespecially adapted Roots vacuumpumps from the RUVAC WS serieswhich are intended for operation withgas lasers.

They are driven by a canned motorso that a shaft seal for sealingagainst atmospheric pressure is notrequired.

Air-cooled series with nominalpumping speeds of 1000 m3 x h-1

(589 cfm) are available.

The RUVAC WSLF series withincreased motor ratings is intendedfor operation in connection withfrequency converters.

These pumps are available withnickel-plated or plasma-nitratedsurface as standard.

All pumps of these series aresupplied with a horizontal pumpingaction.

Vertical pumping action is availableupon request.

RUVAC RARA series Roots vacuum pumps areequipped with a directly flange-mounted three-phase motor (RA 13000 via V-belt drive).

Frequency Inverter

RUVATRONIC RT 5The electronic frequency invertersRUVATRONIC RT 5/251 to 5/16000have been designed specially for usein connection with Leybold Rootspumps of the RUVAC type.

For each Roots vacuum pump size, amatching frequency inverter isavailable.

The main characteristics of theRUVATRONIC RT 5 are:Simulation of a pressureequalisation lineThe software of the frequencyinverters is adapted to each pumpand ensures that the risk ofmechanically overloading the pumpcan be excluded. In the case of toohigh pressure differences, therotational speed will be decreasedautomatically until the load isreduced to within the pump’slimits.RUVAC Roots vacuum pumpsof the types WA, WS and RA (withoutpressure equalisation line) can beswitched on together with the fore-pump at atmospheric pressure.Through this, the pumpdown timecan be reduced drastically. Theminimum pumping speed of thebacking pump needs to beconsidered in this case.

Operation at up to 3 predefinedspeedsVia floating contacts, the pump canbe operated at one of the 3 pre-defined speeds. Switching over toanother predefined speed is possibleduring operation.

Operation at any rotational speedWith a 0 to 10 V signal, any speedcan be predefined to operate thepump between the minimum andmaximum rotational speed. Thesoftware reliably ensures that therotational speed cannot drop belowthe minimum speed or exceed themaximum speed.

Increase in the pumping speedBy operating the Roots vacuumpumps at frequencies over 50 Hz, the nominal pumping speed of thepumps can be increased. Dependingon the type of pump, an increasebetween 20 and 100 % is possible.

NotePlease enquire about possibleapplication limitations (processdependent).

RUVAC WS/WSU Roots Vacuum Pumps with Air-Cooled Canned Motors

Advantages to the User Two series, each with four models

 Highly leak-tight air-cooled pumpsdriven by a air-cooled cannedmotor

Lubricated with mineral oil. RUVAC WS/WSU PFPE withperfluoropolyether (PFPE)

WS and WS PFPE pumps areidentical except for the lubricantand the shipping package

No thermal problems due to thespeed independent coolingarrangement using a separatelyconnected fan, thus no thermalproblems at low speeds

Over-temperature switch in thestator coil of the motor

 All elastomer seals made ofFPM/Viton

Integrated pressure equalizationline with differential pressure valveprevents overloading on WSUmodel

RUVAC WS 251 to 2001 for usewith a frequency inverter for awide frequency range

No shaft feedthrough to the atmosphere, thus particularly leaktight

Pumping direction may bechanged as required

Typical Applications For applications which require a

high pumping speed at pressuresbetween 10-2 and 10-4 mbar (0.75 x 10-2 and 0.75 x 10-4 Torr)

Used where the possibility ofcontamination due air ingress orpumped media leakage must beavoided

Suction or pumping of high-purityor radioactive gases

Is used in clean rooms were theair must not be recirculated by themotor‘s fan

Supplied Equipment The required oil or PFPE filling is

included in separate bottle

 Purged with nitrogen for corrosionprotection

Gasket in the intake flange withintegrated dirt sieve

Roots Vacuum Pumps

RUVAC WS/WSU(W) PFPE Roots Vacuum Pumpswith Water-Cooled Canned Motors

Advantages to the User Two series, each with four models

 Highly leak-tight air-cooled pumpsdriven by a water-cooled cannedmotor

 RUVAC WS/WSU(W) PFPElubricated with perfluoropolyether(PFPE)

WS and WS PFPE pumps areidentical except for the lubricantand the shipping package

No thermal problems due to thespeed independent coolingarrangement using a separatelyconnected fan, thus no thermalproblems at low speeds

Over-temperature switch in thestator coil of the motor

 All elastomer seals made ofFPM/Viton

Integrated pressure equalizationline with differential pressure valveprevents overloading on WSUmodel

RUVAC WS 251 to 2001 for usewith a frequency inverter for awide frequency range

No shaft feedthrough to theatmosphere, thus particularlyleaktight

Pumping direction may bechanged as required

Typical Applications For applications which require a

high pumping speed at pressuresbetween 10-2 and 10-4 mbar (0.75 x 10-2 and 0.75 x 10-4 Torr)

Used where the possibility ofcontamination due air ingress orpumped media leakage must beavoided

Suction or pumping of high-purityor radioactive gases

Is used in clean rooms were theair must not be recirculated by themotor‘s fan

Supplied Equipment The required oil or PFPE filling is

included in separate bottle(exceptions are marked)

 Purged with nitrogen for corrosionprotection

Gasket in the intake flange withintegrated dirt sieve

Vacuum Pump Oils

Lubricating oils for rotary vacuumpumps need to fulfil demandingrequirements. Their vapor pressuremust be low also at high temperatures, water content andwater uptake must be minimal. Theirviscosity characteristics needs to beflat, lubricating properties need to beexcellent and they must resistcracking upon being mechanicallystressed.

All the vacuum pump oils listed in thefollowing have been subjected in ourfactory laboratories to very comprehensive tests closely resembling the conditions encountered in practice by thepumps from the RUVAC series.

We therefore recommend the exclusive use of vacuum pump oilsfully qualified by Leybold so as toensure optimum performance of the Leybold vacuum pumps and also toensure optimum oil change intervals.

Under vacuum conditions lubricatingoils, especially those with additivesmay behave quite differently thanexpected. Additives may adverselyaffect the attainable ultimate pressureand may react with the media beingpumped.

When using not suitably qualifiedthird party oils, the oil change intervals and the performance of thevacuum pump may be reduced. Alsounwanted deposits may occur whichmay even cause severe damage tothe vacuum pump.

For these reasons please understandthat we must make our warranty commitment dependent on the use ofoils which have been qualified by us.Damages caused by the use of notsuitably qualified lubricating oils arenot covered by our warranty.

In order to adapt the pumps to thedifferent applications of our customers, different types of oil areused in the RUVAC pumps.

Please note that owing to differingproperties not all types of oil may beused in all pumps of the RUVACseries. If you can not find the combination of pump and oil yourequire please ask us for a quotation.

Lubricant Types

Mineral OilsMineral oils are products distilled andrefined from crude oil. These do notconsist of precisely defined compounds but rather consist of acomplex mixture. The way in whichthe mineral oil is pre-treated and itscomposition are decisive as to theapplications it will be suited for.Depending on the distribution of thehydrocarbons and the dominance ofcertain properties, mineral oils aregrouped according to paraffin-base,naphthenic and aromatic. For thepurpose of attaining especially lowultimate pressures, mineral oils mustbe selected on the basis of a corefraction.

The thermal and chemical resistanceof mineral oils has been found to beadequate in the majority of applications. They offer a highdegree of compatibility with elastomers and resistance to hydrolysis.

Leybold Vacuum Full Line Catalog 200536

Synthetic OilsSynthetic oils are produced by achemical reaction. The group ofsynthetic oils includes liquidsdiffering widely as to their chemicalstructure and composition.Correspondingly their physical andchemical properties differconsiderably. Synthetic oils are usedin those cases where specialproperties of the oil are requiredwhich can not be fulfilled by mineraloils.

The oils given in the following belongto the group of synthetic oils:

Ester OilsEster oils are organic compoundswhich excel especially through theirhigh thermal resistance to crackingcompared to mineral oils. Chemicalresistance is generally quite good, but will depend on the type of esteroil. Elastomer compatibility andresistance against hydrolysis are notso good compared to mineral oils.

Perfluorinated polyether

(PFPE)These are oils which are onlycomposed of carbon (C), fluorine (F)and oxygen atoms (O). The existingC-O and C-F bonds are highly stable. For this reason PFPE oils arepractically inert against all chemicaland oxidising influences.

Perfluorinated polyether will notpolymerise under the influence ofhigh energy radiation.

PFPE is non-flammable. LeyboldNC1/14 has the approval of BAM(Federal Institute for MaterialsResearch and Testing) for pumpingof pure oxygen.

Perfluorinated polyether are usedwhen pumping strongly reactivesubstances like oxygen (O2), fluorine(F2) and uranium hexafluoride (UF6).Regarding Lewis acids (for example, boron trifluoride (BF3), aluminumtrichloride (AlCl3)) they are notcompletely inert. Here reactions maytake place at temperatures over 100 °C (212 °F).

Perfluorinated polyether are thermallyhighly stable. Thermal decompositionmay only take place at temperaturesof over 290 °C (554 °F).

Caution: Perfluorinated polyether will– when decomposed – release toxicand corrosive gases: hydrogenfluoride HF, carbonyl difluoride(COF2). For this reason open firesmust be avoided in the workspacewhere PFPE is being used. Do notsmoke in the workspace where PFPEis being used.

Only suitably prepared pumps mustbe used in connection withperfluorinated polyether, since it isessential that the pumps be free ofhydrocarbons.

Changing from one basic type of oilto PFPE must be left exclusively toauthorised Service Centers. Thepump will have to be fully dis-assembled and carefully cleaned.Gaskets and filters will have to beexchanged and suitable greases willhave to be used.

Safety data sheets are available to professional users from:e-mail " [email protected] or Internet www.leybold.com/safety-data".
